Chapter 3 - The Alliance of the Dispossessed and the Midnight RaidBy midnight, the rain had turned to sleet, coating the Chicago streets in a thin, treacherous sheet of ice.

Alina sat in the back of an unmarked black SUV parked two blocks away from the Viscari family compound in Lincoln Park—a massive, limestone fortress surrounded by twelve-foot iron gates and patrolled by armed guards.
In the passenger seat, Dana Reyes clicked through a ruggedized laptop displaying architectural schematics and fiber-optic security feeds.
"We're blind on the eastern perimeter," Dana said without looking up. "Roman’s security detail jammed their primary server relay ten minutes ago, but the backup generators will kick in within forty seconds. That's our window."
The rear door of the SUV swung open, and Roman slid into the leather bench beside Alina. He wore tactical black fatigues, a combat knife strapped to his thigh, and an assault rifle slung across his chest. He didn't look like a CEO or a husband; he looked like the apex predator of the Chicago underworld.
He didn't look at Alina. He looked straight ahead at the lit-up limestone walls of his family home.
"My father keeps the original master ledger—the physical title deeds, the wet-ink signatures, and the offshore banking keys—in a walk-in vault behind his private study," Roman said, his voice clipped and cold. "The biometric scanner requires his thumbprint, or a mechanical override located in the basement generator room."
Alina turned her head to look at him. "And you're willing to burn down your own father's legacy?"
Roman finally met her gaze. The dark circles under his eyes seemed carved from pure exhaustion and bitter resolve. "My legacy isn't brick and mortar, Alina. It's the woman sitting beside me. If I have to raze every building my family ever owned to keep you and our daughter safe, I'll strike the match myself."
"Save the dramatic speeches for a jury, Roman," Alina replied, though the sharpest edge of her anger had softened just a fraction. "Just get me to the vault."
Three minutes later, the assault began.
It wasn't a subtle break-in. Roman’s loyal enforcers, led by Pierce Rowan, hit the eastern gate with a breaching charge that blew the heavy iron hinges into the frozen shrubbery. Alarms shrieked through the compound, red emergency strobes flashing against the falling sleet.
While the Viscari guards rushed toward the perimeter breach, Roman, Alina, and a small strike team slipped through the rear conservatory doors.
The glass roof above them was slick with ice. They moved in absolute silence through the darkened mansion, past priceless oil paintings and antique statuary, descending the spiral staircase toward the subterranean sub-level where the old man kept his darkest secrets.
When they reached the heavy steel vault door at the end of the corridor, two guards stood waiting with rifles raised.
Roman didn't hesitate. He raised his sidearm and put two rounds through the chest of the lead guard before the man could flick off his safety. Pierce tackled the second guard, neutralizing him with a swift, brutal strike to the throat.
"The override," Roman panted, punching the keypad beside the steel door. "Dana, plug in."
Dana dropped to her knees, snapping a data cable from her laptop into the vault’s emergency terminal. Her fingers flew across the keyboard in a blur of green code.
Access denied. Security lock engaged.
"Give me three seconds," Dana muttered, sweat beading on her forehead despite the freezing subterranean air. "Your father used an old-school analog relay for the physical backup."
Behind them, heavy boots echoed down the stone corridor.
"Boss! We've got reinforcements coming down the main stairwell!" Pierce shouted, laying down suppressive fire around the corner with his rifle. "We're running out of time!"
Alina stepped forward. She reached into her handbag, pulled out the original legal trust document her grandmother had left her, and pressed the heavy paper flat against the cold steel surface of the vault door.
"Your father thought he could steal my inheritance with a pen," Alina said quietly, her hazel eyes blazing with cold fire. "Let's see how he likes having it legally dissolved right in front of him."
Dana hit the enter key with her palm.

CLANG.
The massive hydraulic locks disengaged with a deep, shuddering groan, and the heavy steel door swung inward, revealing rows of safety deposit boxes, stacks of bearer bonds, and the original hand-signed title deeds to the Moretti properties.
