Chapter 4 - The Gala, the Trap, and the Reckoning

The grand ballroom of the Ashworth Grand Hotel was a vision of glittering excess. Crystal chandeliers hung like frozen waterfalls from the vaulted ceilings, casting prismatic beams across the silk gowns of high-society elites, politicians, and wealthy investors. The air was thick with the scent of expensive champagne, imported caviar, and the delicate notes of a live string quartet playing near the grand staircase.

Yet, beneath the glittering veneer of the charity gala, the atmosphere was charged with an invisible, lethal current.

Dela stood on the mezzanine balcony overlooking the grand ballroom, wearing a midnight-blue velvet gown that Royce had secretly had custom-delivered to her penthouse suite hours earlier. It hugged her five-month baby bump gently, making her look less like a struggling waitress and more like royalty. A team of four elite Callaway enforcers stood quietly in the shadows behind her, invisible to the gala guests, their hands resting inside their tailored jackets near their concealed firearms.

Royce had insisted she attend. Not because he wanted her hidden away, but because he wanted to draw the vipers out into the open once and for all.

“Nervous?”

Royce’s voice brushed against her ear. He appeared beside her, slipping an arm securely around her waist, his body a solid, warm wall of protection against the cold marble balustrade. He wore a bespoke tuxedo, the dark ink of his neck tattoo peeking just above his pristine white collar.

Dela looked up at him, her heart skipping a beat. “What if Julian Vance’s men actually come? There are hundreds of innocent people down there, Royce.”

“Let them come,” Royce murmured, his dark eyes scanning the crowded ballroom below with chilling precision. “Every exit is sealed. My men control the perimeter, the roof, and the service tunnels. Julian thinks he’s walking into a trap to crush me. He doesn't realize he’s walking into his own grave.”

Down in the center of the ballroom, Julian Vance stood near the fountain, red-faced and sweating despite the air conditioning. He was surrounded by four burly enforcers disguised as catering staff, their heavy hands twitching near the butcher knives concealed beneath their white linen aprons. Julian’s daughter, Cordelia, stood beside her, her face bruised with humiliation, whispering venomous instructions into his ear while pointing directly up toward the mezzanine balcony where Dela stood.

Julian’s eyes narrowed into malicious slits. He raised a champagne flute, smiled a fake, greasy smile at the city mayor standing nearby, and then slowly began to edge his group toward the private service stairs leading up to the mezzanine.

“They’re moving,” Leo’s voice whispered through the comms piece hidden inside Royce’s ear. “Four hostiles on the service stairs, armed with silenced 9mm pistols and blades. They think they can slip past security via the kitchen corridor.”

Royce’s lips curved into a dangerous, razor-thin smile.

“Let them through the first set of doors, Leo,” Royce replied quietly into his collar mic. “Then drop the iron shutters.”

Dela watched in breathless suspense as Julian Vance and his four fake caterers pushed open the heavy brass service door leading directly onto the second-floor mezzanine. The ambient music from the string quartet below muffled the sudden, terrifying sound of heavy iron security shutters slamming down over every window and doorway on the floor, trapping the vipers in an inescapable cage of reinforced steel.

Julian froze. He whipped his head around, realizing too late that the party music below had cut out completely, replaced by a suffocating, absolute silence.

“What is this?!” Julian roared, slamming his fist against the locked steel shutter. “Callaway! Show yourself, you coward!”

The elevator doors at the end of the mezzanine chimed softly.

The doors slid open.

Royce did not run. He walked forward with measured, unhurried steps, his arm still protectively around Dela’s waist as he guided her down the short corridor toward Julian Vance. Behind them, twenty of the Callaway syndicate’s top enforcers stepped out of the elevators like phantoms rising from the dark, their suits immaculate, their eyes dead and cold.

Julian turned around, his face draining of color as he looked at the sheer wall of muscle and firepower blocking his only escape.

“Royce...” Julian stammered, his arrogant facade shattering into dust in a matter of seconds. “Now, wait a minute. Let’s be reasonable. This is a misunderstanding. Cordelia was just upset about—about the waitress—!”

“You sent armed men into my hotel,” Royce interrupted, his voice dropping into a register so chilling that even the hardened enforcers behind Julian took an instinctive step back. “You threatened an innocent woman carrying my unborn child. And you thought you could walk out of my building with a smile.”

Julian’s eyes darted frantically toward his four hired thugs, nodding wildly. “Kill him! Do it now!”

The four enforcers lunged forward, drawing their weapons with lightning speed—

BANG! BANG! BANG!

Before their guns could clear leather, the mezzanine erupted in a synchronized, deafening volley of gunfire. Callaway’s men didn't aim to kill; they fired with terrifying, surgical precision directly into the knees and shoulders of Julian’s thugs.

All four men dropped to the marble floor in unison, howling in agonizing pain as their weapons skittered across the polished stone.

Julian stumbled backward, tripping over his own expensive leather shoes, landing hard on his hands and knees right at Royce’s polished oxfords.

Cordelia screamed, running forward to grab her father’s arm, glaring up at Dela with pure, unadulterated venom. “You ruined everything, you filthy little gold-digger! My father is going to—!”

Royce raised his hand slightly.

Two female enforcers stepped forward instantly, grabbing Cordelia by her shoulders and pulling her backward despite her furious thrashing and screaming.

Royce looked down at Julian Vance, who was shaking like a leaf in a winter storm, staring up at the syndicate king with tear-filled eyes of absolute terror.

“Your shipping empire, your real estate holdings, your offshore bank accounts in the Caymans,” Royce recited smoothly, pulling a thick stack of legal documents from Leo’s outstretched hand and dropping them onto Julian’s head like falling leaves. “As of three minutes ago, every single asset bearing the Vance name has been legally seized by Callaway Holdings to settle a multi-million-dollar debt you owe for breaching our dock security contracts.”

Julian clutched the papers, his voice cracking into a desperate sob. “You... you took everything! That’s fifty years of family legacy! We’ll be homeless! We’ll have nothing!”

“You’ll have exactly what you gave to Dela four years ago when you burned her clinic to the ground and left her for dead,” Royce replied coldly. He crouched down, grabbing Julian by his silk tie and lifting his face so their eyes met. “Except I’m not going to kill you, Julian. I’m going to let you live in this city as a nobody. No money, no power, no name. Let’s see how long your high-society friends remember you when you’re sleeping on a park bench.”

Julian collapsed onto the floor, weeping hysterically as the enforcers dragged him and his daughter away toward the service elevators.

The mezzanine fell completely silent once more.

Royce stood up, exhaling a long, steady breath, and turned around to face Dela. The lethal, terrifying syndicate don vanished in an instant, replaced by a man whose entire universe had just knelt before the only woman who mattered.

He reached out, his warm, strong hands gently framing her face, his thumbs wiping away a stray tear that had slipped down her cheek.
