Chapter 3 - THE ART EXPERT DISCOVERED THE MAFIA BOSS'S GRANDFATHER HAD STOLEN MORE THAN A MASTERPIECE—AND WHEN THE REAL HEIR APPEARED, CALLUM HAD TO CHOOSE BETWEEN HIS FAMILY NAME AND THE WOMAN HE WAS FALLING FOR

The letter was written in Italian.

Old-fashioned handwriting.

Careful.

Elegant.

But the words were desperate.

I translated slowly.

"If this reaches anyone, know that I did not leave willingly."

Callum stood beside me.

His face was pale.

I continued.

"Antonio has taken the drawing. He says it belongs to the Russo family now."

I swallowed.

"He has also taken the documents proving Lucia's ownership."

Callum closed his eyes.

I continued.

"Lucia refused to sign. She said she would go to the authorities."

The room felt colder.

I looked at him.

"Callum."

He nodded.

I swallowed.

"Antonio said no one would believe two women against a man with his connections."

Silence.

Then the final line.

"If anything happens to us, the truth is in the second ledger."

I looked up.

"Second ledger?"

Sofia frowned.

"There was only one envelope."

Callum stared at the letter.

"Where is the ledger?"

I looked down.

Then noticed something.

A small symbol in the corner.

A circle.

Three lines.

A cross.

I had seen it before.

In the original provenance records.

On a dealer's stamp.

I searched my notes.

Then found it.

"Here."

Callum leaned forward.

"What is it?"

"A private collection mark."

He frowned.

"Whose?"

I swallowed.

"Bellini."

Silence.

Callum's expression hardened.

"Victor."

I nodded.

"His family may have held the second ledger."

Callum looked toward Gabriel.

"Find him."

Gabriel nodded.

But I reached for Callum's arm.

"Wait."

He looked at me.

"We need to be careful."

His jaw tightened.

"Bellini attacked you."

"I know."

"He threatened you."

"I know."

I held his gaze.

"But if we go after him without evidence, he'll destroy whatever he has."

Callum stared.

For a moment, I saw the old instinct.

The desire to control.

To retaliate.

To solve problems with force.

Then he took a breath.

"You're right."

I blinked.

He smiled faintly.

"Don't look so surprised."

I laughed.

He looked at me.

And for one moment, the room felt smaller.

Warmer.

Less dangerous.

Then Sofia cleared her throat.

"There is something else."

We turned.

She held up the receipt.

"This deposit was not made by Giulia."

Callum frowned.

"Who made it?"

Sofia pointed to the signature.

I read it.

Then froze.

ELENA MILLER.

My stomach dropped.

Callum looked at me.

"Sadie?"

I stared at the paper.

Miller.

My mother's maiden name.

I looked up.

"That was my grandmother."

Silence.

Callum stared.

"What?"

I swallowed.

"Elena Miller was my mother's mother."

Sofia looked between us.

Then whispered:

"She was Lucia Moretti's daughter."

The room went silent.

I stared.

My grandmother.

Lucia's daughter.

The missing woman.

The stolen drawing.

The family secret.

All of it connected to me.

I felt dizzy.

Callum reached toward me.

"Sadie."

I stepped back.

"No."

He stopped.

I shook my head.

"No. That can't be right."

Sofia opened another document.

A birth certificate.

Lucia Moretti.

Mother.

Elena Moretti.

Daughter.

Later renamed Elena Miller.

I stared at the paper.

My grandmother had never spoken about Italy.

She had told my mother she was born in New York.

That her parents died when she was young.

That there was nothing worth remembering.

Now I understood why.

She had been hiding.

From the Russo family.

From Antonio.

From the men who stole everything from her mother.

I looked at Callum.

His face was unreadable.

Then he whispered:

"Sadie."

I shook my head.

"Your family stole from mine."

He closed his eyes.

"I know."

I stepped backward.

"Your grandfather destroyed my family."

He nodded.

"I know."

Tears filled my eyes.

"And you hired me to authenticate the drawing."

He looked at me.

"Yes."

I swallowed.

"Did you know?"

His expression changed.

"No."

I stared.

He stepped closer.

"I swear I didn't know."

I wanted to believe him.

But trust was suddenly a dangerous thing.

I looked down.

"I need time."

Callum nodded.

"Take it."

I turned toward the door.

Then stopped.

"Callum."

He looked up.

"If the drawing belongs to my family, what happens?"

He took a breath.

Then answered.

"We return it."

I stared.

He continued.

"Whatever the law requires. Whatever the evidence proves."

My eyes filled.

He looked at me.

"I won't protect my family's theft."

For a moment, I could not speak.

Then I nodded.

And left.

***

That evening, I called my mother.

She was having a good day.

She recognized my voice.

"Sadie?"

"Hi, Mom."

"Where are you?"

"Rome."

She laughed softly.

"Rome? Your grandmother loved Rome."

My breath caught.

"She did?"

"Yes."

I swallowed.

"Mom, did Grandma ever talk about her mother?"

Silence.

Then my mother's voice changed.

"Lucia."

I froze.

"What?"

She whispered:

"Her name was Lucia."

Tears filled my eyes.

"Mom."

She continued.

"Grandma said Lucia was brave."

I covered my mouth.

My mother spoke slowly.

"She said some people stole things from her family."

I began crying.

"Mom, why didn't you tell me?"

She sounded confused.

"Tell you what, sweetheart?"

I closed my eyes.

The disease was taking her again.

I swallowed.

"Nothing."

She smiled through the phone.

"Are you eating?"

I laughed through tears.

"Yes."

"Good."

Then she whispered:

"Be careful, Sadie."

I closed my eyes.

"I will."

***

At midnight, Callum knocked on my hotel door.

I opened it.

He stood outside holding a folder.

"May I come in?"

I hesitated.

Then nodded.

He entered.

Placed the folder on the table.

"What is it?"

He looked at me.

"Proof."

I frowned.

"Of what?"

He opened the folder.

Bank records.

Shipping documents.

Letters.

A signed confession.

I stared.

Callum continued.

"My grandfather stole the drawing."

I nodded.

He swallowed.

"But he didn't kill Lucia."

I looked up.

"What?"

Callum pointed to a document.

"Victor Bellini's grandfather did."

Silence.

I stared.

He continued.

"Antonio paid Bellini to make Lucia disappear."

My stomach turned.

"Then Antonio was responsible."

Callum nodded.

"Yes."

He looked down.

"And Bellini kept the second ledger."

I stared.

"Why?"

Callum's expression hardened.

"Blackmail."

I swallowed.

"Victor has been using it against your family."

He nodded.

"For decades."

I looked at him.

"And now?"

Callum took a breath.

"Now he wants control of Russo Fine Holdings."

I stared.

"The art company?"

He nodded.

"Along with several shipping properties."

I looked down.

He continued.

"He's threatening to release the evidence unless I sign everything over."

I swallowed.

"What are you going to do?"

Callum looked at me.

"Release it myself."

I froze.

"What?"

He nodded.

"All of it."

I stared.

"Callum, that could destroy you."

He smiled sadly.

"Maybe."

I looked at him.

He continued.

"But the truth belongs to your family."

Tears filled my eyes.

For a moment, neither spoke.

Then I whispered:

"Why are you doing this?"

He looked at me.

His expression softened.

"Because it's right."

I swallowed.

"And because I love you."

The words hung between us.

I froze.

Callum looked away.

"I'm sorry. I shouldn't have said that now."

I stared.

He continued.

"You don't owe me anything."

Tears filled my eyes.

I stepped closer.

"Callum."

He looked up.

I whispered:

"I don't know what to do with that."

He nodded.

"I understand."

I looked down.

Then took his hand.

For a moment, neither spoke.

May you like

And in the silence, I realized that love could begin in the middle of a disaster.

But whether it survived depended on what happened next.
