Chapter 4 - The Purge of Twin Falls

Down on the snow-slicked street, Grant Warren stopped dead in his tracks.

The arrogant, terrifying stepfather who had ruled our home with fear for fifteen years looked around at the six blacked-out SUVs surrounding his cruisers, his face draining of all its ruddy color.

Over a dozen heavily armed Vance syndicate enforcers stepped out of the vehicles, clad in dark tactical gear, holding military-grade submachine guns quietly at their sides. They didn't shout. They didn't raise their weapons aggressively. They simply stood in an impenetrable circle, their cold, professional discipline making the five local county deputies look like helpless children playing with toy guns.

Deputy Miller’s hand froze over his holster. He looked at the tactical gear, recognized the subtle gold crest stamped on the SUV doors, and instantly raised both hands in the air, backing away from Grant.

"Mr... Mr. Vance," Deputy Miller stammered, his voice cracking loudly in the quiet street. "We... we didn't know this property was under your personal jurisdiction, sir. We were executing an emergency county warrant for a fleeing suspect—"

"Shut your mouth, Miller," Victor said softly. He didn't raise his voice, but every word carried across the frozen street like a crack of thunder.

Victor took three slow, deliberate steps toward Grant Warren, stopping just five feet away. The sheer physical authority radiating from the Mafia Don made Grant shrink back against the hood of the police cruiser.

"Where is she?!" Grant screamed out, trying desperately to use his official title as a shield, his voice high and frantic. "Where is Ellie Reed?! She stole $10,000 from my official safe! She's a fleeing felon, Vance! You are harboring a fugitive from county law!"

Victor slowly pulled his right hand from his trouser pocket.

He didn't pull a gun. He pulled a thick, leather-bound document folder and tossed it carelessly onto the snow at Grant’s boots.

"Inside that file," Victor explained in an arctic tone, "are the bank records for your private offshore account in the Cayman Islands. It details twenty-four separate wire transfers totaling $1.2 million, sent to you by the Apex Development Corporation in exchange for illegal zoning permits on syndicate land."

Grant gasped, his eyes bulging in pure, unadulterated horror as he stared at the folder in the snow.

"That's not all," Victor continued, taking another step closer, leaning down until his sharp face was inches from Grant's terrified eyes. "Thirty minutes ago, my legal team handed a complete, unredacted copy of those files to the United States Attorney’s Office in Boise. At this exact moment, federal agents are raiding your home, your office at the courthouse, and the private bank accounts registered under your name."

Grant’s knees gave out completely. He collapsed onto his knees in the freezing slush, clutching his head, weeping hysterically as his entire world, his power, and his freedom dissolved into nothingness.

"You ruined me..." Grant sobbed into the snow. "You ruined my life... over a worthless, penniless girl..."

CRACK!

Victor’s hand lashed out in a single, blinding strike, catching Grant across the face and sending him crashing sideways onto the icy pavement!

"Her name is Ellie Vance," Victor roared, his deep voice shaking the very glass of the surrounding buildings with a terrifying, apocalyptic fury that made every deputy on the street shudder in fear. "She is the daughter of Clara Vance! She is my blood! And for fifteen years, you abused her, stole from her, and put dark marks on her skin under my sky!"

Victor turned toward Deputy Miller and the three trembling county officers.

"Arrest him," Victor commanded flatly. "Take him to the federal holding facility in Boise. If a single hair on his head is harmed before he faces a federal judge for public corruption, I will hold this entire sheriff's department personally accountable."

"Yes, sir! Immediately, Mr. Vance!" Deputy Miller yelled, practically sprinting forward with heavy iron handcuffs, roughly dragging the weeping, ruined Grant Warren off the street and slamming him into the back seat of the cruiser.

Within two minutes, the police cruisers sped away down the highway, their sirens silent, leaving the snowy street completely clear.

Up on the penthouse roof, the heavy double doors opened, and Victor stepped out onto the helipad.

The cold wind blew his dark hair back, but his face was warm, relaxed, and entirely peaceful as he walked over to where Noah, Grace, and I were sitting inside the heated cabin of a massive, luxury twin-engine helicopter.

He stepped inside the warm cabin, sitting on the plush leather seat across from us, looking at my children with gentle gray eyes.

"Is he gone?" I asked softly, holding Noah’s small hand in mine.

"He will spend the next twenty years in a federal penitentiary, Ellie," Victor promised, reaching out to lay a thick, official legal folder on the table between us. "Your record is completely clear. The false Amber Alert has been expunged from the state wire. And your mother, Linda, has been safely removed from the town house and placed in a private estate in Sun Valley with round-the-clock medical care and security."

Tears overflowed my lashes once again—pure, beautiful, healing tears of justice and absolute freedom.

"And us?" I whispered, looking around the luxurious helicopter cabin. "Where are we going?"

Victor looked out the window as the helicopter’s powerful rotors began to spin, lifting us smoothly off the roof, soaring high into the clear blue Idaho sky, above the mountains, above the Snake River Canyon, and far away from the dark shadows of Twin Falls forever.

He turned back to me, his hands reaching out to gently cover mine, a radiant, proud smile lighting up his handsome face.

"We are going home, Ellie," Victor whispered softly. "To the Vance estate in Boise. Where you and your children belong."
