Chapter 5 - The Wedding of the Underworld and Happily Ever After

Six months after that stormy night in the Maragold Room, the grand cathedral of St. Jude in downtown Chicago was closed to the public. Armed guards in bespoke black suits stood shoulder-to-shoulder along the limestone steps, while sleek black Maybachs and vintage Rolls-Royces lined the avenue for four blocks in every direction.
It was an event that shook the city’s high society and underworld to its very core.
The Moretti syndicate was hosting a wedding—not a political arrangement, not a forced alliance of convenience, but a match born of fire, blood, and absolute devotion.
Inside the vaulted sanctuary, stained-glass windows cast brilliant pools of ruby, sapphire, and gold light across the polished white marble aisle. The pews were packed with powerful figures: capos, judges, politicians, and business moguls, all sitting in hushed, respectful silence. At the altar stood Jack Moretti, clad in a masterclass bespoke tuxedo, his dark eyes fixed entirely on the heavy oak doors at the back of the chapel.
And then, the organ swelled.
The heavy doors swung wide open, and the breath caught in every throat in the room.
I walked down the aisle on the arm of Rocco, who had become a fiercely loyal brotherly figure to me over the past six months. I wore a gown crafted from miles of pristine white silk and French lace, designed to perfection. The sweetheart neckline swept gracefully across my shoulders, and though the delicate lace partially covered my arms, the silvery, jagged edges of my old burn scars peeked through the sheer fabric like a badge of honor—a permanent testament to every battle I had fought and won.
On my right hand, a breathtaking diamond ring caught the stained-glass light, sparkling with fierce brilliance. But I wasn't looking at the ring, and I wasn't looking at the crowd of powerful men staring in awe.
My eyes were locked entirely on Jack.
As I reached the altar, Rocco gently placed my hand into Jack’s warm, steady palm. Jack’s fingers closed around mine with a firm, unbreakable grip, his dark eyes shining with an intensity and depth of emotion that made my heart swell to bursting.
“You take my breath away,” Jack whispered, his voice thick with unadulterated awe as he lifted my veil.
“You always said I had steady hands,” I whispered back with a soft, genuine smile.
“And now you hold an entire empire,” he replied, leaning down to press a tender, lingering kiss against my knuckles—right over the old scars Ethan had once mocked.
The ceremony was brief, solemn, and absolute. When the priest pronounced us husband and wife, Jack didn’t hesitate. He pulled me into his arms and kissed me in front of the entire underworld—a passionate, sealing vow that told every rival, every enemy, and every doubter in the room that I was his queen, untouchable, unbreakable, and fiercely loved.
The reception that followed in the grand ballroom of the Moretti estate was legendary. Hundreds of guests dined on world-class cuisine, raised crystal flutes of vintage champagne, and toasted to the new era of peace and prosperity brought about by the boss and his brilliant, fearless wife.
Late in the evening, as fireworks lit up the Chicago skyline outside the grand ballroom windows, little Leo ran across the polished floor, laughing as he chased a remote-controlled robot across the rug. Ruth sat nearby, smiling warmly as she watched him play with a tiny silver replacement piece Jack had personally sourced for his favorite toy.
I stood on the candlelit balcony overlooking the sprawling gardens, the cool night breeze carrying the scent of pine and lake water. Footsteps approached softly behind me, and a familiar warmth wrapped around my waist as Jack’s arms slid securely around my shoulders, pulling me back against his solid, unyielding chest.
“Tired?” he murmured, resting his chin gently against my hair.
“Never,” I said, leaning back into his embrace, watching the bright colors of the fireworks burst against the dark velvet sky. “I used to think broken things couldn't be fixed. I thought once you were damaged, you were just discarded.”
Jack turned me gently in his arms, his dark eyes locking onto mine with fierce, undying devotion. He reached out, his warm thumb gently tracing the line of my jaw, down my neck, and over the scars on my collarbone.

“Some things aren't broken, Lily,” he whispered softly, pressing his lips to my forehead. “They’re just waiting for the right person to recognize their true strength.”
I smiled, resting my hand over his heart, feeling its steady, powerful beat beneath my palm. The past was gone. The scars were just armor. And our story had finally found its happily ever after.
