Chapter 1 — The Woman She Tried to Throw Away
The old woman stood quietly in the middle of the luxury hotel lobby.
Her coat was faded.
Her shoes were dusty.
Her hands were wrinkled, holding a small cloth bag that looked painfully out of place beneath the crystal chandeliers.
Guests turned to stare.
The marble floor shone beneath her feet, but the woman did not look ashamed.
Then Vanessa Caldwell walked toward her.
Vanessa wore a fitted white dress, diamond earrings, and the cold smile of someone who believed money made her untouchable.
She looked the old woman up and down with disgust.
Then she pointed toward the entrance.
“Get out. You don’t belong here.”
The lobby went silent.
The old woman did not cry.
She did not beg.
She only stood up slowly, calm as if she had been waiting for that sentence.
Then she looked directly at Vanessa and said,
“I pretended to be poor... to test my daughter-in-law.”
Vanessa’s face changed.
The old woman lifted her chin.
“This hotel... is mine.”
