Chapter 2

Behind closed doors, while Liam slept fitfully in my arms—waking up every hour in cold sweats, terrified that the monsters would take him back to the floor—I was dismantling Jeffrey’s entire world piece by piece. You see, Jeffrey was a master of corporate deception, but he was financially illiterate. When we married, he was a mid-level manager with grandiose ambitions and zero capital. I was the one who funded his startup, secured venture capital backing from my family's network, and personally drafted the corporate charter for Apex Global Innovations. More importantly, when I left for London, I never surrendered my controlling 65% voting shares. Jeffrey was merely the CEO by my grace; I was the sole owner of the holding company that owned the patent portfolio, the real estate deeds, and the bank accounts.

On Tuesday morning, exactly three days after my return, Jeffrey strutted into the master bedroom while I was dressing. He wore a smug, patronizing smirk that made my skin crawl.

“Madeline, we need to have a civil conversation about the future,” Jeffrey announced, leaning against the doorframe like a corporate mogul addressing a minor subordinate. “Cynthia and Austin are part of our family now. You need to accept that. If you decide to stay in this house, you will live in the guest wing on the third floor. I’ve already consulted my divorce attorney. Given that you abandoned your family for two years in London to pursue your career, alienation of affection is easily proven. You’ll walk away with a modest monthly stipend, but the company, the house, and Liam stay with me.”

I turned slowly from the vanity mirror, meeting his arrogant gaze with a chilling, deadpan calm that visibly unnerved him. “Is that right, Jeffrey? You think you’re going to divorce me, strip me of my child, and keep the multi-million-dollar empire I built for you?”

Jeffrey scoffed, waving a dismissive hand. “Don’t be melodramatic, Madeline. Women like you always think they’re irreplaceable. But times have changed. Cynthia brings warmth and stability to my life. You brought spreadsheets and cold corporate strategies. Face facts: nobody wants you here. Even your own son was terrified of you when you walked through that door.”

That last comment about Liam was a tactical error of catastrophic proportions. It triggered a cold fury so intense that my vision literally blurred at the edges. But I didn't raise my voice. I simply picked up my leather briefcase, walked past him, and headed straight down to the corporate headquarters of Apex Global Innovations in downtown Atlanta.

When I walked through the sleek glass doors of the executive floor, the reception desk receptionist gasped. Word of my return hadn't filtered down to the lower tiers yet because Jeffrey had deliberately kept my homecoming a tightly guarded secret, intending to file emergency custody and asset-freezing injunctions behind my back at the end of the week.

“Mrs. Vance! We... we didn't expect you back from London so soon,” the receptionist stammered, frantically trying to hide her smartphone.

“Save it, Sarah,” I replied smoothly, marching past the security turnstiles with my master executive keycard gleaming in my hand. The security system beeped a melodious green light. Access Granted: Supreme Chairperson.

I walked straight into the executive boardroom where Jeffrey was holding a high-stakes quarterly strategy meeting with our top investors—venture capitalists from New York who had poured twenty million dollars into our latest medical technology patents. Cynthia was sitting right beside him at the head of the mahogany table, acting as his corporate secretary, wearing a designer pantsuit bought with company expense accounts.

Jeffrey stopped mid-sentence as the heavy oak doors swung open. His face turned the color of curdled milk. “Madeline! What the hell are you doing here? Security! Escort this woman out of the building immediately!”

None of the security guards moved. They knew who held the master voting shares. I stepped into the center of the room, my heels clicking sharply against the polished concrete floor like clockwork counts of impending doom.

“Sit down, Jeffrey,” I said, my voice carrying an effortless, razor-sharp authority that commanded absolute silence across the entire boardroom.

Cynthia stood up, her face flushing with indignation. “How dare you barge in here looking like a lunatic? Jeffrey is the CEO of this company! You have no authority here anymore! Security, drag her out!”

I didn't yell. I simply pulled a sleek USB drive from my pocket, walked over to the central conference AV console, and plugged it directly into the master presentation port. With a few swift taps on the touch screen, I bypassed the firewall and routed the audio file from my phone through the state-of-the-art surround sound speakers of the boardroom.

The room filled instantly with the crystal-clear audio recording from Saturday afternoon in my mansion:

“Don’t let that boy sit at the table. He’s gotten used to eating on the floor like a dog...” Noelle’s shrill voice echoed off the acoustic paneling.

“Look at him, Jeffrey. He’s acting like a wild animal again...” Cynthia’s mocking cackle reverberated through the room.

“Keep him away from Austin. He’ll scare him...” Jeffrey’s cold, callous voice droned lazily from the speakers.

The New York venture capitalists froze, their coffee cups hovering halfway to their mouths. The color drained completely from Jeffrey’s face as he lunged forward, desperately trying to yank the cables out of the console. “Turn that off! It’s a deepfake! It’s fabricated bullshit!”

“Sit down, Jeffrey,” I repeated, my tone dropping an octave into pure ice. “That audio was authenticated by a certified forensic audio engineer yesterday morning. But that’s merely the opening act.”

With another tap on the console, a second document flashed onto the giant 85-inch LED screen behind the conference table. It was a comprehensive forensic audit report detailing every single dollar Jeffrey had embezzled from the corporate accounts over the past twenty-four months—including over $450,000 in luxury vehicles, designer handbags for Cynthia, plastic surgery procedures, and mortgage payments for a secret beachfront condo registered under Cynthia’s maiden name.

The lead venture capitalist, a formidable senior partner named Jonathan Vance (no relation, thankfully), adjusted his glasses, staring at the financial spreadsheets in absolute horror. He looked up at Jeffrey with eyes cold enough to freeze nitrogen.

“Mr. Vance,” Jonathan said slowly, his voice dripping with venomous contempt. “You told us your wife was managing international operations while you spearheaded domestic growth. You embezzled half a million dollars of investor capital to fund an extramarital affair and treated your own toddler like an outcast living under a table?”

Jeffrey clutched the edge of the mahogany table, trembling violently. “It’s... it’s a misunderstanding! Madeline is vindictive! She hacked my accounts!”

“I didn't hack anything, Jeffrey,” I smiled coldly, stepping right up to his side and whispering so only he could hear. “Because I never transferred ownership of the intellectual property holding company. You were just a puppet CEO playing dress-up while I held all the strings.”

I turned to address the stunned investors in the room. “Effective immediately, as the 65% majority voting shareholder and sole patent holder, I am terminating Jeffrey Vance as Chief Executive Officer of Apex Global Innovations for gross financial malfeasance, moral turpitude, and breach of fiduciary duty. Furthermore, corporate counsel has already been instructed to file immediate criminal charges for embezzlement and fraud against both Jeffrey Vance and Cynthia Hayes.”

Cynthia let out a blood-curdling scream of pure panic, bursting into theatrical tears as she grabbed her designer purse and bolted for the boardroom doors. “This is insane! You can’t do this to us!”

Jeffrey collapsed heavily into his executive chair, his glittering corporate kingdom dissolving into ash around him in less than ten minutes. He looked up at me with shattered, pleading eyes, realizing too late that the woman he had tried to discard and destroy was the architect of his entire existence.

“Madeline... please,” Jeffrey whispered, his voice cracking desperately. “We’ve been married... think of our family...”

I leaned down, looking him dead in the eye with absolute, unyielding clarity.

“Our family died the moment you made my son sit on the floor while your mistress ate cake at my table. Now, get out of my building.”
