Chapter 3 - Her Dead Mother Was Alive—But the Mafia Boss Learned the Woman He Loved Had Inherited the One Thing His Family Would Kill to ControlThe FBI hated Adrien.

Adrien appeared to enjoy that.
Special Agent Naomi Carter met us inside an abandoned federal office near the waterfront.
She was forty-something, sharp-eyed, and unimpressed by expensive men.
“You understand,” she told Adrien, “that cooperating today doesn't erase the last fifteen years.”
“I would be disappointed if it did.”
I looked at him.
That answer surprised me.
Carter noticed.
Good investigators noticed everything.
The plan was simple enough to explain and complicated enough to fail.
I would go to Pier 19.
Wearing a wire.
Adrien would not.
He objected.
I agreed with Carter.
“You're the first person Sebastian will look for.”
“I don't care.”
“I do.”
That stopped him.
I continued.
“If you actually want to protect me, help me do this intelligently.”
His jaw tightened.
Then he nodded.
Progress.
Midnight.
Pier 19 smelled of river water, diesel, and rust.
I walked alone.
Barely.
My ribs were taped.
My lip still swollen.
A microphone sat beneath my blouse.
Carter's voice murmured through tiny earpiece.
“Keep moving.”
Warehouse door opened.
Marcus stood inside.
My entire body reacted before mind did.
Hands cold.
Breathing shallow.
He smiled.
“There she is.”
I stopped.
“You look terrible.”
“You did that.”
“Don't be dramatic.”
That sentence.
I had heard it a hundred times.
After insults.
After grabbing.
After breaking my phone.
After making me apologize for things he had done.
Something changed inside me.
Fear remained.
But shame didn't.
“You beat me.”
His smile disappeared.
“You embarrassed me.”
“You threatened to kill me.”
“You knew how to provoke me.”
“No.”
I looked directly at him.
“You chose it.”
Marcus stepped forward.
I didn't move.
“You're not very powerful without apartment door locked, are you?”
His face changed.
Good.
Then a voice came from darkness.
“Enough.”
Sebastian Viscari appeared.
He was seventy-one.
Silver hair.
Perfect coat.
He looked like a senator.
Not monster.
Monsters rarely cooperate with appearance.
Behind him stood my mother.
Catherine Vale.
Alive.
Fifty-seven.
Older than photograph in my memory.
Thin.
Hands bound.
But unmistakably her.
Everything else disappeared.
“Mom.”
She cried.
“Lena.”
I moved.
Marcus grabbed me.
I recoiled.
Sebastian smiled.
“Touching.”
“Let her go.”
“Soon.”
“What do you want?”
“A signature.”
Of course.
There was always paperwork behind violence.
Sebastian produced folder.
Inside were trust documents.
Lorenzo Viscari had created them eighteen years earlier.
Not for me.
For victims.
Catherine had discovered that hundreds of millions in assets belonging to Sebastian's network could be legally traced to criminal proceeds.
Lorenzo transferred controlling shares in three holding companies into an irrevocable trust pending exposure.
Catherine became trustee.
Then Lorenzo died.
Catherine disappeared.
The trust required successor.
Me.
I laughed once.
“You kidnapped my mother over paperwork?”
“Over approximately $640 million.”
That explained enthusiasm.
“If I die?”
“The trust transfers to federal receivership.”
“So you need me alive.”
“Yes.”
“And cooperative.”
“Yes.”
I looked at Marcus.
“That why he dated me?”
Marcus smiled.
The realization hurt more than expected.
“How long?”
“Fourteen months.”
“From beginning?”
“Yes.”
Every flower.
Every dinner.
Every apology.
Every “I love you.”
Assignment.
My stomach turned.
“Your father's gambling debts?”
Sebastian answered.
“Useful leverage.”
Marcus snapped:
“You said she'd never know.”
Sebastian looked at him with mild contempt.
“You were always temporary.”
Marcus's face changed.
I almost pitied him.
Almost.
Sebastian placed pen before me.
“Sign.”
“No.”
He struck Catherine.
My body moved.
Marcus held me.
“Don't!”
Catherine shouted:
“Lena, no!”
Sebastian looked at me.
“Sign.”
I thought of Adrien.
Not because I expected rescue.
Because he had done something Marcus never had.
He let me decide.
Even when he hated my decision.
That difference had become a compass.
“No.”
Sebastian sighed.
Then gunfire erupted outside.
He smiled.
“You brought them.”
My blood froze.
He had expected FBI.
Warehouse doors slammed.
Metal shutters dropped.
Carter's voice vanished from earpiece.
Jammer.
Sebastian drew gun.
“Now we find out whether Adrien loves you enough to make same mistake his father did.”
“What mistake?”
“Choosing a woman over family.”
A side door exploded inward.
Adrien entered through smoke.
Of course he had ignored plan.
I was furious.
Also relieved.
Human beings were inconsistent.
“Let them go,” he said.
Sebastian laughed.
“Just like Lorenzo.”
Adrien's gun remained low.
“My father chose evidence over you.”
“My brother chose weakness.”
“Your brother?”
I stared.
Adrien looked at me.
Sebastian smiled.
“You didn't tell her?”
“Not relevant.”
“It is to me.”
Sebastian looked delighted.
“Lorenzo wasn't Adrien's father.”
Adrien's face hardened.
“Stop.”
“He was his uncle.”
I stared.
Sebastian continued.
“Adrien's mother had him before marriage. Lorenzo raised him.”
“Who was his biological father?”
Sebastian smiled.
“Me.”
Silence.
Adrien looked at me.
“I found out two years ago.”
My mind struggled.
Sebastian was Adrien's biological father.
My mother's uncle.
That made Adrien and my mother first cousins genetically.
Adrien and I remained distant relatives.
But more importantly—
Sebastian had been hunting his own son.
“You tried to kill Adrien's father,” I whispered.
Sebastian smiled.
“Lorenzo stole my son.”
Adrien's expression did not move.
“You were never my father.”
“I gave you blood.”
“That's biology.”
A pause.
“Lorenzo gave me a choice about what kind of man to become.”
Sebastian laughed.
“And look what you became.”
That hit.
Adrien did not deny it.
“I became many things I'm not proud of.”
He looked at me.
“I'm still becoming something else.”
Then everything happened.
Catherine drove shoulder into Sebastian.
I stomped Marcus's foot.
He loosened grip.
I twisted.
Adrien fired at overhead light.
Darkness.
FBI breached rear wall.
Chaos.
Marcus grabbed me again.
This time I was ready.
I drove elbow into throat.
He choked.
I ran.
Gunshot.
Adrien jerked.
Blood appeared across shirt.
“Adrien!”
Sebastian fired again.
Catherine knocked weapon aside.
Agent Carter entered.
“Federal agents! Drop it!”
Sebastian aimed at Catherine.
I picked up fallen metal pipe.
Swung.
It hit his wrist.
Gun dropped.
Carter tackled him.
Marcus ran.
Dante caught him outside.
Adrien collapsed.
I reached him.
Blood spread near shoulder.
“Look at me.”
His eyes opened.
I pressed hands against wound.
He smiled weakly.
“You sound like me.”
“Shut up.”
“Very romantic.”
“You are not dying.”
“Wasn't planning to.”
“You ignored the plan.”
“Yes.”
“I'm furious.”
“Good.”
“Why good?”
“Means you're planning future argument.”
Tears hit my face.
He touched wrist.
Not grabbed.
Touched.
“Lena.”
“What?”
“Your mother.”
I looked.
Catherine was alive.
Free.
Crying.
Then Adrien whispered:
“Go to her.”
I stared.
“You're bleeding.”
“Carter has medics.”
“Adrien—”
“Go.”
He was giving me choice even now.
I kissed his forehead.
Not lips.
Not yet.
Then ran to my mother.
She caught me.
Eighteen years disappeared and didn't.
I was thirty and seven simultaneously.
“You left me.”
“I know.”
“I thought you were dead.”
“I know.”
“I needed you.”
“I know.”
I hit her chest.
Once.
Weakly.
Then held her.
She held me.
“I am sorry.”
No excuses.
That mattered.
Across warehouse paramedics lifted Adrien.
His eyes found mine.
I held mother's hand.
He nodded.
For the first time in my life, nobody was asking me to choose which person I was allowed to love.
Then Carter walked over carrying trust folder.
“Ms. Vale.”
I looked at her.
“There's something else.”
“What?”
“The trust isn't merely money.”
She opened final page.
Lorenzo had included controlling evidence over legitimate Viscari companies.
Enough to dismantle Sebastian's financial empire.
Enough to destroy Adrien's too.
I looked toward ambulance.
Carter said quietly:
“If you activate this trust, Adrien Viscari could lose almost everything.”
My mother squeezed my hand.
And suddenly I understood the final trap Lorenzo had left behind.
May you like
The man who had just taken a bullet helping save me might survive.
But I could be the woman who took away his empire.
