Chapter 4 - The Shadow of the PastSix months later.

The morning sun broke brilliantly over the lush green hills of the Moretti estate, casting a warm, golden light across the stone courtyard and sprawling gardens.

Inside the estate's sunlit morning room, four-year-old Noah was happily giggling, chasing a energetic golden retriever puppy across the Persian rug, his bright hazel eyes filled with pure, unbroken joy.

He wore a soft yellow sweater, clean denim jeans, and on his left wrist sat the polished silver bracelet, its three engraved stars gleaming under the sunlight.

I sat at a wide mahogany breakfast table, wearing an elegant cream silk dress, sipping a warm cup of coffee while reviewing Noah’s private school enrollment applications. Over the past half-year, my life had completely transformed. The scuffed flats and faded hotel apron were gone, replaced by a life of dignity, respect, and profound purpose.

A pair of broad, warm hands settled gently onto my shoulders from behind.

I smiled, leaning my head back against Luca Moretti’s broad chest.

He looked striking, dressed in a crisp dark grey suit, his dark hair neatly styled, his jaw clean-shaven. Over the past six months, Luca had systematically restructured his family’s business empire, severing all ties to illegal street operations and transitioning eighty percent of the Moretti assets into legitimate international real estate, maritime shipping, and children's medical foundations.

The feared mob boss had become the city's most respected corporate leader and a devoted, fiercely protective uncle.

“You’re up early, Emma,” Luca murmured softly against my ear, his deep voice sending a pleasant shiver down my spine.

“I was double-checking Noah’s security protocol for his speech therapy class this afternoon,” I replied, turning my head to look up into his handsome face.

Luca smiled warmly, reaching down to press a soft, lingering kiss against my forehead. “Antonio has assigned four veteran guards to his escort. He’s completely safe, my love.”

My love.

Over the past three months, the deep respect and shared devotion we held for Noah had blossomed into an undeniable, intense romantic bond. Luca treated me not as an employee, but as an equal partner—a woman whose courage had saved his soul and rebuilt his home.

Suddenly, Antonio stepped into the morning room, holding a sleek silver tray bearing a single, official leather folder.

“Don Luca,” Antonio said respectfully, offering a subtle bow. “The final legal adoption decrees have arrived from the State Supreme Court.”

Luca’s dark eyes lit up with intense emotion. He took the folder, opening it flat on the breakfast table.

Inside lay the official state seal certifying that Noah Moretti was now legally recognized as the son and primary heir of Luca Moretti and Emma Vance.

I gasped softly, tears of pure joy welling in my eyes as I looked at my name printed alongside Luca's on the official parchment.

“He’s officially ours, Emma,” Luca whispered, his voice thick with emotion as he wrapped his arm tightly around my waist, pulling me close to his side.

Noah ran over to us, holding his new puppy in his arms, looking up at us with wide, curious hazel eyes. “Daddy? Mommy? Why are you crying?”

Luca dropped down onto one knee, sweeping both Noah and me into his broad, protective arms, holding us tightly against his heart.

“We’re crying because we’re happy, buddy,” Luca said softly, kissing Noah’s cheek. “Because no one will ever be able to take you away from us ever again.”

Noah grinned brightly, throwing his small arms around Luca’s neck. “I love you, Daddy! I love you, Mommy!”

Luca looked up at me over Noah’s shoulder, his dark eyes glowing with an intense, everlasting love that filled every corner of my heart.

The terrifying night under the rainy hotel awning, the cold streets, and the dark violence of the past were officially buried forever. Standing in the sunlit room of our home, surrounded by absolute protection, warmth, and genuine love, our unbroken family stepped forward into a brilliant, prosperous new future.
