Chapter 4 - The Mafia Boss Took a Bullet for Her—Then She Discovered the One Secret That Could Bring Down Both FamiliesLuca survived.

The bullet passed through his side without hitting an organ.
The doctor called him lucky.
Luca called the doctor dramatic.
Nora called Luca an idiot.
“You were shot.”
“I noticed.”
“You collapsed.”
“Temporarily.”
“You lost enough blood to require a transfusion.”
Luca looked toward Marco.
“Why is she allowed in here?”
Marco smiled.
“Because I'm enjoying this.”
Nora folded her arms.
Luca lay in a private medical suite owned by one of his companies.
Forty-eight hours had passed.
She had barely slept.
“You pushed me out of the way.”
“Yes.”
“You could have died.”
“Yes.”
“Stop saying yes.”
“No.”
She glared.
Luca smiled.
It was infuriating.
And reassuring.
The doctor entered, checked the wound, and warned Luca against leaving for another day.
Luca ignored him.
Nora did not.
“You're staying.”
Luca looked at her.
“Was that an order?”
“Yes.”
His eyebrow lifted.
Nora realized what she had done.
“Sorry.”
“Don't apologize.”
He settled against the pillow.
“I like it.”
Her face warmed.
Marco abruptly decided he had business elsewhere.
The door closed.
Silence.
Nora sat beside the bed.
“I thought you were dead.”
Luca's amusement disappeared.
“I know.”
“I don't want anyone dying because of me.”
“I didn't get shot because of you.”
“They were aiming at me.”
“And I chose to move.”
“Why?”
Luca looked at her.
“You know why.”
Her pulse changed.
“No.”
“Yes.”
“Say it.”
His expression softened.
“Nora.”
“Say it.”
He was silent for a long time.
“Because I care about you.”
She looked down.
“That's dangerous.”
“For me or you?”
“Both.”
“Yes.”
She looked back at him.
Then leaned forward.
Luca didn't move.
She stopped inches from him.
His eyes searched hers.
“Are you sure?”
Nora almost laughed.
Of course he would ask.
“Yes.”
She kissed him.
It wasn't desperate.
It wasn't possession.
It wasn't payment for being rescued.
It was simply a choice.
Hers.
Luca touched her cheek only after she leaned closer.
When the kiss ended, his forehead rested lightly against hers.
“No promises tonight,” he whispered.
“Why?”
“Because you've had enough men telling you what your future looks like.”
Nora closed her eyes.
“Okay.”
The following morning, everything changed.
Marco discovered who owned the SUV.
Price Development.
Richard Price stopped pretending.
Federal investigators had also begun asking questions.
The flash drive had reached an attorney Nora selected herself, with copies delivered to two separate secure locations.
For the first time, destroying Nora would no longer destroy the evidence.
That made her safer.
It also made Richard desperate.
Then Cameron called.
Not Luca.
Nora.
She had a new secured phone.
Only four people had the number.
Cameron shouldn't have been able to reach it.
But he did.
“Nora.”
She almost hung up.
“Wait.”
Something in his voice stopped her.
Fear.
Real fear.
“My father knows.”
“Knows what?”
“That I gave you the Isabella documents.”
Nora stood.
“Where are you?”
“Doesn't matter.”
“It does if you're asking for help.”
Silence.
Then Cameron laughed bitterly.
“Look at us.”
“What do you want?”
“My father is going to kill me.”
Nora felt nothing.
Then hated herself for feeling nothing.
“You should go to the police.”
“He owns police.”
“Federal authorities.”
“He'll find me before I get there.”
Nora closed her eyes.
Cameron had terrorized her.
Controlled her.
Humiliated her.
He had grabbed her wrist two nights earlier.
Part of her wanted to hang up.
Another part refused to become someone who measured whether people deserved safety before offering it.
“Where are you?”
Luca entered the room just as she wrote the address.
He saw her face.
“What?”
“Cameron.”
His expression hardened.
“He wants protection.”
“No.”
Nora stared.
Luca exhaled.
“I know.”
“Do you?”
“You're going to help him.”
“Yes.”
“Then we help him.”
She studied Luca.
“You hate him.”
“Yes.”
“He hurt me.”
“I know.”
“Then why?”
Luca picked up his jacket carefully because of the wound.
“Because you asked.”
They found Cameron in an abandoned office owned by Price Development.
He looked terrible.
Unshaven.
Blood on his collar.
One eye swollen.
When he saw Luca, he nearly backed through the wall.
“You brought him?”
Nora stared.
“Who did you expect?”
Cameron looked at Luca.
“My father knows about the drive.”
“We established that.”
“He knows the FBI is involved.”
Luca stopped.
“How?”
“He has someone inside.”
Marco swore.
Cameron reached into a desk.
Every weapon in the room pointed at him.
“Relax.”
He removed a ledger.
Paper.
Old-fashioned.
“My father kept this because he didn't trust digital records.”
Luca opened it.
Names.
Dates.
Payments.
Judges.
Police officers.
Contractors.
Politicians.
Then one name.
Anthony Russo.
Luca's face became stone.
Cameron spoke quietly.
“There's more.”
“What?”
“My father didn't only cover up Isabella's death.”
Luca looked up.
“He ordered Anthony to scare her.”
Silence.
“He wanted leverage over your father.”
Nora whispered, “But Anthony went too far.”
Cameron nodded.
“The crash wasn't supposed to kill her.”
Luca crossed the room.
Marco caught his arm.
“Boss.”
Luca stopped inches from Cameron.
“You knew?”
“No.”
“When did you find out?”
“Yesterday.”
Luca stared.
Cameron didn't look away.
For once, he wasn't performing.
“My father is a monster.”
Nora felt something cold inside her.
“So were you.”
Cameron flinched.
She continued.
“You don't get to discover someone worse and become innocent.”
“I know.”
That surprised her.
Cameron looked at his hands.
“I kept telling myself I wasn't like him.”
Nora said nothing.
“I never hit you.”
“You didn't need to.”
“I know.”
“No, Cameron. I don't think you do.”
He looked at her.
“You made me afraid of doors closing. You made me hide money in shampoo bottles. You made me think every disagreement was evidence that I was unstable.”
His eyes lowered.
“You made me disappear from my own life.”
“I’m sorry.”
Nora felt tears burn.
“I don't forgive you.”
He nodded.
“I know.”
“And helping you doesn't mean I forgive you.”
“I know.”
“But I'll help you testify.”
Cameron looked up.
“Why?”
“Because stopping your father matters more than punishing you myself.”
Luca watched her with an expression she couldn't read.
They arranged the meeting with federal investigators.
But Richard moved first.
At 5:40 p.m., the power in the building failed.
Marco reached for his weapon.
Emergency lights flickered.
Then came gunfire.
“DOWN!”
Luca pulled Nora behind a desk.
Men entered from two stairwells.
Richard had sent professionals.
Cameron knew the building.
“This way!”
They moved through an archive room.
Nora ran beside Luca.
His injury slowed him.
“You shouldn't be here.”
“Not the time.”
They reached a service stairwell.
Cameron stopped.
“What?”
He stared at the lower landing.
“My father.”
Richard Price stood below with two armed men.
“Cameron.”
His voice was calm.
Cameron went pale.
“Dad.”
Richard looked at Nora.
“You've caused an extraordinary amount of trouble.”
Nora almost laughed.
“Funny. Cameron used to say the same thing.”
Richard's expression hardened.
“Give me the ledger.”
“No.”
Richard lifted his weapon.
Luca stepped in front of Nora.
Richard smiled.
“Moretti. Still sacrificing family for women?”
Luca went still.
Richard had chosen the wrong sentence.
“You killed Isabella.”
“No. Her husband did.”
“You arranged it.”
“I arranged fear.”
Richard shrugged.
“Anthony lacked discipline.”
Cameron's face changed.
“You told me it was an accident.”
Richard looked at his son.
“You've always been too emotional.”
Nora watched Cameron hear his own language thrown back at him.
Confused.
Emotional.
Unstable.
The same weapons he had used against her.
Now he finally understood where he had learned them.
Sirens sounded outside.
Richard's men looked toward the windows.
Marco smiled.
“Federal agents.”
Richard fired.
Chaos exploded.
Luca dragged Nora down.
Cameron tackled his father.
The weapon skidded across the floor.
Agents stormed both entrances.
Within seconds, Richard Price was face-down on concrete.
Cameron sat against the wall.
Blood ran from his forehead.
He looked at Nora.
She looked back.
Neither spoke.
There was nothing left to say.
Richard was arrested.
So were three officers, a city inspector, two union executives, and Anthony Russo.
The ledger confirmed everything.
Including Isabella.
Three weeks later, Luca stood at his sister's grave.
Nora waited several feet away.
He had asked her to come.
Not because he needed protection.
Because grief was easier when someone knew the whole story.
Luca touched the headstone.
“I should have listened.”
Nora approached.
“You were twenty-nine.”
“I was old enough.”
“Yes.”
He looked at her.
She didn't absolve him.
That was another reason he trusted her.
“You failed her,” Nora said softly. “Then you learned from it.”
His eyes filled.
“Does that matter?”
“It matters to every person you don't fail afterward.”
Luca looked at her.
“Nora—”
She took his hand.
“I'm not Isabella.”
“I know.”
“You don't have to save me to make what happened to her different.”
“I know.”
“And I don't want to be your redemption.”
His fingers tightened gently.
“You aren't.”
“What am I?”
Luca looked at their joined hands.
“Someone I love.”
Nora stopped breathing.
He immediately continued.
“You don't have to say anything.”
She laughed through sudden tears.
“You really are terrified of pressuring me.”
“Yes.”
“Good.”
She stepped closer.
“Keep being terrified.”
He smiled.
Then she kissed him.
This time there was no gunfire.
No Cameron.
No shattered glass.
No emergency.
Just two adults standing beneath autumn trees beside the grave of someone who should have been given the choices Nora finally had.
When they separated, Luca touched her cheek.
Nora whispered, “I love you too.”
And for one brief moment, the dangerous world around them became quiet.
But the story wasn't finished.
May you like
Because Richard Price had one final piece of insurance.
And from federal custody, he had just traded Luca Moretti's name for a deal.
