Chapter 11

Rebecca reacted harder than Dominic expected.
She did not defend Evelyn.
She collapsed under the realization of how many decisions she had made around promises nobody had ever formally offered.
“I thought Tyler mattered to you.”
“He does.”
“You never said—”
“I never said he would replace Caleb because I never thought in those terms.”
Rebecca covered her face.
Dominic continued more gently.
“Tyler doesn’t need to inherit my companies to matter to me.”
Rebecca looked up.
“I know that now.”
“No.”
Dominic shook his head.
“You need to know it without money attached.”
That became the central repair.
Tyler was removed from the adult financial conversations entirely.
No more jokes about being the future boss.
No more gifts tied to “representing the family.”
No more comparisons to Caleb.
Rebecca and Mark took over Tyler’s tuition themselves, even though it meant moving him to a less expensive school the following year.
Evelyn called it punishment.
Rebecca disagreed.
“It’s parenting.”
Evelyn accused Dominic of turning Rebecca against her.
Then Laura.
Then Andrew.
Then the accountant.
Everyone was apparently responsible except Evelyn.
Dominic finally met his mother in Andrew’s conference room.
No house.
No family dining table.
No audience.
“You knew Caleb was almost certainly mine.”
Evelyn looked at him.
“I had doubts.”
“You paid a research firm that told you biological doubt would not remove him from my estate.”
Silence.
“You told Rebecca Tyler might still become central.”
“I told her to protect her son’s future.”
“You used his future to control hers.”
Evelyn’s face hardened.
“That is ridiculous.”
“You made her believe leaving the family could cost Tyler something I never promised him.”
“I kept her close.”
There it was.
Dominic sat back.
Evelyn realized what she had admitted.
Dominic’s voice dropped.
“Yes.”
May you like
He nodded.
“That’s exactly what you did.”
