Chapter 3

I stood near the mahogany pillar at the edge of the room, holding a crystal glass of scotch untouched in my hand. Beside me stood Rocco, blending seamlessly into the background in a charcoal tuxedo, looking more like a Wall Street banker than my chief enforcer.

Across the room, Vivien was holding court near the center stage. She was surrounded by three financial journalists from the New York Financial Gazette and a pair of corrupt corporate board members who had been quietly taking bribes from her shell companies. She was laughing, tossing her blonde hair over her shoulder, basking in the absolute certainty that her grand scheme was about to reach its glorious climax.

At precisely eight o'clock, the master of ceremonies tapped his microphone, signaling for silence.

"Ladies and gentlemen, esteemed guests," the MC's voice boomed through the state-of-the-art sound system. "Please welcome to the stage a man who needs no introduction—the pillar of New York industry, the head of the Duca empire, Mr. Lorenzo Duca!"

Polite, thunderous applause erupted across the ballroom. Heads turned, and a path parted instantly through the crowd as I set my glass down and began walking slowly toward the marble steps leading up to the stage.

As I reached the podium, Vivien glided up beside me, her eyes shining with triumphant ambition. She slipped her hand into mine, leaning into the microphone with a practiced, radiant smile that looked angelic to the cameras broadcasting the event live across three major financial news networks.

"Thank you, everyone," Vivien spoke first, her voice ringing clear and melodious through the speakers. "Before Lorenzo shares his remarks tonight, I have a very special, deeply personal announcement to make on behalf of our family."

The crowd leaned in closer, cameras flashing furiously from the press box at the back of the room.

"Tonight, surrounded by the finest people in New York, I am deeply honored and thrilled to announce my official engagement to the love of my life, the brilliant man who has built an empire: Mr. Lorenzo Duca," Vivien declared, pausing for dramatic effect as applause began to swell. "And effective tomorrow morning, as part of our union, I will be stepping into a formal executive oversight role within Duca Enterprises to help guide our future growth!"

A murmur of approval rippled through the financial elites. The board members who had conspired with her exchanged smug, knowing glances.

Vivien turned to me, her eyes glistening with theatrical tears of joy. "Say something to our friends, darling," she whispered into the hot microphone, handing it over to me with a triumphant smirk.

I took the microphone. I looked out over the sea of hundreds of wealthy, powerful faces. Then I looked down at Vivien, whose smile remained fixed, though a tiny flicker of unease suddenly danced in her eyes.

"Thank you, Vivien," I said. My voice was deep, calm, and carried across the cavernous ballroom without a single tremor. "That was... quite a performance. Truly worthy of a Broadway stage."

Vivien’s smile twitched slightly. "Lorenzo? What are you—"

"Quiet, Veronica," I said gently.

The entire ballroom went dead silent. You could have heard a pin drop on the thick velvet carpet.

"My apologies," I continued, stepping slightly away from her toward the edge of the stage. "It appears I made a slight error in introduction. My fiancée’s legal name is not Vivien Vance. It is Veronica Sterling. Formerly of Boston."

A collective gasp sucked the air right out of the front rows. Vivien—Veronica—turned completely white, her jaw dropping open as she stumbled back a half-step.

"What... what are you talking about?" she stammered, her voice cracking for the first time. "Are you insane? Have you been drinking?"

"I don't drink when I'm hunting, Veronica," I replied smoothly. With my free hand, I clicked a remote button in my pocket.

Behind us, the massive eighty-foot LED projection screen that had been displaying the gala's corporate logo suddenly flickered. The screen went black for a second, and then a crisp, high-definition digital document appeared in glaring white letters across the entire room.

It was a certified forensic financial audit from Viper Holdings, detailing every single fraudulent wire transfer, every siphoned corporate account, and every offshore Cayman Islands deposit made over the last ninety days—all bearing Veronica Sterling’s digital signature and IP address.

Beside it, a second window opened on the screen: a recorded deposition from a retired Boston police detective detailing the suspicious death of Arthur Sterling three years prior, complete with bank records proving Veronica inherited millions right after his sudden stroke.

"That... that's a fake! Those are forgeries!" Veronica screamed, her voice losing all its melodic composure, turning into a shrill, hysterical shriek as she lunged toward the console to pull the plug.

Before she could take two steps, two federal marshals in dark suits stepped out from behind the velvet stage curtains, calmly blocking her path.

"Veronica Sterling, you are under arrest for wire fraud, corporate extortion, interstate money laundering, and the suspected murder of Arthur Sterling," the lead marshal stated coldly, snapping heavy steel handcuffs around her manicured wrists as flashbulbs exploded across the room like a war zone.

Veronica thrashed against the agents, her designer crimson gown tangling around her ankles as she was dragged screaming across the polished hardwood stage, kicking and cursing my name while the entire elite of New York watched her magnificent empire turn to ash in less than three minutes.

I stood calmly at the microphone, watching her get hauled away toward the service elevators.

When the double doors slammed shut behind her, cutting off her desperate shrieks, I looked out over the stunned, silent crowd.

"Enjoy the dessert, ladies and gentlemen," I said quietly, tapping the microphone off. "The party is over."
