Chapter 12

Rafael’s own conduct was reviewed separately.

Logan had shoved him.

Then swung.

Rafael slipped the punch and countered once.

The video supported an immediate defensive response.

No further attack followed.

Authorities treated that differently from what happened with Cassandra.

She reached toward Lucy.

Rafael pulled her hand away.

Two bodyguards were already closing in.

Lucy was behind him.

Then Rafael slapped Cassandra.

His attorney told him:

“The protective act was moving her away from Lucy.”

Rafael nodded.

“The slap?”

“Anger.”

“Yes.”

He did not build a defense around being a father.

He did not call it family honor.

He did not tell investigators Cassandra deserved whatever happened because she had thrown Lucy into the pool.

The legal consequence was limited compared with Cassandra’s conduct.

A misdemeanor-level resolution.

Medical reimbursement.

Anger-management counseling.

Rafael completed it.

Then continued seeing the therapist voluntarily.

Lucy eventually asked about it.

“Did police get mad because you hit Cassandra?”

“Yes.”

“But she pushed me in.”

“Yes.”

“So you saved me.”

“I saved you when I jumped in the pool.”

Lucy thought.

“And when you moved her hand.”

“Yes.”

“Then you hit her.”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

Rafael looked at his daughter.

“Because I was furious and wanted to hurt her.”

Lucy’s eyes widened.

“You’re not supposed to say that.”

“It’s still true.”

“Was it bad?”

“Yes.”

“But she was worse.”

Rafael paused.

“Her doing something worse doesn’t make my choice disappear.”

Lucy frowned.

Children preferred simple moral arithmetic.

Adults did too.

Rafael continued.

“If somebody is hurting you, I will stop them.”

“Always?”

“Yes.”

“But after?”

“After I stop.”

Lucy nodded.

Then pointed at him.

“You better.”

He almost smiled.

“Yes, ma’am.”

The Moretti household changed around that promise.

No fiancée, associate, cousin, or senior family member disciplined Lucy without explicit authority.

Meals could never be withheld as punishment.

No confinement.

No locked rooms.

No threatening access to toys or comfort objects.

Staff received an outside reporting line independent of Rafael’s household hierarchy.

Grace asked:

“What if the person giving the order is your future wife?”

Rafael answered:

“Especially then.”

May you like

The estate had spent too many years treating personal closeness like delegated power.

Cassandra had shown what happened when nobody forced the two apart.
