Chapter 3 - Emma Learned Her Mother Had Been Alive for Sixteen Years—But Rebecca Whitmore’s Return Exposed Why Cedar Hollow’s Alpha Bloodline Had Nearly Been DestroyedEmma could not speak.

The woman on the phone cried.

“Emma?”

“My mother is dead.”

“I know what they told you.”

Emma’s hand tightened.

“Tell me something only she would know.”

Silence.

Then:

“You wore yellow rain boots to breakfast the last morning we saw you. I told you it wasn’t raining. You hid them in your school backpack and changed shoes on the bus.”

Emma stopped breathing.

Nobody knew that.

Not Nathaniel.

Not Daniel.

Not Grant.

“Mom?”

Rebecca Whitmore sobbed.

Emma slid to the floor.

For sixteen years she had imagined a grave.

There had never been one.

They spoke for eleven minutes.

Rebecca refused to reveal her location.

“Not yet.”

“Why?”

“Because someone is still watching.”

“Grant has been suspended.”

“Grant isn’t the one I’m afraid of.”

Emma froze.

“Who?”

“Celeste Vane.”

Nathaniel’s proposed mate.

Rebecca explained.

The Vane family had funded the original campaign against Cedar Hollow.

Not for timber.

For blood.

Generations earlier, Cedar Hollow wolves possessed an unusual Alpha command.

Not stronger physically.

Different.

They could interrupt dominance commands from other Alphas.

Emma understood what she had done to Grant.

A bloodline capable of neutralizing coercive Alpha power threatened the entire territorial hierarchy.

Richard Holloway and Silas Vane decided Cedar Hollow could not remain independent.

Land theft was only part of the plan.

They wanted the bloodline absorbed or extinguished.

Thomas and Rebecca discovered it.

They staged their deaths before someone else could make them real.

“Why leave me?” Emma whispered.

Rebecca cried.

“We didn’t plan to.”

“What happened?”

“The people helping us escape betrayed us.”

Thomas was captured.

Rebecca escaped.

She believed Emma would be safer if everyone thought the Whitmore line ended with two dead parents and an insignificant child.

“So you watched me grow up without you?”

“No.”

That answer hurt differently.

“I stayed away completely.”

Emma closed her eyes.

“Why?”

“Because if I had watched, I would have come back.”

Emma cried silently.

“That doesn’t make it better.”

“I know.”

“Dad?”

Rebecca went quiet.

“I don’t know.”

Emma’s heart broke again.

“Is he alive?”

“I don’t know.”

The following morning Emma contacted Nathaniel.

He arrived within an hour.

She told him everything.

He listened.

Then said, “Celeste’s family controls Northstar.”

Emma stared.

“The mercenaries?”

“Yes.”

Nathaniel looked furious with himself.

“I should have connected it.”

“You were considering marrying her.”

“Politically.”

“That sentence is not helping.”

“Right.”

Nathaniel called Marcus.

Within hours they discovered Northstar Response Group belonged through shell companies to Vane Holdings.

Celeste had access to every operation.

Including the attack on Nathaniel’s penthouse.

“She wanted me dead?” Emma asked.

Nathaniel shook his head.

“No.”

“How do you know?”

“Silver ammunition.”

“So?”

“It was diluted.”

Marcus understood first.

“They wanted her frightened.”

Nathaniel nodded.

“Driven back to Blackridge. Or toward a public display of power.”

Emma’s skin went cold.

“Why?”

“To expose what you are.”

A knock sounded.

Daniel entered.

Nathaniel’s face hardened.

Emma had invited him.

Daniel brought records from Grant’s private office.

“My father kept these separately.”

One document showed payments to Vane Holdings.

Another contained correspondence.

Emma read.

HER AWAKENING MUST OCCUR BEFORE THE SUCCESSION VOTE.

“What succession vote?”

Nathaniel answered.

“The Northern Council.”

Emma looked up.

Nathaniel explained that seven major territories voted every twenty years to select a regional High Alpha.

Nathaniel was favored by several councils.

Celeste’s marriage to him would unite Vane influence with Pinehaven.

But Emma’s awakened Cedar Hollow blood gave her something unprecedented.

The ability to challenge the legitimacy of coercive Alpha rule.

Daniel looked sick.

“My father wasn’t stealing her land only for money.”

“No,” Emma said.

“He was keeping Cedar Hollow powerless.”

They found Rebecca three days later.

She lived under another name in Montana.

Emma met her at a small farmhouse.

For a long time, mother and daughter simply stared.

Rebecca had gray in her hair.

Lines around her eyes.

Emma hated those lines because she had missed the years that created them.

Then Rebecca opened her arms.

Emma walked into them.

She was eight again.

And thirty.

Angry.

Relieved.

Loved.

Abandoned.

All at once.

Later Rebecca gave Emma a box.

Inside was Thomas’s wedding ring.

“Where did you get this?”

Rebecca looked down.

“It arrived twelve years ago.”

“With what?”

“One note.”

Emma unfolded the faded paper.

KEEP EMMA ORDINARY.

Thomas was alive twelve years after the accident.

Maybe alive now.

The search shifted.

Emma, Nathaniel, Daniel and Marcus followed old Northstar payments.

One facility appeared repeatedly.

A decommissioned mining clinic in northern Montana.

They went.

Nathaniel wanted Emma behind security.

Then stopped himself.

“You decide.”

She noticed.

“I’m going.”

“Okay.”

The clinic appeared abandoned.

Inside they found medical rooms.

Records.

Blood samples.

Genetic charts.

Cedar Hollow names.

Emma felt sick.

The Vane family had been studying Alpha inheritance for decades.

Trying to identify how command resistance passed genetically.

Then Emma found one living patient.

Room 14.

Thomas Whitmore lay inside.

Older.

Thin.

Alive.

“Dad?”

His eyes opened.

He stared.

Then whispered:

“Rain boots.”

Emma broke.

She held him.

Thomas had been imprisoned intermittently for sixteen years.

Moved whenever investigators came close.

Forced to decode old Cedar Hollow records.

His captors wanted to identify descendants carrying active command blood.

Celeste had personally visited him.

“She isn’t trying to kill you,” Thomas warned.

“What does she want?”

“To mate you into the Vane line.”

Emma recoiled.

Nathaniel’s eyes turned lethal.

Thomas continued.

“Your blood plus theirs would give them control of the only line capable of resisting them.”

Emma understood.

Celeste never wanted Nathaniel.

Nathaniel was the respectable route to regional power.

Emma was the permanent one.

Sirens sounded outside.

Marcus entered.

“We have company.”

Northstar vehicles surrounded the clinic.

Celeste Vane walked through the front doors.

Elegant.

Calm.

Unarmed.

“Emma.”

Nathaniel moved forward.

Emma stopped him.

“This is mine.”

Celeste smiled.

“Good.”

Emma stepped into the corridor.

“You imprisoned my father.”

“My father did.”

“You continued it.”

“Yes.”

No denial.

“Why?”

“Because packs are dying.”

Emma frowned.

Celeste explained.

Generations of political mating had weakened genetic diversity.

Active wolves were becoming rarer.

Cedar Hollow’s blood might reverse it.

“You could have asked.”

Celeste almost laughed.

“Would your family have agreed?”

“No.”

“Exactly.”

Emma stared.

“So you decided consent was inefficient.”

Nathaniel looked away.

The phrase struck him too.

Celeste extended her hand.

“Come with me voluntarily. Your parents go free. Cedar Hollow remains yours.”

“And if I refuse?”

“Pinehaven loses its trade routes. Blackridge collapses financially. Your cooperative fails.”

Emma smiled faintly.

Celeste frowned.

“What?”

“You built your entire plan on everyone needing one powerful person.”

“That is how power works.”

“No.”

Emma felt her wolf rise.

“That is how fear works.”

She stepped forward.

Northstar men shifted.

Celeste released an Alpha command.

“Kneel.”

The building seemed to shake with it.

Daniel dropped to one knee.

Several guards did too.

Nathaniel staggered.

Emma remained standing.

Celeste’s eyes widened.

Emma spoke.

“Stand.”

Daniel rose.

Nathaniel straightened.

Northstar guards looked terrified.

Emma’s command had not forced them.

It had freed them.

That was the difference.

Celeste tried again.

Emma broke it again.

One by one, Northstar men lowered their weapons.

Not because Emma commanded obedience.

Because Celeste could no longer compel it.

Marcus smiled.

“That’s new.”

Federal vehicles arrived.

Nathaniel had contacted authorities before they entered.

Celeste looked betrayed.

“You brought humans into pack business?”

Emma stared at her.

“You kidnapped people for sixteen years. This stopped being ‘pack business’ a long time ago.”

Celeste was arrested.

Thomas was carried outside.

Rebecca ran toward him.

For the first time in sixteen years, Emma saw her parents together.

Older.

Broken.

Alive.

Nathaniel stood beside Emma.

He did not touch her.

She looked at him.

“You called federal authorities?”

“Yes.”

“Without telling me?”

His expression changed.

Then he winced.

“I did.”

Emma raised an eyebrow.

Nathaniel sighed.

“I am still learning.”

“Yes.”

“I’m sorry.”

Emma looked toward her parents.

Then back at him.

“We’re not finished talking.”

“I know.”

“But you did the right thing.”

His shoulders relaxed slightly.

Emma almost smiled.

Then Daniel approached.

He had been unusually quiet.

“I found something else.”

Emma looked at him.

Daniel handed her a document.

It was a birth record.

Her birth record.

Except the father’s name was not Thomas Whitmore.

Emma stared.

“That’s wrong.”

Thomas, overhearing, went pale.

Rebecca closed her eyes.

Emma looked between them.

“Mom?”

Rebecca whispered, “Thomas is your father in every way that matters.”

Emma’s blood turned cold.

“Who is my biological father?”

Nobody answered.

Nathaniel read the document.

His expression changed.

Emma took it back.

At the bottom was a name.

ADRIAN MERCER.

She looked at Nathaniel.

His face had gone completely white.

“Nathaniel?”

He stepped backward.

Adrian Mercer was his father.

And suddenly the strange pull between them was no longer romantic mystery.

May you like

It was something far more dangerous.

Something that could destroy everything they thought they understood.
