Chapter 2 - The Video of My Humiliation Went Viral Overnight—And the Billionaire’s Son Discovered That His Father Had Been Hiding a Dangerous Secret

I woke the next morning to the sound of my phone vibrating.

Again.

And again.

And again.

For a moment, I forgot what had happened.

Then I touched my head.

My fingers met uneven hair.

Bare skin.

A painful patch near my temple.

And everything came back.

The clippers.

The laughter.

The marble floor.

Preston's champagne glass.

I sat up too quickly.

My stomach twisted.

Dominic was sitting beside the bed.

He had changed into a gray sweater.

His hair was slightly disheveled.

He looked as though he hadn't slept.

"Hey," he said softly.

I stared at him.

"How long have you been awake?"

He smiled faintly.

"Long enough to make coffee."

I looked toward the bedside table.

A cup waited there.

Beside it sat a plate of toast.

I swallowed.

"Dom."

He leaned closer.

"How are you feeling?"

I touched my scalp.

"Like someone took a lawn mower to my head."

His expression tightened.

I tried to smile.

It didn't work.

He took my hand.

"A doctor is coming this morning."

I nodded.

"Okay."

He hesitated.

"There's something else."

My stomach tightened.

"What?"

He picked up my phone.

The screen was filled with notifications.

Messages.

Missed calls.

Social media alerts.

I stared.

"What happened?"

Dominic took a breath.

"The video was posted."

I felt cold.

"What video?"

He looked at me.

"The one from the restaurant."

For a moment, I couldn't breathe.

I reached for the phone.

He hesitated.

"Elena—"

"Give it to me."

He handed it over.

The first video appeared immediately.

A short clip.

Me kneeling on the marble floor.

My hair scattered around me.

Preston laughing.

One of his friends holding the clippers.

The caption read:

SPOILED RICH KIDS SHAVE WAITRESS'S HEAD AT CHICAGO LUXURY RESTAURANT.

My stomach twisted.

I pressed play.

I heard my own voice.

"Please don't touch me."

Then laughter.

The buzzing clippers.

Someone shouting, "Hold still!"

I stopped the video.

My hands were shaking.

Dominic reached toward me.

I pulled away.

Not because I didn't want him.

Because suddenly I couldn't bear to be touched.

He stopped immediately.

"Okay."

I looked at him.

"How many people have seen it?"

He hesitated.

"More than two million."

I stared at him.

Two million.

Two million strangers had watched the worst moment of my life.

Some were angry.

Some were sympathetic.

Some were making jokes.

I scrolled.

One comment said Preston should be arrested.

Another asked why nobody intervened.

Another said I was probably exaggerating.

Then I saw a comment that made my stomach drop.

She probably deserved it.

I threw the phone onto the bed.

Dominic moved closer.

"Elena."

I shook my head.

"I can't."

He nodded.

"Then don't."

I covered my face.

For a moment, I couldn't speak.

Then I whispered, "They took something from me."

Dominic's expression changed.

I continued.

"It wasn't just my hair."

My voice broke.

"It was the way everyone stood there."

He looked at me.

"Nobody helped."

I nodded.

"Nobody."

He reached for my hand.

This time, I let him take it.

I stared at him.

"I thought if I worked hard and treated people well, they'd treat me like a person."

Dominic's eyes filled.

I continued.

"But they didn't even see me."

He shook his head.

"They were wrong."

I looked away.

"I know."

But knowing didn't make it hurt less.

Later that morning, Dr. Rebecca Collins examined my scalp and arm.

She documented the injuries.

Recommended treatment for the irritated skin.

And asked several questions about the incident.

I answered as calmly as I could.

When she finished, she looked at me.

"Elena, what happened to you was an assault."

I swallowed.

"I know."

She nodded.

"And it's understandable if you feel shaken afterward."

I looked down.

She continued.

"You don't have to decide everything today."

I nodded.

For the first time since the restaurant, someone had said something that made me feel less trapped.

I didn't have to decide everything.

Not today.

Not while my scalp still burned.

Not while strangers were sharing my humiliation.

After the doctor left, Dominic's attorney arrived.

Her name was Margaret Shaw.

She was fifty-one, sharp-eyed, and known for taking apart powerful men in court without ever raising her voice.

She sat across from me in the library.

"Elena."

I nodded.

"Margaret."

She looked at my hair.

Her expression softened.

"I'm sorry."

I swallowed.

"Thank you."

She opened a folder.

"We have several options."

I leaned forward.

"Tell me."

She explained that the incident could support criminal complaints and civil claims.

The recordings would be important.

So would witness statements.

Medical documentation.

And the restaurant's security footage.

I listened carefully.

Then asked, "What about Dennis?"

Margaret nodded.

"The restaurant's conduct will be examined too."

I looked down.

"He knew they were harassing Mia."

Margaret paused.

"Who is Mia?"

"Another waitress."

I took a breath.

"She's twenty-two. She started three months ago."

I looked at Dominic.

"Preston grabbed her wrist earlier that night."

His expression hardened.

I continued.

"She told Dennis."

Margaret wrote something down.

"What did he do?"

"Nothing."

I looked away.

"He told her to stay away from the table."

Margaret nodded.

"Would Mia be willing to speak?"

"I don't know."

She closed the folder.

"We'll ask through appropriate channels."

I nodded.

Then she looked at me.

"Elena, I want to be clear about something."

I looked up.

"This is your case."

I frowned.

She continued.

"Dominic can support you. I can advise you. But the decisions about your civil claims belong to you."

I looked at Dominic.

He nodded.

"She's right."

For a moment, I felt something loosen inside me.

After everything that had happened, I needed to know my voice still mattered.

I took a breath.

"Then I want to move forward."

Margaret nodded.

"All right."

I looked at her.

"And I want the other employees protected."

She smiled faintly.

"We'll discuss how to address that."

That afternoon, Preston Hale's father called Dominic.

His name was Charles Hale.

A billionaire developer with luxury towers across Chicago and major city contracts.

Dominic put the call on speaker.

"Vale."

Charles sounded strained.

"Dominic, I just heard about what happened."

Dominic said nothing.

Charles continued.

"My son behaved disgracefully."

I stared at the phone.

Then Charles said, "I'd like to make this right."

Dominic looked at me.

I shook my head.

He nodded.

"Then speak to my wife."

Silence.

Charles cleared his throat.

"Mrs. Vale?"

I leaned forward.

"Yes."

"I'm deeply sorry."

I waited.

He continued.

"Preston has always been impulsive, but this was unacceptable."

I felt anger rise.

"Impulsive?"

Charles hesitated.

I continued.

"He held me down while his friends shaved my head."

Silence.

"That's not impulsive."

Charles swallowed.

"You're right."

I looked at Dominic.

Then back at the phone.

"What do you want, Mr. Hale?"

He hesitated.

Then said, "I'd like to discuss a private settlement."

I stared at him.

"How private?"

A pause.

"Confidential."

I laughed bitterly.

"Of course."

Charles continued.

"We can compensate you generously."

I felt cold.

"How much?"

He hesitated.

Then said, "One million dollars."

I stared at the phone.

Dominic's expression didn't change.

Charles continued.

"In exchange, we'd ask that you refrain from making additional public statements."

I took a breath.

"Mr. Hale."

"Yes?"

"Your son filmed me being assaulted."

Silence.

"He laughed while I begged him to stop."

Charles said nothing.

"And now you want to pay me to disappear."

His voice tightened.

"That's not what I'm saying."

I shook my head.

"Then what are you saying?"

He hesitated.

I continued.

"I don't want your money."

Charles exhaled.

"Mrs. Vale—"

"I want accountability."

Silence.

Then I added, "And I want the people who work at that restaurant to know they don't have to tolerate abuse because someone has a wealthy father."

Charles didn't answer.

I looked at Dominic.

He gave a small nod.

I ended the call.

For a moment, the room was silent.

Then Margaret smiled.

"Well."

I looked at her.

"What?"

She leaned back.

"That was clear."

I laughed.

For the first time since the restaurant, I laughed.

It was brief.

But it felt good.

That evening, Mia called me.

Her voice shook.

"Elena?"

"Mia."

She began crying.

"I'm so sorry."

I closed my eyes.

"Mia, you didn't do this."

She sniffed.

"I should have helped."

I swallowed.

"You were scared."

She cried harder.

I continued.

"I was scared too."

For a moment, neither of us spoke.

Then she whispered, "Dennis told us not to say anything."

My stomach tightened.

"What?"

She took a breath.

"He said if we talked to reporters, we'd lose our jobs."

I felt cold.

I looked at Margaret, who was sitting nearby.

She leaned forward.

I asked, "Did he say that today?"

Mia nodded, then remembered we were on the phone.

"Yes."

I took a breath.

"Mia, would you be willing to speak with an attorney?"

She hesitated.

"Will I lose my job?"

I looked at Margaret.

She shook her head slightly, reminding me not to promise something I couldn't control.

I answered carefully.

"I can't promise what Dennis will do. But you deserve independent advice before you decide."

Mia was quiet.

Then she whispered, "Okay."

I smiled sadly.

"Good."

After the call, Margaret looked at me.

"This may be bigger than one incident."

I nodded.

"I know."

But I didn't yet understand how much bigger.

The next morning, Dominic received a message from his chief financial officer.

He read it.

His expression changed.

"What?" I asked.

He looked at me.

"Charles Hale's companies are trying to refinance several major projects."

I frowned.

"So?"

Dominic hesitated.

"One of those projects involves land previously owned by my family."

My stomach tightened.

"Which land?"

He looked at me.

"The old South Branch freight terminal."

I stared at him.

I knew that property.

Dominic had spent years trying to recover it after a complicated sale involving his late father.

I looked at him.

"Why does that matter?"

He handed me the report.

I scanned it.

Then stopped.

A familiar name appeared.

MONARCH HOSPITALITY HOLDINGS.

I looked up.

"The restaurant?"

Dominic nodded.

I stared at him.

"What does the Monarch Room have to do with the freight terminal?"

He looked toward the window.

"That's what I intend to find out."

I looked down at the report again.

The same company connected to the restaurant where I'd been assaulted was involved in a development project tied to Dominic's family history.

And Charles Hale was at the center of it.

For the first time, I wondered whether Preston's cruelty had exposed more than his own arrogance.

Maybe the Hale family had been hiding something for years.

May you like

Something they desperately wanted to keep buried.

And maybe the video that had humiliated me was about to become the first piece of evidence in a much larger story.
