Chapter 3 - The Santa Fe Showdown, the Traitor’s Fall, and the Underworld King’s Ultimate Surrender to the Laundry SupervisorThe sun was just beginning to spill a brilliant wash of orange and gold across the stark desert landscape as Greco’s private jet touched down on a private tarmac outside Santa Fe.

May be an image of aircraft

The air was crisp, smelling of dry pine and red earth, a sharp contrast to the industrial bleach and cold cement of Denver.

As the aircraft stairs lowered, the desert wind whipped my hair across my face. I wore Renato’s oversized cashmere coat over my gray work tunic, my hands shoved deep into the pockets, standing three paces behind Renato as he descended into the blinding morning light.

Waiting near a row of black Escalades was a tall, silver-haired man in a white linen suit—Julian Vance, the ruthless head of the Pacific freight division and the man Renato’s intelligence had identified as the mastermind behind the frame-up.

Vance stepped forward with a slick, victorious smile, flanked by two armed bodyguards and a local federal compliance officer holding a clipboard.

“Renato!” Vance called out, spreading his arms wide. “I didn't expect you to fly all the way to New Mexico on such short notice. And... oh. Who is this?”

Vance’s gaze slid over me, a mask of feigned surprise crossing his features as he spotted the exhausted laundry supervisor standing beside the most feared logistics boss in the country.

“Is this your new traveling companion, Greco?” Vance sneered, looking toward the compliance officer. “Because my office received an anonymous tip this morning regarding illegal contraband transport and unregistered personnel bypasses on your private fleet. I believe an immediate inspection is warranted.”

The compliance officer stepped forward, raising his badge. “Mr. Greco, by order of federal transport security, I must inspect this aircraft and question the unregistered civilian accompanying you.”

The trap had sprung, exactly as Vance had planned. The federal officer was in his pocket, the cameras were rolling from a parked news van hidden near the perimeter fence, and the frame-up was designed to culminate in a public, humiliating detention.

Renato didn't flinch. He didn't raise his voice. He stood with his hands resting casually in his pockets, his posture radiating absolute, untouchable supremacy.

“Inspect whatever you like, Julian,” Renato said smoothly, stepping aside. “Though I suspect your compliance officer will find the manifest entirely legitimate. Especially once he reviews the supplemental data my security team transmitted to the federal prosecutor ten minutes ago.”

Vance’s victorious smile faltered for a fraction of a second. “What data?”

Marcus, the security chief, stepped out of the aircraft cabin holding a heavy secure tablet. He walked directly up to the compliance officer and handed him the device.

“Here is the unedited CCTV footage from the Denver terminal service corridor at 4:50 a.m.,” Marcus stated clearly. “It clearly shows a dock worker employed by Julian Vance’s Pacific division forcing Miss Holt down the restricted ramp under duress. Furthermore, we have bank records proving Vance’s shell company wired twenty thousand dollars to Miss Holt’s cousin this morning to ensure her compliance.”

The color drained from Julian Vance’s face so fast he looked as though he had been hit by a truck. He spun around to glare at his compliance officer, but the man was already staring at the tablet in horror, backing away slowly.

“This... this is a forgery!” Vance stammered, his voice cracking as panic set in. “Greco planted this! Arrest him!”

“You brought a federal compliance officer to a private airstrip to witness your own conspiracy, Julian,” Renato stated, his voice dropping into a register of absolute, freezing death. “Your shipping licenses across three states are currently being revoked under emergency racketeering protocols. You are finished.”

Before Vance’s bodyguards could reach for their sidearms, four local state troopers—operating under a direct federal warrant secured by Renato’s legal team twenty minutes prior—surrounded the Escalades, slamming Vance and his men against the metal doors and slapping steel handcuffs onto their wrists.

The Santa Fe showdown was over before it truly began.

Within an hour, the tarmac had cleared. The news van had sped away, its footage useless now that the truth had been brought to light.

Renato and I stood near the edge of the tarmac, watching the desert wind stir the red dust. The private jet idled softly behind us, fueled and ready for the return flight to Denver—or anywhere else I chose to go.

Renato turned his head, looking down at me with an intense, unyielding devotion that completely overwhelmed the lingering exhaustion in my bones.

“Your cousin’s apartment lease has been terminated, and her bank accounts frozen pending an investigation for wire fraud,” Renato informed me quietly. “She will face legal consequences for selling your name. But you... you are entirely free, Marin.”

I looked down at the dark cashmere coat wrapped around my shoulders, feeling the profound, staggering reality of my new existence. For thirty-one years, I had been the floor for everyone else, letting my life dissolve into laundry detergent and unpaid bills.

Now, a syndicate kingpin had turned his entire empire upside down just to ensure I wasn't stepped on.

“And what happens now?” I asked softly. “Do I go back to the airport hotel?”

A rare, breathtaking smile curved Renato’s lips. He reached out, his warm, calloused fingers gently catching my chin, tilting my face upward toward the New Mexico sun.

“Only if you want to resign in person,” Renato murmured, his voice dropping into a husky, hypnotic register. “Otherwise... I have an estate in the mountains outside Denver that requires a general manager who cannot be bought, cannot be fooled, and knows how to stand her ground against wolves.”

I looked up into his dark, brilliant eyes, feeling a spark of life and adventure I hadn't felt since I last picked up my camera four years ago.

I let out a soft, brilliant laugh, placing my hand over his warm palm.

“Does the job come with airline privileges?” I teased.

Renato pulled me gently against his solid chest, wrapping his strong arms securely around my waist. “It comes with a private jet, Marin. You can fly to any adobe chapel in the world whenever you want.”

May you like

He captured my lips in a deep, fierce, undeniable kiss that sealed our fate beneath the desert sky.

The wrong flight had led me straight into the arms of the most dangerous man in Colorado, but as Renato held me against his heart, I knew I would never disappear again.
