Chapter 3 - The Boardroom Ambush, the Federal Investigation, and the Fall of the House of CarusoThe morning sun broke over the Manhattan skyline in a brilliant splash of amber and gold, casting long shadows across the sleek glass-and-steel boardroom on the forty-fifth floor of Caruso Design Group.

By 8:30 AM, the emergency board of directors meeting had already been called.

The atmosphere in the room was thick enough to cut with a knife. Five elderly, impeccably tailored board members sat around the massive mahogany conference table, their expressions a mixture of profound shock, outrage, and sheer terror. Tablets lay scattered across the table, displaying the unredacted documents, stolen design blueprints, bank statements, and intellectual property theft notices I had blasted out to their private emails at precisely 6:00 AM.

At the head of the table stood Dominic Caruso.

He looked like a man who hadn't slept a single second. His eyes were bloodshot, his tailored suit rumpled, and his hands visibly trembling as he gripped the edge of the mahogany table for balance. Rumors of an impending SEC investigation and a massive copyright infringement lawsuit had already leaked to Wall Street, causing Caruso Design Group stock to plummet by thirty-four percent in pre-market trading alone.

"This is a malicious, fabricated smear campaign!" Dominic shouted, his voice cracking with desperation as he glared at his horrified investors. "My wife—who is currently undergoing a severe mental health crisis—stole confidential files and doctored them to ruin my reputation! You cannot trust a single word of these fraudulent documents!"

"Really, Dominic?" a cold, authoritative voice echoed from the heavy oak double doors at the back of the boardroom.

Every head snapped around.

I walked into the boardroom, dressed in a sharp, tailored ivory pantsuit that commanded absolute attention. My hair was pulled back into a sleek, flawless ponytail, and a touch of professional makeup carefully concealed the faint yellowish remnants of the bruise on my cheek. Behind me walked two federal marshals in dark suits and a senior partner from Covington & Burling—one of the most ruthless intellectual property law firms in the country.

"Nora!" Dominic gasped, his face twisting into a mask of pure fury. He lunged around the table toward me, his hands clawing at the air. "You psychotic bitch! What are you doing here?! Security! Get her out of this building right now!"

Neither of the security guards stationed by the door moved an inch. They had already read the federal injunctions served thirty minutes prior.

The senior partner from Covington & Burling stepped smoothly in front of me, flashing a leather badge and a thick stack of federal paperwork.

"Mr. Dominic Caruso," the attorney announced crisply, his voice ringing clearly across the silent boardroom. "You are formally served with a federal injunction for intellectual property theft, corporate fraud, tax evasion, and breach of fiduciary contract filed on behalf of Mrs. Eleanor Vance-Caruso, sole legal owner and creator of the Caruso Design Group foundational portfolio."

Murmurs of absolute shock erupted among the board members. One elderly investor dropped his pen, staring open-mouthed at Dominic.

"It's a lie!" Dominic screamed, slamming his fists down onto the mahogany table so hard the water carafes rattled. "She's my wife! She signed everything over to me during our marriage! She has no legal standing!"

"Actually, Mr. Caruso, she does," I stepped forward, my heels clicking sharply against the hardwood floor as I approached the head of the table. I pulled a pristine copy of the original 2021 IP agreement from my leather briefcase and laid it gently right in front of the lead investor. "As the contract clearly outlines—signed by your own hand and notarized by a federal officer—any commercial exploitation of my designs without my explicit, written consent constitutes immediate corporate forfeiture of all assets back to me."

I turned my gaze slowly to Dominic, whose eyes were wide with a terrifying realization.

"You built an entire empire on my stolen sweat, Dominic," I said softly, my voice carrying a quiet, devastating power that commanded the entire room. "You thought you could lock me in a nursery, parade your mistress in my stolen dresses, and slap me across the face when I dared to speak up. You drastically underestimated the woman who built you."

"Mr. Caruso," one of the senior board members spoke up, his voice dripping with ice. "If these federal allegations are true—and based on the wire transfer records we're looking at right now, they are—you haven't just ruined the company. You've committed grand larceny against your own shareholders."

"Wait! Gentlemen, please! We can fix this!" Dominic begged, his voice cracking as he stumbled backward, clutching at his chest like a drowning man. "We can negotiate! Nora, please... think of Eli! Don't do this to our family!"

"Don't you ever dare say our son's name," I snapped, the ice in my voice cutting deeper than any knife. "Eli is safe with me, far away from a toxic, abusive father who thinks women are disposable property."

Just then, the boardroom doors swung open again.

Two federal agents entered, accompanied by local precinct detectives, holding a pair of gleaming steel handcuffs.

"Dominic Caruso," the lead detective announced, stepping up beside him. "You are under arrest for corporate embezzlement, wire fraud, and falsification of federal financial records based on evidence provided by the SEC and private counsel."

Dominic froze. He looked around the boardroom, desperately searching for a single friendly face, an ally, a lifeline. But every single investor had turned their chairs away from him in utter disgust. His multi-million-dollar empire, built on lies, stolen art, and cruelty, was collapsing into ash right before his eyes.

As the cold steel cuffs snapped tightly around his wrists, Dominic looked at me one last time, his eyes hollow, defeated, and weeping with absolute despair.

I didn't blink. I didn't smile. I simply turned my back on him, walked over to the floor-to-ceiling windows, and looked out over the bright, beautiful Manhattan morning.
