Chapter 5 - The Sunrise Over the Willamette and the True BeginningSix months later, the spring morning air in Portland was crisp, fragrant, and bursting with the vibrant energy of renewal.

I stood on the observation deck of the newly restructured Pacific Northwest Foundation headquarters, holding a warm cup of organic green tea and watching the golden morning sun rise majestically over the Willamette River. The water shimmered like molten gold; the Morrison Bridge stretched clean and bright against the amber sky; and the city below hummed with steady, purposeful life.

Following Daniel’s indictment and subsequent guilty plea to federal wire fraud—resulting in a five-year prison sentence in Sheridan federal correctional facility—the board of directors had unanimously voted to appoint me as the permanent Executive Director of the Foundation. Under my leadership, we had audited every fiscal line, redirected millions of dollars into genuine community outreach programs, and established an uncompromising culture of transparency, integrity, and ethical governance.

My independent consulting firm was thriving, my relationships with loyal friends and colleagues had deepened into an unbreakable sisterhood of mutual support, and my heart—once fractured by betrayal—had healed into something infinitely stronger and wiser than before.

The glass door behind me slid open softly.

Marcus stepped out onto the terrace, holding a stack of morning grant proposals and offering a warm, respectful smile. “Good morning, Madam Director. The state delegation is arriving for the community arts panel in twenty minutes.”

I smiled, taking a final sip of my tea and setting the ceramic mug down on the stone railing. “Thank you, Marcus. I’ll be right inside.”

As he turned back toward the boardroom, I looked out across the endless, beautiful horizon of the city where my life had shattered, only to be rebuilt from the foundation up. The betrayed wife who had walked away from Table 18 at Bellamy House with a broken heart was gone forever. I was no longer hiding in anyone's shadow, no longer anchored to a man’s deceit, and no longer waiting for permission to shine.

I was the architect of my own destiny, the queen of my own empire, and the author of a brand-new story written entirely in my own hand.
