Chapter 3 - THE PREGNANT WIDOW HANDED THE MAFIA BOSS HER HUSBAND'S SECRET MEMORY CARD—AND THE RECORDING INSIDE REVEALED WHY CHICAGO'S RICHEST FAMILY WANTED HER BABY DEAD

The memory card was smaller than Matthew's thumbnail.
Yet when Mia placed it on the hospital table, he understood that it might contain enough evidence to destroy everything he had built.
He stared at it.
"Where did you get this?"
Mia looked at him.
"Luca."
Matthew swallowed.
"When?"
"The night before he died."
He looked up.
"Why didn't you tell me?"
Mia's eyes filled.
"Because he told me not to trust anyone."
Matthew looked down.
The words hurt.
But he could not blame her.
Luca had died.
Mia had been left alone.
And Matthew's world had always been full of men who smiled while hiding knives.
He took a breath.
"What do you want me to do?"
Mia studied him.
"I want to know what happened to my husband."
Matthew nodded.
"Then we'll find out."
She looked at him.
"Not by hurting people."
He hesitated.
Then nodded.
"By finding evidence."
Mia relaxed slightly.
For the first time, she allowed herself to believe he might be listening.
***
Vincent brought a secure laptop to the hospital.
Rocco stood outside the door.
Matthew inserted the memory card.
A folder appeared.
LUCA_ROSSI_PRIVATE.
Inside were financial records, photographs, and audio files.
Matthew opened the first recording.
Luca's voice filled the room.
"If you're hearing this, something happened to me."
Mia covered her mouth.
Matthew froze.
He had not heard his friend's voice in five months.
Luca continued.
"I found evidence that Kensington Global Shipping has been laundering money through several port contracts."
Matthew's jaw tightened.
The recording continued.
"But that's not the worst part."
A pause.
Then:
"Someone inside Castille Holdings has been helping them."
Matthew went still.
Vincent looked up.
Mia stared at the screen.
Luca's voice continued.
"I don't know how high it goes. But I found payments to North Harbor Consulting. The money moves through legitimate shipping invoices, then disappears into accounts controlled by Richard Kensington."
Matthew looked toward Vincent.
"North Harbor."
Vincent nodded.
"The same company that paid Mercer."
Mia's hands trembled.
The recording continued.
"I've also found evidence that someone is using medical charities to hide transfers."
Matthew frowned.
"Medical charities?"
Luca's voice hardened.
"Children's hospitals. Emergency funds. Families who can't afford treatment."
Mia began crying.
Luca had spent years volunteering at a legal clinic for low-income families.
He had helped parents fight insurance denials.
He had cared about people who never appeared in newspaper society pages.
And someone had used those families to hide stolen money.
The recording continued.
"I told Matthew about the shipping discrepancies. He said he'd look into them."
Matthew closed his eyes.
He remembered.
Luca had called him three days before the crash.
He had sounded worried.
Matthew had been in the middle of a business meeting.
He had promised to call back.
He never did.
The recording continued.
"If Matthew is involved, I don't want to believe it."
Mia looked at him.
Matthew's face crumpled.
Luca's voice softened.
"But if he isn't, then someone close to him is lying."
The recording ended.
Silence filled the room.
Matthew stared at the screen.
For a long moment, he could not speak.
Then he whispered:
"I failed him."
Mia looked down.
He continued.
"He asked for help."
His voice broke.
"And I didn't listen."
Mia's eyes filled.
For months, she had blamed Matthew for Luca's death.
Not because she believed he had ordered it.
But because he had been powerful enough to stop it.
Or so she had thought.
Now she saw the truth.
Power did not make a man all-knowing.
Sometimes it only made him more certain of things he should have questioned.
***
The second folder contained photographs.
A warehouse.
A shipping manifest.
A bank transfer.
Then a photograph of Richard Kensington standing beside a man Mia recognized.
Daniel Mercer.
The assistant manager who had hired her.
Matthew leaned forward.
"Mercer."
Vincent nodded.
"Yes."
Mia swallowed.
"He interviewed me."
Matthew looked at her.
"What did he ask?"
She thought back.
"Where I lived. Whether I had family. Whether I was married."
Her stomach tightened.
"He asked whether the baby's father was involved."
Matthew's expression darkened.
Vincent opened another document.
A payment.
Twenty-five thousand dollars.
From North Harbor Consulting to Daniel Mercer.
Dated two days before Mia's first shift.
Matthew stared.
"They placed her there."
Vincent nodded.
"Looks like it."
Mia's hands began shaking.
"Why?"
Matthew looked at her.
"Because they wanted to know whether you had Luca's evidence."
She swallowed.
"And Chloe?"
Vincent frowned.
"Maybe she wasn't supposed to hit you."
Matthew looked toward the window.
"Maybe she was supposed to humiliate Mia."
Mia stared.
"Make me quit?"
Matthew nodded.
"Or frighten you into contacting someone."
Vincent leaned forward.
"Or force Matthew to reveal whether he was protecting you."
Silence.
Mia looked down at her stomach.
Her baby moved.
She placed one hand over him.
For the first time, she understood that the people who had killed Luca might have been watching her for months.
Waiting.
Planning.
Using her poverty and desperation as weapons.
***
The third folder contained a video.
Matthew opened it.
The screen showed a private office.
Richard Kensington sat behind a desk.
Across from him stood a man in a dark suit.
His face was partly hidden.
The audio was faint.
Richard spoke first.
"The lawyer is becoming a problem."
The other man replied:
"Then remove the problem."
Mia covered her mouth.
Matthew leaned closer.
Richard continued.
"Castille trusts him."
The man laughed.
"Then Castille will mourn him."
Matthew's blood turned cold.
The camera shifted.
The second man's face became visible.
Vincent gasped.
Matthew went completely still.
It was Adrian Vale.
His chief financial officer.
A man who had worked beside him for twelve years.
A man who attended Luca's funeral.
A man who had embraced Mia and promised to help her if she ever needed anything.
Matthew stared at the screen.
For a long moment, he did not move.
Then he whispered:
"Adrian."
Vincent looked at him.
"Boss."
Matthew closed his eyes.
The betrayal was almost unbearable.
Adrian had access to everything.
Accounts.
Contracts.
Security schedules.
Employee records.
He had known where Luca was going.
He had known when Mia disappeared.
And he had been standing beside Matthew while pretending to mourn the man he helped destroy.
Matthew opened his eyes.
His expression had changed.
Not into rage.
Into something colder.
Clarity.
He looked at Vincent.
"Call Detective Mara Ellis."
Vincent blinked.
"The police?"
Matthew nodded.
"Yes."
Vincent hesitated.
"Boss, that will expose our accounts."
Matthew looked at him.
"Then they get exposed."
Mia stared.
For years, Matthew had protected his empire at any cost.
Now he was choosing something else.
Truth.
Even if it destroyed him.
***
Detective Ellis arrived that afternoon.
She was a woman in her late thirties with sharp eyes and little patience for powerful men.
She reviewed the evidence.
Then looked at Matthew.
"You're willing to cooperate?"
He nodded.
"Yes."
She studied him.
"Fully?"
Matthew hesitated.
Then nodded again.
"Fully."
Ellis leaned back.
"That means records. Employees. Financial transfers. Everything."
Matthew looked toward Mia.
She sat beside the window.
One hand resting on her stomach.
He thought of Luca.
Of the funeral.
Of the promise he had failed to keep.
Then he looked back at Ellis.
"Everything."
The detective nodded.
"Good."

That evening, Chloe Kensington returned to her father's mansion.
The house felt different.
The lights were dim.
The servants moved quietly.
Her mother had gone to stay with relatives.
Richard stood in his office, speaking into his phone.
Chloe paused outside the door.
"...the widow has the evidence," he said.
Chloe froze.
A pause.
Then:
"Adrian says Castille knows."
Her stomach dropped.
Her father continued.
"Then we need to move the accounts tonight."
Chloe stepped backward.
The floor creaked.
Richard turned.
"Chloe?"
She froze.
He opened the door.
"What are you doing?"
Chloe swallowed.
"Nothing."
His eyes narrowed.
"Did you hear me?"
She shook her head.
Richard studied her.
Then smiled.
It was not a warm smile.
"Come inside."
Chloe hesitated.
"Father—"
"Now."
She stepped into the office.
Richard closed the door.
For the first time in her life, Chloe felt afraid of the man who had raised her.
He poured a drink.
"Do you know what loyalty means?"
Chloe swallowed.
"Yes."
Richard smiled.
"Good."
He placed the glass on the desk.
"Then you'll understand why you must keep quiet."
Chloe stared.
"What did you do?"
Richard's expression hardened.
"Don't ask questions you don't want answered."
She looked at him.
"Did you kill Luca Rossi?"
Silence.
Richard's face changed.
Then he laughed.
"Don't be dramatic."
Chloe felt sick.
She remembered Mia falling.
The pregnant woman curling around her stomach.
Matthew kneeling beside her.
The fear in Mia's eyes.
For the first time, Chloe understood that her cruelty had not happened in a vacuum.
She had been raised to see vulnerable people as disposable.
And now she was looking at the man who had taught her that lesson.
She took a breath.
"I'm going to tell the truth."
Richard stared.
Then his face hardened.
"You'll do no such thing."
Chloe stepped backward.
"Father—"
He moved toward her.
"You have no idea what you're talking about."
She reached for the door.
Richard grabbed her wrist.
"You're not leaving."
Chloe froze.
For the first time, the power of the Kensington name turned against her.
And she understood exactly how Mia had felt on the floor of the Obsidian Room.
***
At the hospital, Mia received a message.
UNKNOWN NUMBER.
YOUR HUSBAND DIED BECAUSE HE TRUSTED MATTHEW CASTILLE.
SHE WILL LOSE HER BABY FOR THE SAME REASON.
Mia stared.
Then another message arrived.
A photograph.
Chloe Kensington.
Sitting in her father's office.
Her face pale.
Her eyes filled with fear.
Beneath it:
SHE KNOWS TOO MUCH NOW.
Mia's stomach tightened.
She looked toward Matthew.
He was speaking with Detective Ellis.
Mia raised the phone.
"Matthew."
He turned.
She showed him the screen.
His face hardened.
For a moment, she expected him to call his men and order retaliation.
Instead, he looked at Ellis.
"We have another witness in danger."
Ellis studied the photograph.
May you like
Then reached for her radio.
And somewhere across Chicago, Chloe Kensington realized that the only person who might save her was the pregnant waitress she had humiliated in public.
