Chapter 1 - The Funeral of a Billionaire and the Cold Betrayal at the Coffin

The air inside St. Jude’s Chapel was heavy with the suffocating scent of white lilies and the quiet, crushing grief of losing the only pillar I had left in the world. Eight months pregnant, my hands rested protectively over my swollen belly as I stood alone beside my billionaire father’s polished mahogany coffin. My father, Marcus Vance, had built an empire from the ground up, a titan of industry who commanded boardrooms and respected no one—except me. Or so I had foolishly believed until today.
As the solemn organ music echoed softly through the chapel, the heavy oak doors swung open, and the man I had given my heart to strode down the aisle. But Caleb wasn't alone. He walked hand-in-hand with Vanessa, his corporate assistant and openly flaunted mistress, who wore a black dress far too tight and inappropriate for mourning. Before I could even process the sheer disrespect, Caleb stepped up to the casket, leaned dangerously close, and whispered words that shattered my soul: “Your father is dead. You’re worthless now. I’m taking everything.”
For a fraction of a second, the entire world blurred. My baby kicked fiercely against my palm, as if sensing the malicious betrayal. Caleb smiled like a conqueror who had already won the war, while Vanessa offered me a patronizing smirk, warning me not to make a scene because “grief makes people emotional.” They assumed I was nothing more than a fragile, pregnant widow ready to be cast aside. They forgot that I was Marcus Vance’s daughter. Across the aisle, my father’s lifelong attorney, Mr. Harlan, met my gaze and gave a subtle, reassuring nod. As Caleb arrogantly demanded to know why the lawyer was present and threatened me with forced estate releases and prenuptial amendments, Mr. Harlan stepped forward holding a black envelope sealed with my father’s private family crest, announcing that the true reckoning was about to begin.
