Chapter 4 - Blood, Bullets, and the Truth About the Heir to the Moretti Throne

Chaos erupted through the sprawling Moretti estate as the crystal chandeliers flickered and died, plunging the opulent mansion into emergency red lighting. Gunfire rattled down the grand hallways, shattering priceless antiques and sending high-society guests screaming into the rain-soaked gardens.

In the heart of the third-floor family wing, Elena sprinted down the dimly lit corridor with her uniform skirt bunched in her hands, her heart hammering against her ribs like a trapped bird. She burst into the nursery room where four-year-old Leo was sleeping soundly in a custom wooden crib, clutching a stuffed teddy bear.

“Leo, wake up, sweetheart. We have to move,” Elena whispered frantically, scooping the sleepy toddler into her arms. The little boy buried his face into her neck, whimpering softly.

Just as she turned toward the hidden panic room behind the mahogany bookshelf, the door to the nursery was kicked violently open.

A massive man in a tactical black vest and balaclava stepped into the room, leveling a suppressed submachine gun right at Elena's chest.

“Well, well, well,” the assassin rasped with a cruel grin. “The boss’s little pet playing mommy. Hand over the boy. The boss from Chicago wants the last true heir of the Moretti bloodline eliminated.”

Elena backed up until her spine hit the wall, shielding little Leo completely with her own body. Her mind raced. This man didn't just want Alessandro dead; they knew about Matteo's son. They knew the secret she had guarded with her life.

“You’ll have to go through me first,” Elena said, her voice shaking but fiercely resolute.

The hitman laughed, tightening his finger on the trigger. “With pleasure, fat little maid—”

Crack!

A deafening gunshot echoed through the room. The assassin’s eyes went wide as a crimson bloom exploded on the back of his tactical vest. He staggered forward, dropping his weapon, and collapsed lifelessly onto the plush nursery carpet.

Standing in the doorway, smoke curling from the barrel of his smoking automatic pistol, was Alessandro. His tuxedo jacket was torn, blood stained the collar of his white shirt, and his eyes were completely black with cold, unadulterated fury.

He rushed across the room, dropping to his knees beside Elena and the child. His hands trembled as he looked at little Leo, who blinked sleepily at the terrifying stranger.

“Is he… is he safe?” Alessandro choked out, his voice cracking in a way Elena had never heard before.

“He’s safe,” Elena whispered, tears streaming down her pale cheeks. “He’s safe, Alessandro. This is your brother Matteo’s son. I smuggled him out of the hospital a year ago when the hit squad first came for your family. I couldn't let them kill him.”

Alessandro stared at the little boy, tracing the familiar shape of his own family's jawline on the child's face. The tough, ruthless mafia boss broke down right there on the nursery floor, pulling both Elena and his nephew into a desperate, fierce embrace as police sirens wailed in the distance.
