Chapter 2 - The Crimson Trail Across the Atlantic

The private airstrip in Paris shimmered under a cold drizzle as the Gulfstream taxied to a halt. Inside the cabin, Emily adjusted her cashmere scarf, gazing out at the misty horizon of the City of Light. Her heart felt lighter than it had in years, though a persistent, dull ache lingered in her chest—a ghost of the love she had once held for the man who ruled Chicago's underworld.

“Dr. Carter?” a polite, crisp voice sounded from the tarmac as the cabin door opened. A tall, impeccably dressed French medical administrator stood under a large black umbrella. “Welcome to Paris. Your residence near the Rue de Rivoli is fully prepared, and your suite at Assistance Publique-Hôpitaux de Paris is ready for your arrival tomorrow.”

“Thank you, Dr. Laurent,” Emily replied, offering a genuine, if tired, smile as she descended the stairs. “It’s wonderful to be here.”

Within hours, Emily was settled into her new apartment. It was a stunning, light-filled Haussmann-style flat with high ceilings, intricate crown molding, and large French windows overlooking a quiet, tree-lined cobblestone street. Setting the ivory box containing the white baby shoes gently on her bedside table, she felt a profound wave of peace wash over her. Here, she was not the wife of a mafia boss who had to dodge FBI inquiries, wear bulletproof vests to charity galas, and swallow her pride every time Sophia’s name lit up a phone screen. Here, she was Dr. Emily Carter—a world-class cardiothoracic surgeon and a mother protecting her child.

Meanwhile, back in Chicago, the Moretti empire was burning.

Vincent Moretti stood in the center of his demolished penthouse office. Shards of crystal, shattered mahogany, and torn legal documents littered the Persian rug. Dominic and three of his most trusted enforcers stood silently by the door, not daring to breathe too loudly.

“What do you mean, her flight landed six hours ago?” Vincent shouted into his encrypted satellite phone, his voice shaking with a terrifying fury that made even his hardened hitmen flinch. “Track her GPS! Track her credit cards! Find out every single address she’s registered in Europe!”

“Boss, we tried,” Dominic said cautiously, stepping forward. “Her French legal counsel secured an international privacy injunction within an hour of landing. Her residential coordinates and hospital affiliations are sealed under European medical confidentiality laws. Even our contacts in Interpol can’t breach it without a federal extradition warrant—and you don't have grounds for one. She didn't commit a crime. She legally divorced you under a no-fault fast-track clause, and she left the country.”

Vincent slammed his fist against the marble fireplace mantel, cracking the stone. Legal. No-fault. Divorce.

The words tasted like ash and blood in his mouth.

“She’s carrying my child, Dominic,” Vincent whispered, his voice dropping into a jagged, broken rasp that terrified his men far more than his screaming ever could. The ruthless crime lord, the man who had ordered executions without blinking and controlled half the shipping ports in the Midwest, looked like a man standing over an open grave. “She’s pregnant. And I drove her away. I chose Sophia’s fake panic attacks over my own wife and my unborn child.”

“Boss… Sophia is downstairs,” Dominic muttered nervously. “She heard about the commotion and came over from her apartment. She’s asking for you.”

Hearing that name ignited a nuclear blast of fury inside Vincent’s chest. In two massive strides, he crossed the room, grabbed Dominic by the lapels of his suit jacket, and hoisted him off the floor.

“If that manipulative, lying parasite ever steps foot in my home again,” Vincent snarled, his eyes pitch-black with murderous intent, “I will personally throw her off the balcony. Get her out of my sight. Burn her penthouse lease, cut off her trust fund, and make sure she never, ever breathes within a ten-mile radius of me again. If she calls my phone, feed her number to the federal prosecutors.”

Dominic nodded rapidly, pale-faced. “Consider it done, Boss.”

Vincent dropped him, grabbed his black leather jacket, and walked out the door without looking back. “Get the private jet prepped for transatlantic flight. File whatever flight plan you have to bribe, threaten, or forge. I’m going to Paris.”

For the next two weeks, Emily lived in a blissful bubble of quiet routine. Her mornings were spent reviewing complex surgical cases at the hospital, her afternoons walking along the Seine while breathing in the crisp autumn air, and her evenings resting while tracking the steady, healthy growth of her baby. Her morning sickness had begun to fade, replaced by a radiant glow and a fierce, protective maternal instinct.

She knew Vincent would come. A man like Vincent Moretti did not simply accept defeat, let alone the loss of his bloodline. But Europe was vast, and her legal shield was impenetrable.

Until the rainy Tuesday afternoon when her hospital pager went off during a departmental meeting.

“Dr. Carter, urgent consultation requested in the VIP cardiac wing. A foreign national patient presenting with acute hypertensive crisis and severe tachycardia. Refuses to let anyone else examine him.”

Emily frowned, slipping her white lab coat over her shoulders. “Who is the patient?”

“He wouldn’t give his full name, Doctor,” the head nurse replied nervously, checking her clipboard. “Only that he is an American VIP with direct diplomatic clearance from the French Ministry of Health, and that he insists on seeing the lead cardiothoracic surgeon immediately.”

Emily felt a sudden, icy shiver race down her spine. Her footsteps slowed as she approached the private VIP suite at the end of the sterile, brightly lit corridor. Two burly men in bespoke Italian suits—men she recognized instantly as high-ranking Moretti enforcers—stood silently outside the heavy oak double doors.

They locked eyes with her as she approached. Instead of blocking her, they stepped aside, their expressions a mix of grim respect and sheer terror of the man inside.

Emily’s hand gripped the brass handle of the door. She pushed it open.

The room was dimly lit. Standing by the floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking the rain-slicked streets of Paris was a tall, broad-shouldered man in a crumpled black shirt, his sleeves rolled up to his elbows, revealing the intricate tattoos of the Moretti syndicate wrapping around his powerful forearms.

Vincent slowly turned around.

His face was gaunt, dark stubble shadowing his hollow cheeks, his dark eyes bloodshot and haunted. The immaculate, untouchable mafia boss of Chicago looked like a man who had walked through hell and back just to find her.

“Hello, Emily,” Vincent said, his voice raw, shaking, and trembling with an emotion she had never heard from him before. Fear.
