Chapter 2 - THE MAFIA BOSS DISCOVERED HIS MISTRESS HAD FORGED HIS PREGNANT WIFE'S SIGNATURE—BUT THE SECRET BENEATH HER GRANDMOTHER'S MILL WAS WORTH MORE THAN HIS BILLION-DOLLAR EMPIRE

By sunrise, Ethan Cole had made three decisions.

He would cooperate with the investigation.

He would remove Vanessa Reed from every position she held inside Cole Development.

And he would stop pretending his marriage could be repaired with an apology.

The first two decisions were easy.

The third was almost unbearable.

***

At seven fifteen, Ethan entered Cole Development's headquarters in Manhattan.

Employees straightened as he crossed the lobby.

His assistant, Daniel Brooks, hurried toward him.

"Mr. Cole, Ms. Reed has been calling."

Ethan didn't slow down.

"Where is she?"

"Her office."

"Have security restrict her access to company systems."

Daniel blinked.

"Sir?"

"Immediately."

***

Vanessa stood beside the windows of her office when Ethan entered.

She turned with a smile.

"Darling."

Ethan closed the door.

"Don't call me that."

Her smile faded.

"What's wrong?"

He placed a folder on her desk.

"Explain."

Vanessa opened it.

Inside were copies of the forged land transfer.

The suspicious bank records.

And the vehicle assignment logs.

She looked up slowly.

"Where did you get these?"

Ethan stared.

"That's your question?"

She laughed softly.

"Ethan, you know how complicated these acquisitions are."

He stepped closer.

"Did you forge Nora's signature?"

Vanessa's expression hardened.

"She was delaying the project."

"Answer."

She looked away.

Ethan's voice dropped.

"Did you?"

***

For several seconds, Vanessa said nothing.

Then she sighed.

"Yes."

The confession hit him harder than he expected.

He stared.

"Why?"

"Because she wouldn't sign."

Ethan felt something inside him turn cold.

"So you stole her property."

Vanessa crossed her arms.

"I protected your investment."

He laughed bitterly.

"My investment?"

She stepped closer.

"Ethan, you were going to lose hundreds of millions because your wife was sentimental about an abandoned mill."

His jaw tightened.

"That land belonged to her grandmother."

"And now it belongs to a development company."

"Not legally."

Vanessa's eyes narrowed.

"Don't be naive."

***

Ethan looked at her.

For the first time, he saw something he had ignored for months.

Vanessa wasn't simply ambitious.

She was ruthless in a way that had nothing to do with survival.

She believed other people's lives were obstacles.

And he had given her power because she made him feel admired.

***

"You're finished here," Ethan said.

Vanessa stared.

"What?"

"Your access is revoked. Your contracts are suspended pending legal review. Our attorneys will contact you."

She laughed.

"You can't be serious."

Ethan opened the door.

Two security officers stood outside.

Vanessa's face changed.

"Ethan."

He looked at her.

She stepped closer.

"You think Nora will take you back if you destroy me?"

His jaw tightened.

"This isn't about Nora taking me back."

"Then what is it about?"

He swallowed.

"Doing one honest thing before I lose everything."

***

Vanessa stared at him.

Then smiled coldly.

"You have no idea what you've started."

Ethan stepped aside.

"Then I suggest you explain it to the investigators."

***

By noon, Vanessa had been questioned by authorities.

Her attorneys denied wrongdoing.

Dominic Cole stopped answering calls.

And Cole Development's board demanded an emergency meeting.

***

Ethan sat at the head of the conference table while his chief financial officer, Alan Pierce, explained the financial discrepancies.

"Approximately forty-six million dollars has been moved through related entities over fourteen months."

Ethan stared.

"Forty-six million?"

Alan nodded.

"Possibly more."

A board member leaned forward.

"How did this happen?"

Ethan looked at him.

"Because I wasn't paying attention."

Silence.

He continued.

"I gave Vanessa authority she shouldn't have had."

"And Dominic?"

Ethan's jaw tightened.

"He's involved."

***

The board erupted.

Questions.

Accusations.

Threats.

Ethan listened.

Then raised one hand.

The room fell silent.

"I'm ordering an independent forensic audit."

A director stared.

"That could expose the company to enormous liability."

Ethan nodded.

"Then we'll face it."

***

For the first time in years, Ethan wasn't thinking about protecting the Cole name.

He was thinking about the woman lying in a hospital bed because people had used that name to hurt her.

***

Meanwhile, Nora was learning the truth about her grandmother's land.

Rebecca arrived at the hospital with an older man carrying a weathered leather briefcase.

"Nora, this is Samuel Whitaker."

Nora frowned.

The man smiled gently.

"I worked with your grandmother."

Nora stared.

"At the mill?"

He nodded.

"For thirty-two years."

***

Samuel explained that Nora's grandmother, Eleanor Bennett, had spent decades preserving records connected to the old textile mill.

The property had once been part of a much larger industrial operation.

During the 1980s, several companies had used the warehouses to store equipment and chemical materials.

Some of those materials had been improperly disposed of.

***

Nora's stomach tightened.

"What does that have to do with Vanessa?"

Samuel opened his briefcase.

Inside were photographs.

Maps.

And old environmental reports.

He pointed toward the mill.

"Because beneath this building is a sealed storage area."

Nora stared.

"What kind of storage area?"

Samuel hesitated.

"One containing evidence of illegal dumping."

***

Rebecca leaned forward.

Samuel continued.

"Your grandmother discovered that the companies responsible had concealed the contamination."

Nora swallowed.

"Why didn't she report it?"

"She did."

Samuel's expression darkened.

"But the investigation disappeared."

***

Nora stared.

"How?"

Samuel looked down.

"Money. Influence. People protecting each other."

***

For a moment, nobody spoke.

Then Samuel said:

"Your grandmother kept copies of everything."

Nora's heart tightened.

"Where?"

Samuel looked at her.

"Under the mill."

***

The room went silent.

Nora stared.

"That's what Dominic wants."

Samuel nodded.

"If those records become public, several powerful companies could face enormous liability."

Rebecca looked at Nora.

"And someone may have been trying to destroy the evidence before anyone could recover it."

***

Nora closed her eyes.

She remembered her grandmother standing beside the orchard.

The smell of apples.

The old cottage.

The river beyond the trees.

She remembered asking why her grandmother refused to sell the land.

Eleanor had smiled.

"Because some things are worth more than money, sweetheart."

Nora had thought she meant memories.

Now she understood.

Her grandmother had been protecting something.

And perhaps someone.

***

That afternoon, Dr. Patel entered the room.

She checked Nora's condition.

The contractions had slowed.

Her blood pressure was improving.

And the baby remained stable.

***

"You've been through a great deal," Dr. Patel said gently.

Nora nodded.

"Can I go home?"

"Not yet."

Nora sighed.

The doctor smiled.

"I know you want to leave. But we need to make sure you and your daughter are safe."

Nora looked down at her stomach.

Then nodded.

"Okay."

***

After the doctor left, Rebecca asked:

"Do you want Ethan to know about the mill?"

Nora hesitated.

For a moment, she remembered the man she had married.

Then the man who had betrayed her.

Finally, she said:

"He needs to know what his company was used for."

Rebecca nodded.

"But I want him to hear it from the investigators."

***

That evening, Ethan received a call from Detective Elena Ramirez.

She explained that the investigation had expanded.

The forged land transfer was connected to the financial fraud.

The vehicle used in the collision had been assigned through Vanessa's office.

And Dominic Cole was now a person of interest.

***

Ethan listened in silence.

Then asked:

"Did Vanessa order the attack?"

Detective Ramirez paused.

"We're investigating that."

Ethan swallowed.

"Is Nora safe?"

"She's receiving medical care. We have also arranged appropriate security."

He closed his eyes.

"Thank you."

***

After the call, Ethan sat alone in his office.

He looked at a photograph on his desk.

Nora.

Smiling.

Standing beside the orchard in autumn.

He had taken the photograph two years earlier.

She had been laughing because he couldn't tell the difference between a pear tree and an apple tree.

He remembered kissing her beneath the branches.

He remembered promising he would never let anything happen to her.

Then he remembered Vanessa's perfume.

Her apartment.

The lies.

***

For the first time, Ethan allowed himself to admit the truth without excuses.

He had betrayed his wife.

He had neglected her.

And his arrogance had made it easier for dangerous people to exploit his business.

***

He removed the expensive watch Vanessa had given him.

Placed it on the desk.

Then called his attorney.

"I want to make a statement."

The attorney hesitated.

"About what?"

Ethan stared at Nora's photograph.

"Everything."

***

Three days later, Dominic Cole was located at a private airfield outside Albany.

He had been preparing to leave the country.

Investigators detained him for questioning.

Inside his luggage, they found copies of the mill's old maps.

And a handwritten note.

The note contained three words.

DESTROY THE ARCHIVE.

***

That night, Nora received a message from an unknown number.

It contained a photograph of the old cottage.

Then another message.

Your grandmother wasn't the only person who knew what happened there.

Nora stared at the screen.

A third message arrived.

May you like

Ask Ethan what his father did in 1987.
