Chapter 3 - The Ledger of Blood and the Collapse of the Syndicate

Pandemonium erupted in the Grand Astoria Ballroom. Guests scrambled away from the head table as security guards swarmed the perimeter, locking all the heavy exit doors from the outside with heavy iron deadbolts. Dante Moretti’s face turned an ugly shade of purple as he sputtered, trying to maintain a facade of outraged innocence.
“This is an outrage! Fabricated lies! You’re framing me because you’ve always resented our influence in the commission!” Dante yelled, his voice cracking slightly as Viktor shoved the captured assassin onto his knees right in front of the head table.
Dominic didn't even dignify the outburst with a glance. Instead, he looked down at Clara, his expression softening into one of profound, fierce admiration. With gentle, calloused fingers, he reached out and took her taped hands in his, carefully unwrapping a layer of the medical gauze to reveal the raw, blistered skin underneath. A muscle feathered in Dominic’s jaw. The sight of her sacrifice—bleeding in secret just to ensure his family looked respectable—lit a fire in his chest that nothing could extinguish.
“You all looked down on her,” Dominic said, turning his gaze slowly back toward the terrified faces of his extended family and the trembling Moretti faction. His voice was dangerously calm. “You laughed when she was sent to the kitchen. You mocked her weight, her background, her quiet nature. You thought she was weak because she chose grace over violence.”
Dominic reached into his tailored inner jacket pocket and pulled out a thick, leather-bound ledger—the very ledger Clara had spent months decoding. He tossed it heavily onto the center of the main table, right in front of Dante Moretti.
“For the past six months, while you were all plotting my assassination and skimming percentages off the port authority docks, my wife sat in an attic. She didn't just fix a dress,” Dominic’s voice rang out, clear and merciless. “She meticulously decoded every single offshore account, shell company, and bribe payment linking the Moretti family to federal racketeering and international arms smuggling. Every single transaction is documented right here.”
Dante’s eyes bulged as he stared at the leather book. He knew those pages. That was his life’s work, hidden behind layers of encrypted digital servers that federal investigators had spent a decade trying to crack.
“She... she did that?” Beatrice whispered, her face completely drained of color as she stared at Clara in absolute horror. The plus-size woman she had humiliated and banished to the kitchen was the very architect of her family's complete and utter destruction.
“She did,” Dominic confirmed proudly, pulling Clara closer so that she stood shoulder-to-shoulder with him, no longer hiding in the shadows, but shining under the blinding chandeliers. “And not only did she secure our financial security, but when her trained eyes spotted your little hitman standing by the service doors tonight, she didn't panic. She warned me. She saved my life.”
Dante snapped. Driven by sheer desperation and blind rage, the older mob boss lunged across the table, grabbing a jagged stem of a broken champagne glass, aiming directly for Clara's throat.
“If I’m going down, I’m taking the fat bitch with me!” Dante screamed.
The entire room held its breath. Women screamed, covering their eyes.
But Clara didn't flinch. With the cool, calculated reflexes of a woman who had survived a lifetime of hardship, she sidestepped effortlessly, her hand shooting out to grab Dante's wrist with shocking strength. With a sharp twist, she used his own momentum to send him crashing face-first into the mahogany table, shattering crystal and silverware alike.
Before Dante could push himself up, Dominic’s heavy leather boot came down squarely on the back of his neck, pinning him firmly to the floor.

“It’s over, Dante,” Dominic said coldly. “The commission is mine. Your empire is gone. And anyone who ever disrespects my wife again will share your exact fate.”
Within minutes, federal sirens wailed outside the grand estate. State police and federal agents swarmed the ballroom, arresting Dante, Beatrice, and every single associate tied to the assassination plot. The Coretti syndicate was purged of its rot in a single, lightning-fast sweep orchestrated by a mafia boss and his brilliant, underestimated wife.
