Chapter 4 - The Shadow of the Matriarch

Helena’s hand twitched against the armrest of her chair, the first physical sign of crack in her marble exterior.

The fire in the hearth crackled loudly, throwing dancing orange shadows across the oil paintings of Moretti ancestors lining the walls.

Grace continued to eat quietly, oblivious to the monstrous truths being laid bare across the room.

"You forged my father’s authorization," Luca whispered, his eyes boring into his mother’s soul.

"You used his seal before his body was even cold in the ground."

"You sent men to terrorize my pregnant wife while I was negotiating peace treaties in New York."

"And when you realized she had survived the winter, you kept her under surveillance to make sure she never found her way back to Chicago."

Helena let out a sharp, brittle laugh that contained neither warmth nor remorse.

"And what if I did?" she challenged, raising her chin with stubborn aristocratic arrogance.

"Look at her, Luca!"

"Look at what you brought into this dynasty!"

"A girl who smells of cheap detergent and poverty!"

"The Bellini alliance would have given us control of the entire eastern seaboard."

"Vanessa Bellini has political blood, syndicate backing, and millions in overseas assets."

"What does this little stray bring to the Moretti name?"

Luca stepped closer, his shadow engulfing the matriarch completely.

"She brings my blood," Luca said, his voice trembling with a ferocious, righteous fury.

"She brings my soul."

"She kept my child alive while you sat in this mansion drinking vintage wine paid for by blood money."

"You stole five years of my daughter’s life from me."

"Five years of her first steps, her first words, her laughter, and her tears."

"You made me believe I was a widower whose grief drove him into becoming a ruthless butcher."

"I became the monster Chicago fears because I thought I had nothing left to lose in this world."

"And all the while, you had my wife cleaning floors ten miles from my office!"

I looked at Luca, seeing the raw agony carved into the lines of his face.

For five years, I had hated him.

I had imagined him laughing in penthouses with glamorous women while Grace coughed through winter nights without medicine.

I had cursed his name every time our landlord pounded on our door demanding overdue rent.

Now, watching him stand between his powerful mother and our hungry child, the bitter ice around my heart began to fracture.

He hadn't abandoned us.

He had been hunted by the same ghost that had pursued me.

"How did you find this house, Emily?" Luca asked suddenly, turning his head toward me with an intensity that took my breath away.

"How did you end up applying for a maid position in my own estate?"

I wiped a stray tear from my cheek with the back of my apron.

"I didn't choose this house, Luca," I confessed.

"Three weeks ago, an agency on Michigan Avenue called me."

"They said an anonymous patron had paid my placement fee for a high-paying domestic position at a private residence in Lake Forest."

"They told me the owner was an investor who traveled abroad nine months out of the year."

"They offered three times my usual wage."

"Grace was sick, and her prescription costs had doubled."

"I took the job because I was desperate."

"I had no idea the house belonged to you until I saw the family portraits on the grand staircase on my second day."

"And by then, the agency contract had a penalty clause that would have sent me to jail if I broke it."

Luca’s eyes slowly drifted back to his mother.

The pieces of the puzzle were falling into place with terrifying precision.

"You brought her here," Luca deduced, his voice dropping to a deathly whisper.

"You knew I was returning this week."

"You planned this."

Helena smiled, a venomous, triumphant smirk that sent a chill straight down my spine.

"Of course I did," she admitted without hesitation.

"I wanted you to see her exactly as she is: a broken, destitute servant."

"I wanted Vanessa to humiliate her in front of every capo in the city."

"I wanted to break whatever pathetic memory you were still clinging to."

"I wanted you to see the contrast between the queen I chose for you and the beggar you married in secret."

"I thought you would look at her in that uniform and feel disgusted with yourself."

"I thought you would finally put an end to this childish romantic nonsense and marry the Bellini girl."

Luca stood motionless for three agonizing seconds.

Then he reached down, took Helena’s untouched champagne glass, and dropped it onto the floor at her feet.

The glass shattered into a thousand jagged diamonds.

"You miscalculated, Mother," Luca said coldly.

"You forgot that I am Antonio Moretti’s son."

"And an attack on my wife and child is an act of high treason against this family."

Helena’s smile vanished, replaced by an expression of cold shock.

"I am your mother, Luca," she hissed, rising from her chair to confront him.

"You cannot touch me."

"The council will never allow you to move against the matriarch."

May you like

"The council answers to the man who holds the family ring," Luca replied, holding up his right hand where the heavy gold Moretti crest gleamed in the firelight.

"And starting tonight, you are no longer the matriarch of this estate."
