Chapter 4 - The House of Cards Collapses

Chaos erupted in the Whitmore Grand Ballroom. Flashbulbs blinded the air as photographers from financial blogs and gossip columns swarmed our table, their cameras capturing every agonizing second of Adrian’s public execution. Security guards rushed forward, but they didn't know whether to protect the billionaire founder or clear the path for the federal agents. Sloane tried to push her way through the crowd toward us, screaming Adrian’s name in shrill panic, but two security personnel blocked her path, effectively sealing her off from the wreckage she had helped create.

Adrian lunged forward, his hands gripping the edge of our table so hard his knuckles turned white. All pretense of corporate polish was gone, replaced by raw, unadulterated terror. “Evelyn, please!” he hissed, his voice trembling violently as he leaned down close to my face. “If these accounts are frozen, the stock market opens in less than thirty-six hours! Vale Meridian will crash! The board will oust me, the SEC will investigate every subsidiary, and I’ll lose everything—everything I worked for!”

“You worked for?” I repeated, raising an eyebrow. I finally stood up, smoothing down the front of my emerald evening gown, towering over him despite his height. “Adrian, you spent the last four months telling your mistress that I was emotionally dependent on you, that I couldn't survive without your protection. You thought my silence meant weakness. You thought my loyalty was a blank check for your greed and your arrogance.”

“We can fix this!” he pleaded, ignoring the federal agents stepping closer to his shoulders. “We can go home, we can sign a quiet private settlement, we can announce a mutual separation—whatever you want! Just call off the asset freeze!”

“There is nothing to fix,” I said calmly, looking past him toward Arthur Sterling. “The forensic audits are complete. Every single transfer you made to your secret accounts, every penny you funneled into that Tribeca penthouse for Sloane, and every falsified signature has been documented and submitted to the United States Attorney's Office. Your career as a tech visionary is officially over.”

Arthur stepped forward, placing a heavy manila envelope directly into Adrian’s limp hands. “Mr. Vale, you are legally required to surrender your passport to federal custody tonight. Any attempt to access restricted servers or contact company officers will result in immediate incarceration.”

Adrian stared down at the envelope as if it were a physical death sentence. The mighty titan of Manhattan tech, the man who had stood on this very stage thirty minutes earlier basking in applause and celebrating his own brilliance, was now a trembling, broken shell of a man. He slowly turned his head to look across the ballroom, searching for Sloane. But Sloane was already pushing her way frantically through the exit doors, her scarlet silk gown catching on a chair as she bolted from the room, abandoning the sinking ship without looking back once. She had wanted his new life, his bright future, and his billionaire status—and now she was left with a disgraced criminal facing federal prison time.

I turned away from Adrian without another word, linking arms with my father, who had appeared beside our table to escort me out. As we walked down the central aisle, the crowd parted in absolute awe and silence. The flashbulbs continued to pop, capturing the exact moment a betrayed wife took back her empire, leaving her cheating husband standing alone in the ruins of his own manufactured greatness.
