Chapter 3 - The Eradication of the Abusive Ex, the Underworld Don’s Final Ultimatum, and the Unbreakable New Dawn of an Independent QueenBy noon the following day, the storm over Manhattan had cleared, leaving behind a brilliant, crisp autumn sun that gleamed off the glass towers of Wall Street.

Inside the executive boardroom of Wallace Shipping & Logistics, Declan Wallace was pouring himself a glass of scotch at 11:00 a.m., his hands shaking slightly as he tried to steady his nerves. The charity gala had been a disaster. Not only had his fiancée vanished into a mysterious elevator with the city’s most dangerous underworld king, but his corporate accounts had been flagged for an emergency liquidity audit by an anonymous maritime holding firm.

The heavy mahogany doors of the boardroom swung open without warning.

Declan spun around, his face flushing with angry red. “I told my secretary I am not to be disturbed—!”

The words died in his throat.

Jedadiah Costa walked into the boardroom, flanked by two towering enforcers. He wore a razor-sharp charcoal suit, his dark hair cropped close, his expression carved from absolute granite. He didn't sit down; he walked straight to the head of the mahogany table and slammed a thick manila folder onto the polished wood.

Declan swallowed hard, stepping backward until his legs hit his leather executive chair. “J-Jedadiah... Mr. Costa. To what do I owe the... the unexpected visit?”

“Sit down, Declan,” Jedadiah commanded softly.

Declan dropped heavily into his chair, his hands sweating. “Look, about last night at the St. Regis... it was a private family matter! A misunderstanding with my fiancée—!”

“Your former fiancée,” Jedadiah corrected, his voice dropping into a register of absolute, freezing death that made the temperature in the boardroom plummet. “Miss Naomi Hart is currently under the direct protection of the Costa estate. Her father’s historical union debts to your family have been officially audited, recalculated, and paid in full—leaving you with a net zero claim to her life, her inheritance, or her presence.”

Declan’s jaw dropped. “You... you paid off her debt? Why would you care about a penniless orphan—?! That’s my leverage!”

“Leverage is for men who cannot build their own empires,” Jedadiah stated coldly. He tapped the manila folder. “Furthermore, our forensic accountants have reviewed Wallace Logistics’ shipping ledgers from the last three years. You’ve been skimming from the North American freight lanes to cover your private gambling losses in Atlantic City.”

The color drained completely from Declan’s face. He looked like a man staring into an open grave. “That’s... that’s federal prison territory...!”

“It is,” Jedadiah agreed smoothly. “Unless you sign this document.”

Jedadiah slid a single sheet of paper across the table alongside a gold pen.

Declan’s trembling fingers picked it up. It was a formal, irrevocable deed of corporate surrender and a restraining order. It stripped Declan of his remaining voting shares in Wallace Logistics, transferred them into an independent maritime trust, and legally barred him from ever contacting, approaching, or speaking Naomi Hart’s name again for the rest of his natural life.

“If you refuse,” Jedadiah continued, leaning down slightly, his dark eyes burning with liquid fire, “I will hand these financial ledgers to the federal prosecutor before lunch, and I will personally ensure your remaining days in a maximum-security cell are exceptionally unpleasant.”

Declan didn't hesitate. He grabbed the gold pen, his hand shaking uncontrollably, and scribbled his signature across the bottom of the page.

Two hours later, back at the fortified Hudson River estate, the atmosphere inside the grand library was quiet and bathed in warm afternoon sunlight.

Naomi sat by the tall bay window, wearing a comfortable cashmere sweater provided by the estate staff, sipping chamomile tea. Her foot was bandaged, but the pain had subsided into a dull, manageable ache.

The heavy double doors opened.

Jedadiah walked in, holding a single, signed piece of paper. He crossed the room and laid it on the small table beside her chair.

Naomi looked down at the document. It was Declan’s signed surrender and permanent restraining order.

“It’s done,” Jedadiah said quietly, standing beside her chair, looking out at the river. “He has no shares, no leverage, and no legal right to ever approach you again. Wallace Logistics is being restructured under a neutral board of directors.”

Tears hot and unbidden spilled over Naomi’s eyelashes. For two years, she had felt trapped inside an endless nightmare of abuse, debt, and fear. In less than twenty-four hours, the most feared man in New York had walked into her life, stopped a monster in an elevator, and casually erased her entire past with a stroke of a pen.

She looked up at him, her voice trembling. “Why did you do all of this, Jedadiah? You don't even know me.”

Jedadiah turned his head, his dark, impenetrable eyes softening just a fraction as he looked down at her.

“I know what it’s like to carry weight that isn't yours,” Jedadiah murmured, his voice dropping into a husky, hypnotic register. “And I know that a woman who crawls into a steel box bleeding and refuses to break... is a woman who deserves an empire of her own.”

He reached out, his warm, calloused fingers gently catching her chin, tilting her face upward.

Naomi didn't pull away. Instead, she leaned into his touch, finding a fierce, unbreakable safety she had never known existed.

The nightmare was over, the monster was defeated, and as Jedadiah pulled her gently against his heart, the runaway fiancée knew she had finally found a king worth surrendering her heart to forever.
