Chapter 15

The kitchen clock ticked loudly against the wall, marking the passage of seconds that felt like hours. Elena kept her chin up, though her eyes were bright with an honest, restrained remorse. "I owe you an apology," Elena said, the words coming out slowly, each one requiring a deliberate effort of will. "I let my temper and my pride blind me. I accused you of something you didn't do, and I treated you with a cruelty I have no excuse for." Clara stared at her, the hostility and fear in her young face slowly giving way to a quiet, weary surprise. She shifted her canvas bag on her shoulder, her fingers tightening around the strap. "Thank you, ma'am," Clara said softly, the title used not out of subservience, but out of a desire to put distance between them. "Mr. Julian explained everything." "You don't have to come back tomorrow if you don't want to," Elena added, her voice dropping lower, losing none of its dignity. "Your job is here if you want it, on your terms. But whatever you decide, I am deeply sorry." Clara looked at Mrs. Gable, then back at Elena, reading the genuine lack of defense in the older woman's posture. "I'll think about it, Mrs. Julian," Clara said quietly. She nodded once, turned on her heel, and pushed open the exit door that led out into the cool, quiet American night. Elena stood in the bright kitchen for a long time after the door closed, listening to the hum of the refrigerator, feeling the strange, grounding peace of a hard truth finally spoken aloud.
