Chapter 3 - The Monday Morning Corporate Execution

Monday morning arrived with the brisk, unforgiving chill typical of late November in Chicago. By 8:30 AM, while Adrian was likely nursing a headache and trying to figure out how to explain my sudden disappearance to his associates, I was already seated at the mahogany conference table on the top floor of the Moretti Tower. Flanked by my grandfather’s veteran chief legal counsel, Marcus Vance, and three senior forensic auditors, I opened a sleek leather folio containing the final documents of the morning's financial maneuvers.

The boardroom doors flew open at precisely 9:00 AM, and Adrian strode in, looking disheveled, his tailored suit jacket slightly wrinkled, his jaw clenched in suppressed rage. He had clearly expected to find me cowering at home or waiting by a phone; instead, he found his wife sitting in the primary executive chair, flanked by lawyers who usually represented international cartels and federal regulators.

“Claire,” Adrian barked, his voice echoing off the glass walls as he slammed his hands onto the table. “This ridiculous stunt has gone far enough. You packed a bag, you stayed out for the weekend, and now you’re playing corporate dress-up. Get your things and come home right now. Sophia has already packed up the guest room and apologized for upsetting you.”

I didn't flinch. I didn't even look up from my tablet. I simply slid a certified document across the polished wood toward him. “Read page four, Adrian. Specifically the section regarding the collateralized logistics contracts.”

Adrian sneered, picking up the paper with trembling fingers, expecting another plea for attention. But as his eyes scanned the first paragraph, the arrogant smirk vanished completely from his face. His color turned a sickly, ghostly gray. He dropped the paper as if it were burning his skin. “This... this is impossible. You don't have the voting rights to seize the port authority accounts! Those are tied directly to the Moretti syndicate’s primary cash flow!”

“Not anymore,” Marcus Vance intervened smoothly, adjusting his spectacles. “Three hours ago, acting under Mrs. Moretti’s direct instructions as the majority silent stakeholder of the parent holding company, we executed a debt-call on all unsecured Moretti loans. Your primary shipping terminals are currently frozen pending a federal compliance audit.”

Adrian lunged forward, his eyes wild with sheer fury and desperation. He glared at me, the dangerous mafia boss exposed beneath a veneer of absolute panic. “You did this? You planned a hostile takeover of my empire just because of a piece of pie?”

May you like

“No, Adrian,” I said softly, finally standing up and looking him straight in the eye without a trace of fear. “I did this because for three years, you treated me like dirt to keep another woman comfortable. You thought I was invisible. Now, everyone in Chicago is going to see exactly who holds the power.”
