Chapter 3 - The Awakening in the Master Suite, the Public Humiliation of the Wicked Cousin, and the Happy Ending of the Duke and His DuchessFor thirty-six hours, Blackthorn Hall held its collective breath.

Inside the master suite, a roaring fire crackled in the stone hearth, casting dancing golden shadows across the vaulted ceiling. The estate’s private physician had worked tirelessly through the night, administering warm tonics, monitoring her breathing, and wrapping her in heated blankets until the dangerous chill finally left her body.

Alexander never left her bedside. He sat in a high-backed armchair, holding her limp hand in his, refusing to eat, sleep, or attend to estate business. The ruthless, impeccably disciplined Duke of Blackthorn had been reduced to a terrified husband, praying to a God he hadn't bargained with in years to spare the woman who had brought his cold soul back to life.

It was late evening on the second day when a soft cough broke the silence of the room.

Eleanor’s dark lashes fluttered. She blinked slowly against the warm firelight, her dry lips parting as she tried to speak. “A... Alexander...?”

Alexander snapped to attention. He surged out of his chair, dropping to his knees beside the mattress, gently taking her hand and pressing it passionately against his lips. “I’m here, my love. I’m right here. You’re safe.”

“Toby... the boy... did they find him?” she whispered urgently, her maternal instinct kicking in instantly.

“Toby is safe, warm, and currently eating his third bowl of porridge downstairs thanks to you,” Alexander smiled, a profound wave of relief washing over his tired features as he brushed a stray curl from her forehead. “You saved his life, Eleanor. You’re a hero. But you scared me half to death.”

Eleanor managed a weak, teasing smile. “A good duchess... looks after her tenants, doesn't she?”

“A good duchess,” Alexander corrected softly, leaning in to press a tender, lingering kiss to her lips, “is the only thing that matters in this world to her duke.”

While the master suite was finally filled with the warm, healing light of reconciliation, downstairs in the grand drawing room, a reckoning was about to take place.

Lady Clara Vance sat sipping sherry by the fire, believing she was entirely alone and secretly celebrating the fact that the duchess’s near-fatal foolishness would surely ruin her reputation in high society.

The heavy doors of the drawing room swung open.

Alexander strode into the room. He wasn't wearing his riding coat; he wore a sharp black evening suit, his slate-grey eyes burning with the terrifying, untouchable authority of the Duke of Blackthorn. Behind him stood the estate’s chief legal counsel carrying a thick stack of formal parchment documents.

Clara froze, her glass slipping slightly in her hand. “A-Alexander... I thought you were upstairs playing nursemaid to your exhausted bride.”

“My wife is resting comfortably, Clara,” Alexander stated, his voice dropping into a register of absolute, freezing ice. “Which gives me precisely enough time to address certain parasites living under my roof.”

Clara stood up, attempting to summon her haughty aristocratic defense. “How dare you speak to me that way! I am your blood! I am a lady of high birth!”

“You are a malicious, gossiping liability,” Alexander interrupted, motioning to the attorney, who stepped forward and tossed a set of legal papers onto the tea table in front of her. “As of this exact moment, your monthly financial stipend from the Blackthorn estate is permanently revoked. Your lease on your London townhouse has been terminated, and you have exactly twenty-four hours to pack your trunks and vacate my property. If you ever attempt to step foot in Blackthorn Hall again, or if I ever catch wind of you whispering venom about my wife, I will personally ruin your social standing so thoroughly you won't even be able to rent a cottage in the slums of London.”

Clara’s face turned the color of ash. She stared at the legal documents in sheer, unadulterated horror, realizing that her decades-long campaign to leech off the Blackthorn fortune had just been obliterated in thirty seconds. She grabbed her furs, burst into tears, and fled the drawing room without uttering another word.

When Alexander returned upstairs, he found Eleanor sitting up against the pillows, wrapped in a silk dressing gown, looking much stronger with color finally returning to her cheeks.

He walked over, sitting down on the edge of the bed, wrapping his arm securely around her waist and pulling her close against his chest.

“Clara has left,” Alexander murmured softly against her hair. “She won't ever bother us again.”

Eleanor leaned her head against his shoulder, breathing in the familiar, comforting scent of cedar and rain. “You didn't have to do that, Alexander.”

“I had to protect my heart,” he replied simply, turning her face toward his and looking deep into her eyes with a love so fierce and absolute it took her breath away. “You taught me how to feel, Eleanor. You showed me that a marriage isn't a ledger of duties and compliance; it’s a partnership built on absolute truth, rest, and unconditional devotion.”

Eleanor smiled, wrapping her arms around his neck, pulling him down for a deep, passionate kiss that sealed their destiny forever.

Fast forward one year later.

The sprawling, magnificent estate of Blackthorn Hall was more alive, vibrant, and joyful than it had ever been in its centuries of history. The cold stone corridors no longer echoed with silence and rigid discipline; instead, they echoed with laughter, music, and the bright, bouncing footsteps of a newborn baby boy—little Lord Ashford—who had inherited his mother’s radiant smile and his father’s unwavering spirit.

On a bright, beautiful Saturday afternoon in June, the rolling green lawns of the estate were filled with brilliant sunshine, blooming roses, and celebrating tenants who had gathered to toast the health and happiness of their beloved duke and duchess.

Eleanor stood on the wide stone terrace wearing a stunning, flowing emerald silk dress, holding baby Alexander in her arms while watching the festivities unfold across the lawn.

Alexander walked up behind her, wrapping his strong, warm arms around her waist, resting his chin comfortably on her shoulder as he pressed a tender kiss to her cheek.

“Penny for your thoughts, Your Grace?” Alexander murmured softly against her skin.

Eleanor turned in his embrace, looking up into her husband’s loving, devoted slate-grey eyes with a brilliant, triumphant smile.

“I was just thinking, Alexander,” she whispered, leaning in to kiss him tenderly, “that saying yes was the best decision I ever made—especially because I finally learned how to say no when I needed to.”

Alexander chuckled, a rich, warm sound of absolute satisfaction, holding his wife and his son tighter than life itself. The dark days of fear and exhaustion were buried in the past; their future was blindingly bright, and they were, at long last, completely, powerfully, and eternally safe.
