Chapter 3

And Marisol Vance?

She was no longer hiding red envelopes in a locked desk drawer.

Her desk had been cleared of administrative clutter. In its place stood a sleek, private executive workstation located directly inside Raphael Drummond’s personal penthouse office on the sixtieth floor of Drummond Tower.

It was a Friday evening. The sun was dipping below the horizon, painting the Chicago skyline in breathtaking shades of amber, violet, and deep indigo. The office was dead quiet save for the soft, rhythmic hum of the city lights waking up far below.

Marisol sat at her new desk, reviewing a series of international shipping manifests, wearing a sharp, tailored emerald blouse that hugged her curves with effortless elegance.

The private mahogany door behind her clicked open.

Raphael walked in. He had discarded his suit jacket, his white dress shirt open at the collar, looking magnificent and dangerously imposing in the fading twilight. He walked across the plush Persian rug, stopped behind her chair, and leaned down, resting his hands on the armrests, trapping her safely in his embrace.

“Working late again, Miss Vance?” Raphael teased softly against her ear, his deep baritone sending a delightful, electric shiver straight down her spine.

“Someone has to make sure your shipping empire doesn't accidentally run itself off a cliff, Mr. Drummond,” she replied smoothly, tilting her head back to look up into his striking, dark eyes.

A rare, breathtaking smile touched the corners of Raphael’s mouth. For two years, he had maintained a strict, icy professional distance, terrified that emotional attachments would become a weakness. Now, looking down at the curvy, brilliant secretary who had breached his fortress not with violence, but with fierce loyalty and unshakable courage, he knew she wasn't a weakness at all.

She was his greatest strength.

“My empire was running on fumes before you walked into this building, Marisol,” Raphael murmured, his voice dropping into a low, husky register that made her heart hammer against her ribs. He reached out, his warm fingers gently tracing the line of her jawline, tilting her face upward. “I built my entire life on distance. I thought keeping people at arm’s length would keep me safe from betrayal. But the moment those red envelopes landed on your desk... I realized I didn't want safety anymore. I wanted you.”

Marisol’s breath hitched. All the walls she had built around her heart—the exhaustion of raising her brother, the constant struggle for survival, the fear of relying on anyone else—suddenly crumbled away.

“Raphael...” she whispered, her voice thick with longing.

He didn't make her wait another second.

Raphael leaned down and captured her lips in a deep, hungry, consuming kiss. It wasn't the tentative touch of an employer and employee; it was the fierce, passionate collision of two souls who had finally found their permanent sanctuary in a chaotic world.

Marisol’s hands flew up to loop around his neck, pulling him closer as Raphael’s strong arms swept her effortlessly out of her chair, lifting her against his solid, powerful chest.

The spreadsheets, the shipping schedules, and the dangerous shadows of the underworld vanished entirely. Inside the penthouse fortress of the most feared man in Chicago, they were completely, powerfully, and eternally invincible.
