CHAPTER 4 — The Senator’s Gambit

The calm in the greenhouse didn't last. The Senator was a politician, and politicians did not accept humiliation easily. A week later, I was watching the news when a headline flashed across the screen: "INVESTIGATION LAUNCHED INTO CROSS SHIPPING LOGISTICS."

It was a blatant, desperate smear campaign. The Senator was using his influence to force a regulatory audit on Damon’s companies, hoping to find something—tax discrepancies, labor violations, anything—that would justify a legal strike.

Damon was in the study when I walked in, his face lit by the blue glow of several monitors. He was already working, his jaw tight.

"I saw the news," I said, closing the door behind me.

"The Senator is throwing a tantrum," Damon said, not looking away from the screen. "He thinks if he makes enough noise, the authorities will eventually find a loose thread. He doesn't understand that I built my infrastructure to be audit-proof."

"But it will cause a scandal," I said. "It will make things difficult."

"Difficult is my natural state," he said with a grim smile. "However, this is an overreach. He’s using his public office for a private vendetta. I have enough documentation on his own campaign contributions to ensure he never sits in the Senate again."

I sat in the chair opposite him. "Why haven't you used it yet?"

"Because I wanted to see if he would cross the line of professional decorum. He has. Now, I have grounds to initiate a federal inquiry into his office."

"Damon, this is going to turn into a war."

"It has been a war since the day I met you, Maya. He just didn't know he was losing."

He stood up, walking around the desk. He didn't look like a man about to be defeated. He looked like a man who had finally been given the green light to destroy an obstacle he had been tolerating for too long.

"Stay inside for the next few days," he ordered, his tone firm. "I want my men to increase the watch. When I strip the Senator of his power, he will be dangerous. Desperate men are the ones who make mistakes."

"Are you going to be safe?"

He chuckled, a dark, low sound. "I am the safest person in this city. You are the one I am worried about. I am pulling the rug out from under him, Maya. When the house of cards falls, I don't want you anywhere near the debris."

May you like

He kissed my forehead, his hand brushing the hair from my face. "Trust me. I am going to end this."

I watched him walk out of the room, his black suit coat over his arm. He was a force of nature, a hurricane contained in a tuxedo. I didn't worry that he would lose. I worried that he would win, and in doing so, he would lose even more of the softness I had spent months nurturing. But I knew that in his world, softness was a luxury he couldn't afford until the enemies were gone.
