Chapter 3 - The Mafia Boss Set Me Free Instead of Making Our Fake Engagement Real—One Year Later, I Found the Last Secret His Family Had Hidden and Chose Whether I Still Wanted His NameDating Adrian Moretti was ridiculous.

Their first date lasted forty-three minutes before one of Elena's clients called because a wedding venue had lost electricity.
Adrian drove her there.
Then spent four hours carrying battery-powered lights while Elena reorganized an entire reception.
At two in the morning, the bride hugged Elena.
Then hugged Adrian.
He looked horrified.
Elena laughed until her stomach hurt.
Their second date went better.
Their third ended with Elena discovering Adrian had secretly assigned security to follow her.
She was furious.
"Safety."
"No."
"Elena—"
"No."
He removed the security.
Two weeks later, Elena asked for one guard back after a journalist followed Chloe home.
Adrian didn't say I told you so.
That might have been when Elena realized he was actually learning.
Six months passed.
Belladonna Estate changed.
Sofia remained terrifying.
Marco started dating Chloe.
Adrian complained constantly.
Nobody cared.
More importantly, Adrian dismantled the illegal pieces of the Moretti organization.
Some men left peacefully.
Others didn't.
Federal cooperation protected him from several charges but not every consequence.
He paid enormous fines.
Lost businesses.
Lost influence.
Received threats.
For the first time since his teens, Adrian Moretti became less powerful.
And happier.
Elena noticed that too.
She expanded her event company.
Not with Moretti money.
Her choice.
Adrian offered investment once.
She declined.
He never offered again.
Then, eleven months after she woke in his bed, Elena received a package.
No return address.
Inside was a key.
And a note in Dominic's handwriting.
Ask Sofia what Lorenzo hid beneath Belladonna.
Elena showed Adrian.
He didn't hide it.
Didn't tell her not to worry.
Didn't quietly investigate without her.
He called Sofia.
They searched together.
Beneath Belladonna Estate was an old wine cellar.
Behind one wall, they found a steel door.
The key opened it.
Inside were records.
Hundreds.
Decades of Moretti history.
Payments.
Blackmail.
Photographs.
Names.
Enough evidence to destroy reputations across Boston.
Adrian stared.
Sofia whispered:
"Your grandfather's archive."
Elena looked at Adrian.
"What do you want to do?"
Old Adrian would have burned it.
She knew that.
He knew that.
Instead:
"Call Sloan."
The FBI arrived.
The archive became evidence.
Several retired officials were investigated.
Old crimes reopened.
Families finally learned what happened to missing relatives.
The Moretti name became national news.
Adrian didn't run.
He testified.
For three days.
On the final day, a reporter shouted:
"Mr. Moretti, do you regret destroying your family's legacy?"
Adrian stopped.
Elena stood several feet away.
He looked toward her.
Then answered:
"No."
The reporter shouted another question.
Adrian continued walking.
That night, Elena found him sitting on the steps of Belladonna Estate.
"You okay?"
"No."
She sat beside him.
"Want to talk?"
"No."
"Want me to leave?"
He looked at her.
"No."
So she stayed.
Sometimes love wasn't fixing.
Sometimes it was sitting beside someone while they learned to live with what couldn't be fixed.
A month later, Belladonna Estate was sold.
Adrian didn't need a fortress anymore.
Sofia moved into a townhouse and complained about the neighbors.
Marco and Chloe got engaged.
Adrian nearly had a stroke.
Elena enjoyed every second.
Then came the anniversary.
One year since the night Elena accidentally fell asleep in Adrian's bedroom.
She was coordinating a charity gala at a restored waterfront hotel.
At eleven thirty, her feet hurt.
History.
She slipped upstairs.
Found an empty bedroom.
Lay down.
Five minutes.
She smiled.
The door opened.
Adrian entered.
"Absolutely not."
Elena laughed.
"What?"
"I know how this ends."
He sat beside her.
"No guards?"
"Outside."
"No enemies?"
"Probably several."
"Comforting."
"No fake engagement?"
He looked at her.
"Not unless requested."
Elena sat up.
Adrian wore a black suit.
His wolf tattoo showed slightly beneath his cuff.
She touched it.
"The first thing I saw."
"What?"
"Your tattoo."
"Not my devastatingly handsome face?"
"You were asleep."
"Still devastating."
"Debatable."
He smiled.
Then became nervous.
Adrian Moretti.
Nervous.
Elena immediately knew.
"No."
His face fell.
"I haven't done anything."
"You're about to."
"Possibly."
"Adrian."
He stood.
Then, instead of kneeling, he held out his hand.
"Come with me."
"Where?"
"Downstairs."
The ballroom was empty.
The event had ended.
Staff were cleaning.
Elena stared.
"What is this?"
"No audience."
"Good."
"No family."
"Even better."
"No armed men."
"Excellent."
Adrian reached into his pocket.
The same ring.
His mother's.
"Last year, I told everyone you were my fiancée without asking."
Elena smiled slightly.
"One of your poorer decisions."
"Top five."
"Top three."
"Fair."
He looked at her.
"I thought protection meant deciding for people."
Her smile disappeared.
"I thought loving someone meant keeping danger away from them, even if that meant controlling where they went, what they knew, and what choices they were allowed to make."
He breathed.
"My father spent his last days trying to free me from that world."
Adrian looked around the empty ballroom.
"You finished what he started."
"We finished it."
He nodded.
"We did."
Then he went down on one knee.
Elena's heart hammered.
"No fake story."
"No."
"No guards telling people before I answer?"
"I confiscated Marco's phone."
She laughed.
"No family expectations?"
"Grandmother was specifically threatened."
"Good."
Adrian opened the box.
"Elena Brooks, I don't need you to make me stronger."
His voice softened.
"I don't need you as leverage, protection, reputation, alliance, or anything else men in my family used marriage for."
Her eyes filled.
"I just love you."
Silence.
"And if your answer is no, I will stand up, take you home, and probably ask again in six months because I'm persistent."
She laughed through tears.
"But I want the choice to be yours."
Elena looked at him.
At the man who had once announced their engagement without permission.
The man who now waited.
No command.
No assumption.
No claim.
A question.
She smiled.
"Yes."
Adrian stopped breathing.
"Yes?"
"Yes."
He stood.
She kissed him before he could say anything else.
They married four months later.
Not at Belladonna.
That life was gone.
Elena chose a small vineyard outside Boston.
One hundred guests.
Sofia complained it was too small.
Elena reminded her she was lucky to be invited.
Sofia laughed.
Chloe was maid of honor.
Marco stood beside Adrian.
Agent Sloan received an invitation.
She actually came.
At the reception, Adrian found Elena standing alone beneath string lights.
"Tired?"
"My feet hurt."
He smiled.
"There's a bedroom upstairs."
She narrowed her eyes.
"Don't."
"Five minutes."
"Absolutely not."
He laughed.
They danced instead.
Adrian was terrible.
Elena hadn't known that.
"You're stepping on me."
"I'm trying."
"You're a Mafia boss who survived three assassination attempts."
"Former Mafia boss."
"You can't waltz?"
"Different skill set."
She laughed.
"One, two, three."
He followed.
Badly.
But he followed.
Three years later, Elena Brooks Moretti owned one of Boston's most successful private-event companies.
She kept Brooks professionally.
Adrian liked that.
He founded a legitimate maritime-security company with Marco and created a foundation for families affected by organized crime.
Sofia became honorary chairwoman.
Nobody had been foolish enough to vote against her.
Chloe and Marco had a daughter.
Adrian spoiled her terribly.
Then Elena became pregnant.
A girl.
They named her Lucia Michael Moretti.
Michael for Elena's father.
Lucia for Adrian's mother.
On their daughter's first birthday, Elena stood inside their kitchen watching Adrian attempt to decorate a cake.
It was terrible.
"You could have hired someone."
"I married an event planner."
"Exactly. I know professionals."
He looked offended.
Lucia slapped frosting onto his shirt.
Elena laughed.
Adrian picked up their daughter.
The black wolf tattoo stretched across his forearm.
Same tattoo.
Different life.
Sometimes Elena still thought about that first morning.
She had awakened terrified because she believed she'd made the biggest professional mistake of her life.
She thought she'd fallen asleep in the wrong room.
She hadn't understood that the room itself was part of a world Adrian had spent his entire life trapped inside.
A world built from inherited violence, secrets, loyalty, and fear.
Neither of them had escaped it cleanly.
People rarely do.
But they had escaped.
Not because Adrian saved Elena.
Not because Elena changed Adrian through love.
That would have been too simple.
Adrian changed because he finally accepted responsibility for the man he wanted to become.
Elena survived because she refused to surrender her choices simply because a powerful man promised protection.
They met in the middle.
By choice.
That evening, after Lucia fell asleep, Adrian found Elena standing beside their bedroom window.
He wrapped his arms around her waist.
She smiled.
"Careful."
"Why?"
"This is how the trouble started."
"No."
His chin rested on her shoulder.
"The trouble started when you trespassed in my bedroom."
"I was working."
"You stole my bed."
"I was exhausted."
"You stole my shirt."
"Your housekeeper gave me the shirt."
"You stole my grandmother."
"She likes me better."
"Unfortunately true."
Elena turned in his arms.
"Do you ever regret it?"
"What?"
"Losing Belladonna. The organization. All that power."
Adrian thought for a moment.
Then looked toward the hallway where their daughter slept.
"No."
"Never?"
"Sometimes I miss believing I could control everything."
Elena raised an eyebrow.
"Therapy helped."
"Clearly."
He smiled.
"But control wasn't safety."
"No."
"It was just fear wearing an expensive suit."
Elena laughed softly.
"That's annoyingly insightful."
"I've grown."
"Marginally."
He kissed her forehead.
Elena looked down at the wedding ring on her finger.
The first time Adrian Moretti called her his fiancée, the word had been a lie invented to keep her alive.
The second time, he had waited for permission.
That difference contained their entire story.
Once, Adrian's world believed love meant identifying what mattered to a man so it could be protected, possessed, threatened, or traded.
Elena and Adrian learned something else.
Love wasn't a claim.
It wasn't leverage.
It wasn't protection forced upon someone who never asked for it.
Love was a choice that remained a choice every morning after.
And that was why, years after waking terrified in the forbidden bedroom of Boston's most feared Mafia boss, Elena could lie beside the same man, feel his tattooed arm settle gently around her waist, and smile when he quietly asked:
"Okay?"
She covered his hand with hers.
"Okay."
Outside, Boston glittered beneath the night sky.
No guards stood beyond their bedroom door.
No enemies waited downstairs.
No family empire dictated what tomorrow had to become.
There was only Adrian.
Elena.
Their sleeping daughter.
And a life neither of them had inherited.
May you like
They had chosen it.
Together.
