Chapter 2

Marcus had flown back from Reno on a private charter, fully expecting to present an emergency board resolution ousting Graham as CEO due to the compromised compliance audit. He sat at the head of the opposing side of the table, tapping a silver fountain pen against a leather-bound folio.

“Well, Graham,” Marcus began, his voice dripping with condescending amusement as the double doors clicked shut. “It’s unfortunate about the security breach at your Las Vegas hotel. I understand federal investigators are already reviewing the leaked transit logs. As per Section 9 of the corporate bylaws, a compromised chief executive whose direct data files are breached by external bad actors must immediately step down pending an ethics review.”

Around the table, several allied board members shifted uncomfortably, waiting for the axe to fall.

Graham didn't flinch. He sat in his customary high-backed leather chair at the center, his posture relaxed, his expression carved from absolute ice. He didn't even look at Marcus; he was reviewing a tablet containing the morning’s shipping manifests.

“Thank you for your concern, Uncle Marcus,” Graham said smoothly, his voice a deep, resonant baritone that commanded absolute silence across the room. “However, Section 9 of the bylaws contains a very specific statutory exemption regarding confidential marital communications and executive asset protection.”

Marcus’s pen stopped tapping. His eyebrows furrowed. “What are you talking about?”

I sat directly to Graham’s right, wearing a sharp charcoal pantsuit, my hair styled in a sleek professional blowout, my left hand resting casually on the table so the platinum wedding band caught the overhead light.

Graham slowly raised his gaze, locking his intense eyes onto his uncle. “Allow me to introduce my wife, Avery Reed. We were legally wed in Clark County, Nevada, four days ago. Because Avery’s encrypted audit files and personal notes are now protected under federal and state spousal privilege, any attempt by this board to subpoena her private records or question her regarding the Vegas incident constitutes an illegal violation of marital immunity.”

The color drained instantly from Marcus Reed’s face. He slammed both hands flat against the mahogany table, half-rising from his chair. “You married your analyst?! Are you out of your mind? This is a transparent, desperate legal sham designed to bypass board oversight!”

“Feel free to challenge the validity of our marriage in front of a federal family court judge, Marcus,” Graham countered, his voice dropping into a lethal, freezing register that made the seasoned corporate raider recoil. “I promise you, our marriage certificate is fully notarized, completely legal, and backed by a prenuptial agreement that irrevocably ties my voting shares to my wife’s protective oversight. If you touch her, you declare war on me. And unlike past board disputes, I won't be using lawyers.”

Silence descended upon the boardroom—a heavy, suffocating quiet where nobody dared to breathe. Marcus realized with sudden, terrifying clarity that his multi-million-dollar hostile takeover had just smashed headfirst into an impenetrable legal and personal wall. Graham hadn't just saved his company; he had weaponized our sudden union to shield me from the very wolves who had hunted us in Las Vegas.

“This meeting is adjourned,” Graham stated, standing up from his chair and straightening his suit jacket. He looked down at me, offering a subtle, approving nod. “Come, Avery. We have an acquisition to finalize.”

As we walked out of the boardroom together, the heavy oak doors closing behind us, my heart was racing a million miles an hour. Back in the private safety of Graham’s executive office, the cool, untouchable Ice King finally let out a long, shuddering breath, rubbing the bridge of his nose with his thumb and forefinger.

“Did I handle that with sufficient corporate coldness?” Graham asked dryly, looking over at me with a faint, wry smile playing at the corners of his mouth.

I couldn't help the laugh that bubbled up from my chest. “Sufficient? Graham, you practically threatened to feed your uncle to sharks in the middle of a Fortune 500 board meeting.”

“Only if he tries to hurt you,” Graham said softly, crossing the room to stand directly in front of me. The teasing edge vanished from his voice, replaced by an overwhelming, raw intensity that made my breath catch. He reached out, his warm fingers gently brushing a stray lock of hair behind my ear, his thumb tracing the curve of my cheekbone. “I meant every word in that boardroom, Avery. When I saw those men outside your hotel room door in Vegas... I realized that all the money, all the power, and all the infrastructure in the world meant nothing if I couldn't keep you safe.”

I stared up into his slate-grey eyes, feeling the protective devotion burning beneath his controlled exterior. The Vegas wedding might have started as a desperate corporate shield, but standing here in his office, I knew the truth: I had fallen completely and irrevocably in love with the Ice King.

“And what about after the corporate audit is cleared, Graham?” I whispered, my voice trembling slightly as his hand slid down to gently cup my jaw. “What happens to our sham marriage then?”

Graham’s gaze darkened with fierce, absolute conviction. “Who said anything about a sham?”
