Chapter 4
The silence that followed my statement was thick,
heavy,
and suffocating for the three people who had spent their entire lives breathing the rarified air of unearned privilege.
Brendan looked from Arthur to the security guards,
then finally down at the gold-stamped document resting on the ruined dinner table.
"This can't be legal,"
he stammered,
his hands dropping to his sides as his anger began to mutate into sheer,
unadulterated desperation.
"You can't just evict my mother from her home on a Sunday night,
the law requires a thirty-day notice for tenancy!"
Arthur let out a brief,
dry chuckle that contained absolutely no warmth.
"Under normal circumstances,
yes,
Mr. Morrison,
but this property is registered as a corporate hospitality asset,
not a private residence."
"Your mother has been residing here under a temporary executive occupancy permit provided as a perk of your employment."
"Since your employment was terminated for cause exactly seven minutes ago,
the occupancy permit expired exactly six minutes ago."
"Furthermore,
the internal security cameras of this estate—which are routed directly to the corporate security grid—have just uploaded a high-definition recording of your mother committing a physical assault on the majority shareholder."
Arthur tapped the screen of his tablet,
showing a frozen frame of Diane holding the bucket of dirty ice water directly above my head.
"In cases where an occupant poses a direct physical threat to an executive officer of the parent company,"
Arthur explained,
his voice dripping with professional satisfaction,
"the corporate security detail is legally mandated to clear the premises immediately to prevent further liability."
Diane’s face went from pale to completely translucent,
her hands shaking so violently that her sapphire rings clicked against each other.
"An assault?"
she whispered,
her voice trembling with a mixture of terror and deep humiliation.
"It was a joke!
It was just a bit of water,
she was being dramatic,
she always plays the victim!"
"The corporate legal team does not find the intentional drenching of a pregnant woman in freezing water on a cold night to be humorous,
Mrs. Morrison,"
I said,
my voice steady,
calm,
and entirely devoid of pity.
"My doctor has repeatedly told me that sudden physical shock can induce premature labor."
"You didn't just play a joke on your ex-daughter-in-law,
Diane;
you endangered the life of the future heir to the sovereign trust."
The moment the words future heir left my mouth,
Brendan’s eyes widened,
and he took a sharp,
hissing breath.
"The baby,"
he whispered,
looking down at my stomach as if seeing it clearly for the very first time.
"If that child is mine...
then I have paternal rights,
I have a claim to a portion of whatever trust fund he inherits!"
He took a desperate step forward,
his hands outstretched as if he wanted to touch the coat wrapped around me.
"Cassidy,
please,
we can talk about this,
we were married for four years,
we built a life together,
we shouldn't let a small family argument destroy everything!"
Jessica snapped her head toward him,
her face twisted in disgust.
"A small family argument?
You just laughed while your mother poured garbage water on her!"
"Shut up,
Jessica!"
Brendan snapped,
not even looking at her as he kept his eyes locked on me,
trying to project a remorseful expression that looked entirely fake.
"Cassidy,
honey,
I was just caught up in the moment,
you know how my mother gets,
I was scared to stand up to her,
but I love you,
I want to be a father to our son!"
"Your paternal rights were addressed in the divorce decree you fought so hard to finalize last month,
Brendan,"
I said,
my tone cooler than the water still dripping from my hair.
"You insisted on a clause that explicitly stated you would have zero custody and zero visitation rights if you were absolved of paying any significant child support."
"You signed away your right to be a father for the price of a monthly luxury car payment."
"And tomorrow morning,"
I added,
May you like
turning toward the front door,
"the world will find out exactly what kind of man you really are."
