Chapter 4 - Claire Learned the Same Man Behind the Mafia Wife’s Murder Had Targeted Her Son—Then Adrian Walked Into His Own Mansion Unarmed to End the War Without Losing Another ChildClaire did not cry.

That frightened Adrian more than tears would have.

She stared at Eli’s photograph on the screen.

“My father had that buried with him.”

Marcus nodded.

“The grave was disturbed six months ago.”

Claire’s face became empty.

Adrian knew that emptiness.

He had lived inside it after Elena.

“Claire.”

She stood.

“I’m killing him.”

“No.”

She looked at Adrian.

“You don’t get to tell me no.”

“Yes, I do.”

“Why?”

“Because four hours ago you told me Elena didn’t want grief turning me into a monster.”

“That was different.”

“No.”

Adrian stepped closer.

“It never feels the same when it’s your grief.”

Claire stared.

Then hit him.

Hard.

Across the face.

Marcus looked away.

Adrian did not react.

Claire hit his chest next.

“You don’t understand.”

He caught her wrists.

“I understand exactly.”

She struggled.

“My son was five!”

“And Emma was three when she watched her mother die!”

Claire froze.

Adrian released her.

“I want Matteo dead.”

His voice shook.

“I want Victor dead.”

Another breath.

“If Lawrence killed Elena and Eli, I want him to understand pain before he dies.”

Claire stared.

“But my daughters have spent three years living with what revenge turned me into.”

He looked toward the bedroom.

“I’m not giving them another version of that man.”

Claire’s anger cracked.

She cried.

Adrian held her.

Not romantically.

Not possessively.

Simply because she could no longer stand alone.

They reconstructed Lawrence’s plan.

The Vale humanitarian network gave him access to experimental medications, unregistered clinics and conflict zones.

Matteo supplied weapons.

Victor supplied transport.

Lawrence supplied legitimacy.

Eli died because Claire discovered irregular medical shipments.

The bombing that killed him was intended to kill her too.

Elena later found the same network.

She died for the same reason.

Adrian’s father discovered pieces years earlier.

Lawrence arranged medication that worsened his heart condition.

Murder disguised as natural death.

The conspiracy stretched back more than a decade.

“What does he want now?” Marcus asked.

Adrian looked at the ledger.

“Control.”

Claire shook her head.

“No. Men like my father don’t want money once they have enough.”

“What then?”

“To prove he’s right.”

“About?”

“That everyone has a price.”

Claire understood Lawrence.

“He’ll want us at Ashford House.”

Marcus frowned.

“Why?”

“Because Adrian built the house as a fortress. Lawrence took it in one night.”

She looked at Adrian.

“He wants you to see that power never belonged to you.”

Adrian almost smiled.

“Then we disappoint him.”

The plan was simple.

Which meant it was probably terrible.

Adrian would return alone.

Unarmed.

Lawrence believed Claire was emotionally broken.

Claire would enter through Elena’s hidden drainage route.

Federal agents waited nearby.

Adrian had spent his adult life avoiding law enforcement.

Tonight he called them himself.

That was how badly he wanted his daughters to inherit something different.

Before leaving, he spoke to each child.

Ava sat upright.

“You’re going back.”

“Yes.”

“Can I come?”

“No.”

“I knew you’d say that.”

Adrian kissed her forehead.

“I’m proud of you.”

“For getting shot?”

“For surviving without pretending you weren’t afraid.”

Ava’s eyes filled.

He went to Harper.

She hugged him before he spoke.

“Don’t do the dramatic goodbye.”

“I wasn’t.”

“You were.”

“Fine.”

He kissed her hair.

Then Emma.

She held a drawing.

Five people.

Adrian.

Ava.

Harper.

Emma.

Claire.

He stared.

“Who’s that?”

Emma pointed at Claire as though he were stupid.

“I know. I was checking.”

Emma smiled.

Then whispered:

“Claire stays?”

Adrian looked across the room.

Claire heard.

Her expression changed.

“That’s Claire’s choice.”

Emma considered.

“Ask her.”

Adrian almost laughed.

“I will.”

Emma hugged him.

“Come home.”

“I will.”

Ashford House was dark when Adrian entered.

He removed his coat.

Raised his hands.

“No weapon.”

Victor searched him.

Matteo waited in the study.

Julian sat tied to a chair.

Alive.

Lawrence Whitman stood near the fireplace.

Sixty-three.

Silver-haired.

Elegant.

He looked like a respected surgeon.

Not a monster.

Adrian hated that.

“Mr. Vale.”

“Doctor.”

Lawrence smiled.

“You brought no army.”

“I brought myself.”

“Exactly as Elena once did.”

Adrian’s jaw tightened.

Lawrence enjoyed it.

“You loved her.”

“Yes.”

“Love makes intelligent people predictable.”

“So does arrogance.”

Lawrence smiled.

“Claire said that as a teenager.”

Adrian’s pulse shifted.

“Where is she?”

“Safe.”

“Does she know what you did to Eli?”

For the first time, Lawrence’s expression changed.

“I did not kill my grandson.”

“You funded the clinic bombing.”

“I funded an operation. The bombing was Matteo’s decision.”

Matteo turned.

“Careful.”

Interesting.

Cracks.

Adrian looked at Matteo.

“Lawrence is preparing to blame you.”

“Shut up.”

Lawrence smiled.

“He’s manipulating you.”

Adrian shrugged.

“Probably.”

Victor entered.

“Perimeter clear.”

Adrian looked at him.

“You shot Ava.”

Victor’s face hardened.

“She saw too much.”

“She’s seventeen.”

“She’s your daughter. That makes her dangerous.”

Adrian wanted to kill him.

Instead he remembered Elena.

Our daughters need their father.

He smiled.

Victor frowned.

“What?”

“You’re going to prison.”

Matteo laughed.

“You think police are coming here?”

“Yes.”

Silence.

Lawrence looked toward the windows.

Then smiled.

“No signal leaves this property.”

“Correct.”

Adrian looked toward the antique clock.

“But Elena installed a hard line you never found.”

Lawrence’s smile disappeared.

Behind the wall, Claire listened.

Every word was transmitting.

She moved toward the study.

Then heard a sound.

A child crying.

Claire stopped.

No.

She opened a side door.

Harper stood there.

Victor’s man held a gun against her.

Claire’s blood froze.

Harper whispered:

“I’m sorry.”

She had followed them.

Of course.

Adrian’s daughter.

Stubborn.

The guard dragged Harper into the study.

Adrian’s face changed.

Everything collapsed.

Lawrence smiled again.

“Children complicate plans.”

Adrian looked at Harper.

She was terrified.

“Let her go.”

“Ledger.”

Adrian had brought a copy.

Lawrence wanted the original.

Claire stepped into the doorway.

“Take me.”

Lawrence turned.

His face softened.

“Claire.”

She pointed her gun at him.

“Let Harper go.”

“My daughter.”

“No.”

His smile faded.

“You always were ungrateful.”

“You bombed my clinic.”

“I built your career.”

“You destroyed my son.”

“I tried to protect you.”

Claire laughed.

There it was.

The same sentence.

Protection.

Used by men who believed control became love if they said the word gently enough.

“You don’t know what protection is.”

Lawrence’s eyes hardened.

“You think Vale does?”

Claire looked at Adrian.

“No.”

Adrian almost smiled.

Claire continued.

“But he’s learning.”

Lawrence pulled a gun.

Everything happened at once.

Harper dropped.

Adrian tackled Victor.

Julian kicked Matteo’s knee.

Claire fired.

Lawrence fired.

A bullet struck Claire’s shoulder.

She fell.

Adrian roared.

He reached Lawrence first.

His hands closed around the older man’s throat.

Lawrence smiled even while choking.

“There he is.”

Adrian froze.

“There’s the monster Elena married.”

Adrian looked at Claire.

Bleeding.

Conscious.

She shook her head.

Don’t.

Adrian released Lawrence.

Federal agents stormed the room.

Victor was arrested.

Matteo tried to run.

Julian tripped him.

Lawrence remained on the floor laughing.

“You think this changes what you are?”

Adrian looked down.

“No.”

Lawrence blinked.

Adrian continued.

“I change what I am.”

Agents pulled Lawrence away.

Adrian ran to Claire.

She pressed one hand against her shoulder.

“Through-and-through.”

“You’re bleeding.”

“I’ve noticed.”

“Hospital.”

“Yes.”

Harper crawled beside them.

“Claire?”

“I’m okay.”

Harper burst into tears.

Claire pulled her close with one arm.

Adrian looked at them.

Then Julian.

His brother sat against the wall.

“I’m sorry.”

Adrian stared.

Julian had betrayed him.

Helped criminals.

Hidden Elena’s investigation.

But he had also tried to warn her.

People were complicated.

Claire had been right.

“You testify.”

Julian nodded.

“You tell everything.”

“Yes.”

“You accept whatever happens.”

“Yes.”

Adrian looked at his brother.

“Then maybe someday we talk about forgiveness.”

Julian cried.

“That’s more than I deserve.”

“Probably.”

Hours later, Claire woke in St. Ambrose Hospital.

Adrian sat beside her.

She blinked.

“You look terrible.”

“So do you.”

“I was shot.”

“I had a difficult evening.”

Claire smiled.

Then winced.

“Harper?”

“Fine.”

“Ava?”

“Complaining.”

“Emma?”

“Asked for you fourteen times.”

Claire’s eyes softened.

“Fourteen?”

“I counted.”

“Why?”

“I had nothing else to do.”

Claire studied him.

“What happened to Lawrence?”

“Custody.”

“You didn’t kill him.”

“No.”

“Matteo?”

“Custody.”

“Victor?”

“Custody.”

Claire smiled faintly.

“Elena would be proud.”

Adrian looked away.

Claire touched his hand.

“Adrian.”

He faced her.

“I don’t know what happens after this.”

“Neither do I.”

“I’m still your employee.”

“No.”

She frowned.

“You fired me?”

“Yes.”

“I got shot helping your family.”

“Terrible performance review.”

Claire laughed and immediately regretted it.

“Ow.”

Adrian almost smiled.

Then became serious.

“You’re not the maid.”

“I know.”

“You never were.”

Claire waited.

“I want you to stay.”

Her expression changed.

“With the girls?”

“With me.”

Silence.

Adrian continued.

“But I don’t want an answer while you’re injured.”

“That is unexpectedly healthy.”

“I’ve had a difficult week.”

Claire smiled.

He stood.

“Rest.”

“Adrian?”

He turned.

Claire held out her hand.

He took it.

“Ask me again when I’m standing.”

He nodded.

“I will.”

For the first time in three years, Adrian Vale walked out of a hospital without planning revenge.

Behind him, Claire slept.

Ahead of him waited three daughters who needed their father.

And for the first time since Elena’s death, Adrian realized surviving tragedy did not require building his life around the grave.

May you like

It might require something much harder.

Learning how to live again.
