Chapter 3 - She Thought She Was Only a Maid—Until the Mafia Boss Discovered Her Dead Husband Had Left Her the Evidence That Could Destroy Two Families

They did not go to the Ricci estate alone.
Lorenzo had promised only that Sophia could come.
He had never promised to obey kidnappers.
Marco positioned teams through the woods surrounding the abandoned property.
Michael insisted on coming.
Lorenzo refused twice.
Michael came anyway.
“I'm trying to repair my mistake.”
“You can repair it by staying alive.”
“That's rich coming from you.”
Sophia stood between them.
“Are you always like this?”
Both brothers answered simultaneously.
“No.”
Marco laughed.
Sophia shook her head.
For the first time in days, fear loosened enough for something almost normal to exist.
Then Lorenzo looked at Sophia.
“You don't have to do this.”
“Yes, I do.”
“No. You want to.”
She paused.
He was right.
There was a difference.
“I want to.”
He nodded.
“Then stay beside me.”
The Ricci estate had been empty publicly for four years.
Privately, electricity still worked.
Security cameras tracked their arrival.
The front door opened before they reached it.
Valentina stood inside.
No bruises.
No restraints.
Not kidnapped.
Lorenzo wasn't surprised.
Sophia was.
“You planned the attack.”
Valentina smiled.
“Not personally.”
“You tried to kill my daughter.”
Valentina's smile disappeared.
“The gas was supposed to frighten you.”
“Lena stopped breathing.”
“For seconds.”
Sophia moved before she thought.
Lorenzo caught her arm.
Not roughly.
“Not yet.”
Sophia stared at Valentina.
“One day nobody will be standing between us.”
Valentina laughed.
“The maid has teeth.”
Sophia's expression hardened.
“My name is Sophia.”
Something in her voice made Valentina stop smiling.
A man appeared behind her.
Seventy.
Tall.
Silver-haired.
Vittorio Ricci.
Supposedly dead four years.
Lorenzo looked unsurprised.
“Vittorio.”
“Lorenzo.”
“Where is my mother?”
“Alive.”
“Show me.”
“First, Bellini.”
Sophia stiffened.
Lorenzo stepped in front of her.
“No.”
Vittorio smiled.
“You've become sentimental.”
“I've become impatient.”
“She has something that belongs to me.”
Sophia frowned.
“I don't.”
“You do.”
“What?”
“Daniel's ledger.”
Sophia stopped breathing.
“I don't know what you're talking about.”
Vittorio studied her.
“He never told you.”
“No.”
“How disappointing.”
Lorenzo looked at Sophia.
She was genuinely confused.
Vittorio continued.
“Your husband spent eighteen months tracing our accounts.”
“Why?”
“Because Alessandra hired him.”
Lorenzo froze.
“My mother knew Daniel?”
“Very well.”
Sophia shook her head.
“Daniel never mentioned her.”
“He was protecting you.”
The words hurt.
Everyone had been protecting everyone.
And somehow people kept dying.
Vittorio gestured.
“Come inside.”
Lorenzo didn't move.
“My mother.”
A side door opened.
An elderly woman appeared.
Lorenzo stopped breathing.
Alessandra Moretti.
Older.
Thinner.
Alive.
Michael made a sound behind them.
“Mom?”
Her face broke.
“My boys.”
Michael moved first.
Lorenzo grabbed him.
“Wait.”
Michael struggled.
“That's our mother.”
“It may also be a trap.”
Alessandra looked at Lorenzo.
“You always were the cautious one.”
His face changed.
Only his mother would know the sadness behind that sentence.
He released Michael.
Michael crossed the room.
Alessandra held him.
She cried.
Then looked at Lorenzo.
He remained still.
Twelve years.
Birthdays.
Funerals.
Wars.
Every terrible decision he'd made because there was no mother to ask whether he was becoming his father.
“Why?” he asked.
Alessandra closed her eyes.
“Because they told me you would die if I came back.”
Lorenzo looked at Vittorio.
“You kept her prisoner?”
“Guest.”
Alessandra laughed bitterly.
“Prisoner.”
Vittorio shrugged.
“Semantics.”
Lorenzo's hand moved toward his weapon.
Sophia touched his sleeve.
He looked at her.
Not yet.
He understood.
Vittorio smiled.
“How touching.”
Lorenzo ignored him.
“Why was my mother investigating you?”
Alessandra answered.
“Your father.”
Lorenzo went still.
“My father?”
“Antonio discovered Vittorio was using Moretti shipping routes to move weapons.”
Vittorio sighed.
“Always dramatic.”
Alessandra continued.
“Your father wanted out.”
Lorenzo's world shifted.
Antonio Moretti had died fifteen years earlier from a heart attack.
At least officially.
“Did you kill him?”
Vittorio smiled.
“No.”
Lorenzo relaxed slightly.
Then Vittorio added, “I had someone else do it.”
Michael lunged.
Lorenzo caught him.
Again.
“Not yet.”
Michael screamed.
“He killed Dad!”
“I heard him.”
Sophia watched Lorenzo.
His face looked carved from stone.
But his hands were shaking.
Vittorio continued.
“Antonio became weak.”
“No,” Alessandra said. “He became decent.”
“Same thing in our world.”
Lorenzo looked at him.
“Not anymore.”
Vittorio laughed.
“You think you're different?”
“I intend to be.”
“You run the same empire.”
“For now.”
That surprised everyone.
Including Sophia.
Vittorio narrowed his eyes.
“What does that mean?”
“It means you're talking too much.”
Marco's voice sounded in Lorenzo's earpiece.
“Teams ready.”
Lorenzo smiled slightly.
Vittorio noticed.
His expression changed.
Then gunfire erupted outside.
Valentina screamed.
Ricci guards rushed toward the windows.
Lorenzo moved.
Michael grabbed Alessandra.
Marco's team breached the rear entrance.
Sophia dropped behind a marble column.
Vittorio ran.
Valentina followed.
Sophia saw something fall from Valentina's purse.
A photograph.
Daniel.
Her husband.
Sophia grabbed it.
On the back, Daniel had written:
Sophia knows where the truth is even if she doesn't know she knows.
Her heart stopped.
What did that mean?
Then she remembered.
Daniel's last birthday gift.
A music box.
For Lena.
He had insisted Sophia never sell it.
Never throw it away.
Even when the mechanism broke.
The music box sat in a storage box in Sophia's apartment.
She looked up.
Vittorio had wanted Daniel's ledger.
Daniel had hidden it.
Not somewhere Sophia knew.
Somewhere she would protect without knowing why.
“Lorenzo!”
He turned.
“I know where it is!”
A shot exploded.
Sophia fell.
For one terrible second, Lorenzo thought she'd been hit.
Then he saw Valentina holding the gun.
He fired.
Not at her.
At the weapon.
The bullet struck her hand.
She screamed.
Lorenzo reached Sophia.
“Are you hurt?”
“No.”
He checked anyway.
“I'm fine.”
“You fell.”
“People do that when guns fire.”
He stared.
She almost laughed.
“Daniel hid the ledger.”
“Where?”
“Lena's music box.”
Vittorio heard.
His face changed.
Then he ran toward a side door.
Marco tackled him.
The fight ended.
Vittorio was restrained.
Valentina sat against the wall clutching her bleeding hand.
Alessandra was safe.
Michael was crying openly.
Sophia stood.
Valentina looked at her.
“You ruined everything.”
Sophia stared.
“No.”
“What?”
“You did.”
Valentina's face twisted.
“You think Lorenzo cares about you?”
Sophia froze.
Lorenzo did too.
Valentina laughed.
“You think because he saves you, you're special?”
Sophia's face burned.
Lorenzo stepped forward.
Sophia stopped him.
“No.”
He looked at her.
“I've got this.”
He stepped back.
Sophia approached Valentina.
“I don't know what Lorenzo feels.”
Valentina smiled cruelly.
“But I know what I feel.”
Sophia crouched.
“I feel sorry for you.”
Valentina's smile disappeared.
“You had money. Power. Beauty. A man willing to marry you.”
Sophia shook her head.
“And none of it was enough because you thought power meant making everyone beneath you afraid.”
“You are beneath me.”
“No.”
Sophia smiled sadly.
“That's the part you never understood.”
Federal agents arrived thirty minutes later.
Vittorio Ricci was arrested.
Valentina was arrested too.
The recovered evidence connected them to murder, conspiracy, weapons trafficking, kidnapping, attempted murder, and decades of financial crimes.
But the most important evidence still waited inside a broken music box.
They returned to Sophia's apartment before dawn.
Lena was safe with Maria at the Moretti estate.
Sophia opened the storage closet.
The music box sat beneath winter clothes.
Pink.
Painted with tiny stars.
She wound it.
Nothing happened.
“Broken,” Lorenzo said.
“For two years.”
She removed the bottom panel.
Nothing.
Then Marco noticed one screw was newer.
He removed it.
Inside was a memory card wrapped in plastic.
Sophia began crying.
Daniel.
Even dying, he had trusted her to protect the truth.
They loaded the files.
Thousands of pages.
Transactions.
Names.
Dates.
Audio recordings.
Photographs.
And one video.
Daniel appeared on screen.
Sophia covered her mouth.
“Hi, Soph.”
Her knees weakened.
Lorenzo pulled out a chair.
She sat.
Daniel continued.
“If you're watching this, then I failed to come home.”
Sophia sobbed.
Lorenzo turned away, giving her privacy without leaving.
“I’m sorry.”
Daniel looked tired.
“I found something terrible. I wanted to tell you, but knowing would put you and Lena in danger.”
He explained everything.
Alessandra had hired him secretly.
Together they traced the Ricci operation.
When Alessandra disappeared, Daniel continued alone.
Then he learned Vittorio had ordered Antonio Moretti's death.
Daniel planned to bring evidence to federal authorities.
He never made it.
At the end, Daniel smiled.
“Sophia, none of this is your responsibility.”
She cried harder.
“Raise Lena. Laugh again. Fall in love again if you can.”
Lorenzo went still.
Sophia didn't notice.
Daniel continued.
“Don't turn my death into the end of your life.”
The video ended.
Silence.
Sophia sat crying.
Then Lorenzo placed a box of tissues beside her.
Not touching.
Just there.
She looked at him.
“I'm sorry.”
“For what?”
“This.”
“Grief isn't something you apologize for.”
She wiped her face.
“You always know what to say?”
“No.”
“What do you usually say?”
“Something threatening.”
She laughed through tears.
He smiled.
It was the first time she had seen Lorenzo Moretti truly smile.
Something changed between them.
Dangerously.
Sophia looked away first.
“Lorenzo.”
“Yes?”
“You're still technically engaged.”
“No.”
“Socially, people—”
“I ended it.”
“Hours ago.”
“Days.”
“That's not better.”
He understood.
She wasn't rejecting him.
She was establishing distance.
He respected it.
“You're right.”
Sophia looked at him.
“No argument?”
“I’m learning.”
She smiled.
Then his phone rang.
He answered.
Marco's expression appeared on the screen.
“Boss.”
“What?”
“We found something in Daniel's files.”
“Another account?”
“No.”
“A contract.”
Lorenzo frowned.
“What contract?”
Marco hesitated.
“The original order to kill Daniel Bellini.”
Sophia stopped breathing.
“Vittorio?” Lorenzo asked.
“No.”
“Valentina?”
“No.”
“Who?”
Marco looked sick.
“Your name is on it.”
Silence.
Sophia slowly turned toward Lorenzo.
May you like
And for the first time since he rescued her, fear entered her eyes when she looked at him.
