Chapter 8 - I Came Face-to-Face With the Monster Who Destroyed My Family—And My Daughter Begged Me Not to Pull the TriggerFor twenty years, I had dreamed of holding Isabella again.

Now she stood beside me, alive, trembling, and terrified of the man approaching the door.

My brother.

Adrian Moretti.

The man who had stood beside me at her funeral.

The man who had watched me mourn.

The man who had stolen my wife, hidden my daughter, and helped my mother turn our family into a prison.

His footsteps stopped outside the room.

"Vincent," he called softly. "Open the door."

Isabella gripped my arm.

"Don't."

I looked at her.

"He's not going to hurt you again."

Her eyes filled.

"You don't understand."

I squeezed her hand.

"Then tell me."

She looked toward the door.

"Adrian isn't doing this for Mother anymore."

I felt my stomach tighten.

"What?"

"He's been planning to take everything from her."

Before I could answer, the door opened.

Adrian stepped inside.

Two armed guards stood behind him.

He looked at Isabella.

Then at me.

And smiled.

"Well. Isn't this touching?"

I moved in front of my wife.

"Stay away from her."

Adrian laughed.

"Still playing the hero, Vincent?"

I stared at him.

"You kept her here."

He shrugged.

"Mother insisted."

"For twenty years."

"She was safer here."

I felt rage rising.

"Safer?"

I looked around the room.

The locked windows.

The narrow bed.

The medical equipment beside the wall.

The absence of photographs, books, or anything that suggested a normal life.

"You stole her life."

Adrian's expression hardened.

"She knew too much."

I stepped closer.

"About what?"

He smiled faintly.

"About Father."

I stopped.

My father's death.

The toxicology report.

The hidden documents.

Everything was connected.

"Tell me."

Adrian glanced at Isabella.

"She found records showing Mother had arranged his death."

My heart pounded.

"Why?"

"Because Father wanted to retire."

I stared at him.

"He wanted to leave the organization?"

Adrian nodded.

"He wanted to sell the legitimate businesses, close the illegal operations, and move to Italy."

I felt something twist inside me.

My father had spent his life building the empire.

And in the end, he wanted to walk away.

Just as I did now.

"Mother refused," Adrian continued. "She believed retirement would make the family vulnerable."

"So she killed him."

Adrian looked away.

"She arranged for his medication to be altered."

I closed my eyes.

My father.

My wife.

My daughter.

Every person I had loved had suffered because Eleanor Moretti valued power more than human life.

I opened my eyes.

"And you helped her."

Adrian's jaw tightened.

"I was young."

"You were twenty-three."

"I did what Mother told me."

I stared at him.

"That's your excuse?"

His expression hardened.

"You were always her favorite."

I laughed bitterly.

"Her favorite?"

"She gave you everything."

"She took everything from me."

Adrian stepped closer.

"You got the empire. The respect. The name. I got to clean up your messes."

I stared at him.

"Is that what this was about?"

He didn't answer.

"You destroyed my family because you wanted my position?"

Adrian's eyes flashed.

"I wanted what I deserved."

I shook my head.

"You deserved a chance to become your own man."

He laughed.

"Spoken like someone who never had to fight for anything."

I looked at Isabella.

Then back at him.

"I fought for the wrong things."

For a moment, Adrian seemed confused.

Then his expression hardened.

"Enough."

He gestured toward the guards.

"Take them downstairs."

They brought us to the main drawing room.

Eleanor sat beside the fireplace.

She looked irritated when she saw Isabella.

"Adrian," she snapped. "What is this?"

My brother smiled.

"An overdue family reunion."

Mother's eyes moved toward me.

Then Isabella.

Her expression darkened.

"You were supposed to keep her in the east wing."

Adrian shrugged.

"Plans change."

I stared at my mother.

"Twenty years."

She looked at me.

"What?"

"You stole twenty years from us."

Her expression remained cold.

"I protected the family."

I laughed.

"No. You protected your power."

Mother lifted her chin.

"Without me, this family would have collapsed."

"Maybe it should have."

The words shocked her.

For the first time, I saw genuine disbelief in her face.

"What did you say?"

I stepped closer.

"Maybe an empire built on fear and betrayal deserves to collapse."

She stared at me.

Then she laughed.

"You sound like Isabella."

I looked at my wife.

"That's the best thing you've ever said about me."

Isabella squeezed my hand.

Mother's face hardened.

"Adrian, take him away."

But Adrian didn't move.

Instead, he walked toward her.

"Actually, Mother, I think it's time you and I had a conversation."

Eleanor frowned.

"What are you doing?"

Adrian removed a folder from his briefcase.

"The transfer documents."

He placed them on the table.

"Vincent signed everything over."

Mother nodded.

"Good."

Adrian smiled.

"To me."

Her expression changed.

"What?"

"Not to the family trust. Not to you."

He leaned closer.

"To me."

Mother's eyes widened.

"That wasn't our agreement."

Adrian laughed.

"Mother, you taught me that agreements are useful only until they stop serving you."

I watched her face.

For the first time in my life, Eleanor Moretti looked afraid.

Adrian continued.

"I've spent twenty years watching you manipulate everyone around you."

He glanced at me.

"Vincent was your weapon."

Then he looked back at Mother.

"And I was your servant."

He smiled.

"Not anymore."

Eleanor gripped her cane.

"You ungrateful little—"

Adrian slammed his hand against the table.

"Enough!"

The room went silent.

He leaned toward her.

"You don't give orders anymore."

I stared at my brother.

He had learned every lesson our mother taught him.

And now he was using those lessons against her.

My phone was still gone.

Daniel's team had not yet entered the estate.

I didn't know whether they had been delayed or whether something had gone wrong.

Then Adrian turned toward me.

"There's one final matter."

I looked at him.

"Sofia."

My heart stopped.

He smiled.

"Exactly."

"Where is she?"

"On her way."

I felt rage rising.

"Adrian—"

"Relax. She's alive."

Isabella gripped my arm.

"Vincent?"

I looked at her.

"Our daughter is coming."

Her face went pale.

"No."

Adrian smiled.

"I thought a proper reunion would be appropriate."

I stepped toward him.

"If you hurt her—"

He laughed.

"You keep saying that."

I stared at him.

"Because you keep forgetting what I'm capable of."

Adrian's smile vanished.

For a moment, we stood facing each other.

Two brothers.

Raised in the same house.

Taught the same lessons.

Destroyed by the same woman.

Then a door opened.

Two guards entered.

Between them walked Sofia.

Her wrists were bound.

Her face was pale.

But she was alive.

"Dad!"

I moved toward her.

A guard blocked my path.

"Don't touch her!"

Adrian raised a hand.

"Let him."

The guard stepped aside.

I rushed forward and wrapped my arms around Sofia.

She began crying.

"I'm sorry."

I held her tightly.

"You have nothing to apologize for."

She looked over my shoulder.

Then froze.

Her eyes widened.

She stared at Isabella.

For a moment, she couldn't speak.

Then she whispered, "Mom?"

Isabella covered her mouth.

"My baby."

Sofia stepped away from me.

Her eyes filled with tears.

"No."

Isabella moved closer.

"Sofia."

Sofia shook her head.

"No. You're dead."

Isabella began crying.

"I know, sweetheart."

Sofia stared at her.

Then she looked at me.

"Dad?"

I nodded.

"It's her."

Sofia's knees weakened.

I caught her.

Isabella rushed forward.

And for the first time in twenty years, my wife held our daughter.

The sound that escaped Isabella's throat was something I will never forget.

It was grief.

Joy.

Disbelief.

And twenty years of stolen motherhood breaking open all at once.

"My baby," she sobbed.

Sofia clung to her.

"Mom."

They cried together.

I stood beside them, unable to speak.

For one impossible moment, my family was whole.

Then Adrian clapped slowly.

"Beautiful."

I turned.

He smiled.

"Now that everyone's here, we can finish this."

Adrian ordered the guards to separate us.

I stepped in front of Isabella and Sofia.

"No."

He sighed.

"Vincent, don't make this difficult."

I looked at him.

"What do you want?"

He smiled.

"Your signature was only the beginning."

I frowned.

"What else?"

"I need you to publicly announce your retirement and name me as your successor."

I stared at him.

"That's it?"

He nodded.

"And you'll leave New York permanently."

I looked at Sofia.

Then Isabella.

"Fine."

Adrian blinked.

"What?"

"I'll leave."

He looked suspicious.

"Just like that?"

I nodded.

"Take the empire. Take the money. Take the name."

I stepped closer.

"Just let my family go."

For a moment, he looked almost disappointed.

Then he smiled.

"You're serious."

"Completely."

He laughed.

"Mother was right."

I stared at him.

"About what?"

"Love makes you weak."

I shook my head.

"No, Adrian."

I looked at Sofia.

Then Isabella.

"Love finally made me strong enough to walk away."

His smile vanished.

And in that instant, I knew he would never let us leave.

Because my freedom would prove that everything he had sacrificed for power had been meaningless.

He reached inside his jacket.

Pulled out a gun.

And pointed it at Sofia.

Isabella screamed.

I moved forward.

"Adrian!"

He looked at me.

"One last lesson, brother."

My blood turned cold.

"Put it down."

He smiled.

"Let's see how strong love makes you when you have to watch someone die."

I reached for the weapon of the nearest guard.

The room erupted.

A shot rang out.

Glass shattered.

Someone screamed.

I tackled Adrian.

We crashed into the table.

His gun slid across the floor.

I struck him.

Once.

Twice.

Twenty years of rage poured through my fists.

He tried to fight back.

But I was stronger.

And I had nothing left to lose.

I grabbed his collar.

"You took my wife!"

I hit him again.

"You stole my daughter!"

Another blow.

"You murdered our father!"

His face was bloody.

He stopped fighting.

I reached for the gun.

My fingers closed around it.

I stood over him.

For thirty years, I had solved problems this way.

A gun.

A decision.

A body.

I pointed the weapon at my brother.

He stared up at me.

For the first time, he looked afraid.

"Vincent."

I tightened my grip.

"Please."

I heard Isabella crying behind me.

I heard my mother's frightened breathing.

And then I heard Sofia.

"Dad."

I froze.

She stepped closer.

"Please don't."

I stared at Adrian.

He had destroyed everything.

He deserved punishment.

He deserved to face the consequences of every life he had ruined.

But Sofia was asking me for something harder than revenge.

She was asking me to become a different man.

"Dad," she whispered. "Don't let him take you away from us too."

My hands trembled.

I looked at my daughter.

Then my wife.

And slowly, I lowered the gun.

Adrian began laughing weakly.

"You don't have the courage."

I looked down at him.

"No."

I stepped back.

"I finally have something better."

Then the front doors burst open.

"POLICE! HANDS WHERE WE CAN SEE THEM!"

Daniel Mercer entered with armed officers.

The guards dropped their weapons.

Eleanor screamed.

Adrian tried to stand.

An officer forced him back to the floor.

I placed the gun down and raised my hands.

Daniel looked at me.

Then at Isabella.

Then Sofia.

His expression softened.

"Everybody okay?"

I nodded.

"Now we are."

But as the officers led Adrian away, he turned toward me.

And smiled.

"You think this is over?"

I stared at him.

He leaned closer.

"You still don't know who the boy is."

My blood ran cold.

"The boy?"

Adrian laughed.

"The one Clara gave birth to."

He looked toward Sofia.

Then back at me.

"He's been closer to you than you ever imagined."

And suddenly I understood that my brother had one final secret.

One final betrayal.

May you like

One last weapon waiting in the shadows.

End of Chapter 8.
