Chapter 2 - The Underground Clinic, The Miraculous Heartbeat, And The Silent Vow Of A Desperate Mother

The sterile white lights of the clandestine medical clinic hummed softly, a stark contrast to the chaos and gunfire that had turned Vetro into a slaughterhouse hours earlier. The clinic, hidden deep beneath a nondescript commercial warehouse in the industrial district, was funded entirely by the syndicate's underground medical network, but tonight, its loyalties belonged exclusively to Thomas.

Clare lay flat on the examining table, her midnight-blue dress ruined, stiffened with dried, darkened blood. Her face was as pale as marble, her lips chapped and white. The shock had settled deep into her bones, but beneath the numbness, a raw, burning agony throbbed through her lower body.

Dr. Nathan Vance, an elderly trauma surgeon whose hands were stained with decades of syndicate secrets, pulled back the ultrasound wand and stared at the glowing monitor with a look of profound astonishment.

"Mrs. Moreno," Dr. Vance whispered, his voice trembling slightly. "Miracles do happen in this hellish city. The shrapnel missed the gestational sac by a fraction of an inch. The bleeding was severe—cervical trauma from the concussive blast—but... look here."

He turned the screen toward her.

Flickering against the dark background was a tiny, rapid, rhythmic white pulse.

Swish-swish. Swish-swish.

"His heart is beating," Clare breathed, a solitary tear finally breaking free, tracking a clean line through the soot on her cheek. "My son is alive."

"He is fighting just as hard as you are," Dr. Vance said gently, adjusting the intravenous drip pumping saline and heavy antibiotics into her arm. "You suffered a placental abruption warning sign, but the baby held on. However, you cannot stay here. Vincent's men are tearing the city apart looking for Ruby and securing his territory. When he realizes you survived, he will expect you back at the estate. He will assume you belong to him, body and soul, as you always have."

Clare stared up at the ceiling, the image of Vincent hauling Ruby out of the restaurant replaying behind her eyelids like a loop of toxic film. He hadn't even checked if she was breathing. He hadn't sent medical help; he had left her to his enforcer while he fled into the rain with his twenty-two-year-old toy.

"He won't find me," Clare whispered, her voice hardening into a terrifying, crystalline resolve.

Thomas stepped out from the shadows near the doorway, his massive frame tense, his hat clutched tightly in his calloused hands. He looked down at Clare with deep, unmasked shame. "Mrs. Clare... I can hide you. I have a safe house up north, near the lake. But the Boss... when he finds out you're gone, he'll tear the state apart. He thinks you're his property."

"I am not property, Thomas," Clare said, easing herself up onto her elbows despite the sharp stitch of pain in her abdomen. "And neither is my son. Vincent made his choice tonight. He chose his mistress over his wife and his unborn child. Now, he gets to live with the consequences of that choice. But he will never lay eyes on my son."

Thomas swallowed hard, his loyalty to the syndicate code warring violently with his basic human disgust at what Vincent had done. "What do you need me to do, Mrs. Clare?"

"I need you to help me fake my death," Clare said without blinking.

Thomas's eyes widened. "Fake your death? Boss will want a body. The other syndicates—the Rossy brothers, the Vanguard family—they'll smell blood in the water. If they think Vincent's weak, or if they think his family was wiped out, a full-scale war will break out."

"Let them wage war," Clare replied coldly, swinging her legs over the side of the examining table. "Let Vincent deal with the chaos he invited into our lives. You are going to take my blood—the blood spilled on my dress tonight—and plant it in the burned-out wreckage of my personal car. You will make sure there is enough DNA evidence left behind in that chassis to satisfy the coroners and the police. By dawn, Clare Moreno will be officially dead."

May you like

Thomas stared at her, recognizing for the first time the sheer, steel-spined matriarch hiding beneath the polite, quiet exterior he had guarded for five years. He gave a slow, solemn nod. "It will be done. But where will you go?"

"Somewhere far away from Vincent's reach," Clare said, sliding off the table and pulling a dark, oversized mechanic's jacket over her shoulders. "Somewhere he would never look for a syndicate boss's wife: right back into the ordinary world he thinks he owns."
