Chapter 2 - The Anatomy of a LieAdrian froze. In the underworld, he had faced hitmen, federal indictments, and rival syndicates trying to carve up his territory, yet none of those moments compared to the terrifying stillness in his wife’s eyes.

He closed the distance between them slowly, his shoes clicking against the linoleum like a countdown.
"Isabella," he began, his voice uncharacteristically rough. "You... you're pregnant."
"Twelve weeks," she replied, her tone devoid of warmth, like glass waiting to shatter. "Carrying twins. The fertility treatments took three years, Adrian. Three years of injections, failed tests, and quiet nights where I cried myself to sleep because I thought my body was failing you."
She paused, lifting her chin to look him dead in the eye.
"And all the while, you were building a nursery somewhere else."
"It’s not what you think," Adrian said, stepping closer, though every instinct warned him he was walking into a crossfire.
"Isn't it?" Isabella let out a dry, humorless laugh. "For the last three months, while I was praying to God to give us a family, you were visiting an apartment overlooking the Hudson. You thought I was too blind, too consumed by foundation dinners and charity boards to notice that my husband stopped touching me, stopped looking at me, and started smelling like cheap perfume and expensive lies."
"Isabella, listen to me," Adrian pleaded, reaching out to touch her arm.
She flinched violently away from his hand, her eyes flashing with a sudden, blinding fury. "Don't you dare touch me. Not with the hands that held her."
Matteo appeared from the shadows near the nursing station, holding a folder containing Isabella’s intake forms. He didn't interrupt, knowing better than to step between an apex predator and his wounded mate, but his presence was a constant reminder that the hospital was crawling with eyes and ears.
"How long?" Isabella demanded, her voice dropping to a dangerous whisper. "How long has she been carrying your child?"
"Six weeks," Adrian confessed, knowing that in his world, half-truths were fatal.
Isabella closed her eyes for a brief second, breathing in deeply to steady herself. When she opened them, the tears were gone, replaced by a chilling, corporate resolve—the exact look she used to possess a decade ago when she helped him audit his first failing shipping yard.
"Six weeks," she repeated quietly. "That means while I was in this very hospital losing sleep over my high-risk pregnancy, you were playing house with a girl young enough to be our daughter."
"My empire, Isabella—"
"Save your speeches for the board meetings, Adrian!" she snapped, her voice finally breaking, the raw agony bleeding through her composure. "I didn't marry your empire. I married the man who promised me that we were a team. I gave up my career, my family, and my safety so you could build this monolith. And you repaid me by dividing your life like a corporate asset."
Before Adrian could answer, a door behind Isabella clicked open. A senior obstetrician stepped out, holding a chart.
"Mrs. Voss? Your vitals have stabilized, but given the stress and the minor concussion from your fall, we need to monitor the twins very closely. Who is your emergency contact?"
Adrian stepped forward, his jaw set. "I am."
The doctor looked from Adrian to Isabella, sensing the palpable tension in the air.

Isabella looked at Adrian one last time, a ghost of a smile touching her lips—a smile that promised total, unmitigated destruction.
"My emergency contact is my lawyer, Doctor," Isabella said clearly. "And as for my husband... I believe he has another patient waiting for him down the hall."
