Chapter 3 - The Kind Old Steward Who Fed the Pregnant Maid Was Exposed as the Traitor—But His Confession Revealed an Even Darker Secret About Nadia’s HusbandNobody moved.

Gino held the gun steadily.

Nadia stared at the man who had fed her.

Protected her.

Warned her about Bianca.

“Toby,” Lucas said quietly.

The boy clung to Nadia.

“Take him out.”

Gino shook his head.

“No one leaves.”

Lucas looked at him.

“Twenty-nine years.”

Gino’s mouth tightened.

“Thirty.”

“You served my father.”

“I cleaned up after your father.”

“You raised half this house.”

“And watched your family grow rich while men like me buried their sons.”

Lucas’s expression changed.

“Your son?”

Gino’s eyes filled.

“Matteo.”

Lucas remembered.

Matteo Ferlain.

Killed nineteen years earlier during a Falcone dock war.

Gino blamed Lucas’s father.

Enzo Rossi had found that resentment.

Fed it.

Used it.

Gino admitted helping Rossi move containers through Falcone docks.

At first, he claimed, he believed they carried stolen goods.

Then he discovered people.

“Why didn’t you stop?” Nadia asked.

His face collapsed.

“Because by then they owned me.”

“You could have told Lucas.”

“I had already helped murder Carlo.”

Toby made a small sound.

Gino looked at him.

Shame flooded his face.

“I didn’t pull the trigger.”

“That doesn’t matter,” Nadia said.

“No.”

He lowered the gun slightly.

Lucas could have attacked.

He didn’t.

“Did you order Tomas killed?”

“No.”

Nadia stepped forward.

“Who did?”

“Enzo.”

“Were you there?”

Gino closed his eyes.

“Yes.”

Nadia’s entire body went cold.

“Tell me.”

“Nadia—” Lucas began.

“No.”

She looked at Gino.

“Tell me how my husband died.”

Gino’s voice broke.

Tomas had been captured near Pier Nine.

Enzo questioned him.

Tomas refused to reveal where he had hidden the evidence.

They beat him.

He still refused.

Then Enzo ordered him thrown from the pier.

“He was alive when he hit the water.”

Nadia stopped breathing.

Lucas moved toward her.

She held up one hand.

No.

Not yet.

“What were his last words?”

Gino stared.

“He said your name.”

Nadia’s face crumpled.

“And the baby?”

“Yes.”

She turned away.

For months she had imagined Tomas alone.

Now she knew.

It hurt.

But uncertainty had been worse.

Gino’s gun lowered further.

“I’m sorry.”

Nadia looked at him.

“You fed me sandwiches.”

He cried.

“I know.”

“You touched my belly and told me my daughter deserved kindness.”

“I know.”

“You knew what happened to her father.”

“I know.”

Her voice became quiet.

“That was crueler than Bianca cutting my hair.”

Gino flinched.

Lucas moved.

He disarmed him.

Gino did not resist.

Federal agents returned.

He was arrested.

Before they took him, he looked at Toby.

“I’m sorry.”

Toby hid behind Nadia.

Gino left.

Lucas stood in the silent hall.

His empire had cracked open.

Not because an enemy attacked from outside.

Because rot had lived inside it for decades.

Nadia sat.

Her daughter kicked.

Lucas crouched beside her.

“Do you want me to call someone?”

“Who?”

He had no answer.

Her husband was dead.

Her brother was injured.

Her parents had died years earlier.

“I don’t know,” Lucas admitted.

Nadia looked at him.

“That might be the first intelligent thing you’ve said.”

He almost smiled.

Then her eyes filled again.

Lucas did not touch her.

He waited.

Finally Nadia extended her hand.

He took it.

No romance.

Not yet.

Just another human being keeping her from falling.

The investigation accelerated.

Gino cooperated.

Bianca did too.

Not from remorse.

To save herself.

She gave federal prosecutors accounts, shipping schedules and names.

Enzo Rossi disappeared.

Lucas opened his books.

Every one.

Marco nearly fainted.

“You understand what this could expose?”

“Yes.”

“Us included.”

“Yes.”

Lucas looked around his father’s office.

“I’m finished protecting dead men.”

Nadia heard.

It reminded her of herself.

Over the next three weeks, she became part of the investigation.

Not because Lucas allowed it.

Because the evidence belonged partly to her.

She reconstructed Tomas’s files.

Victor helped.

Together they discovered thirty-seven trafficking shipments.

More than one hundred victims.

Some had escaped.

Some were located.

Some remained missing.

Lucas funded recovery efforts anonymously.

Nadia found out.

“Why anonymously?”

He shrugged.

“Because it isn’t charity if I’m repairing damage my organization enabled.”

She studied him differently after that.

Not as a good man.

She was not naïve.

Lucas had done terrible things.

He admitted it.

But perhaps people were not only the worst thing they had done.

Perhaps change began when excuses ended.

One evening Nadia found him outside Toby’s room.

The boy had nightmares.

Lucas sat on the floor.

“Why don’t you go in?”

“He asked for you.”

Nadia smiled faintly.

“You’re offended?”

“Deeply.”

She sat beside him.

They listened to Toby sleep.

Lucas said, “I ordered three men killed after Carlo died.”

Nadia looked at him.

“I know.”

“They weren’t responsible.”

“You didn’t know.”

“I should have.”

“That doesn’t erase it.”

“No.”

He stared ahead.

“I used to think certainty made a man powerful.”

“What do you think now?”

“That certainty makes men dangerous.”

Nadia rested a hand on her belly.

“Tomas was certain he could protect me by lying.”

Lucas looked at her.

“Do you hate him?”

“No.”

“Are you angry?”

“Yes.”

“Both can exist.”

She smiled sadly.

“You’re becoming almost wise.”

“Pregnancy has made you cruel.”

She laughed.

It was the first real laugh since Tomas died.

Lucas stared.

Nadia noticed.

“What?”

“Nothing.”

“You’re staring.”

“I’ve never heard you laugh.”

Her smile faded slowly.

Something shifted.

She stood.

“Goodnight, Lucas.”

“Nadia.”

She stopped.

He did not say what he had almost said.

“Goodnight.”

Two days later, Victor found the final file.

Tomas had recorded it himself.

Nadia watched alone.

Her husband appeared on screen.

Alive.

Smiling nervously.

“Nadia, if you see this, then I failed to come home.”

She covered her mouth.

“I know you’ll be angry that I kept this from you.”

She laughed through tears.

“You were always smarter than me. That’s probably why I loved you.”

Nadia cried.

Tomas continued.

“I need you to know something about the debt. It isn’t real. Rossi created it to control me. If they use it against you, fight it.”

Then his expression changed.

“And Lucas Falcone…”

Nadia leaned closer.

“I don’t trust him. But I think he wants this stopped. If he helps you, judge him by what he does after he no longer needs your help.”

The video ended.

Nadia sat in silence.

That evening she showed Lucas.

He watched.

When Tomas called him untrustworthy, Lucas nodded.

“Fair.”

Nadia almost laughed.

Then an alarm sounded.

Marco entered.

“Enzo.”

Lucas stood.

“What?”

“He surfaced.”

“Where?”

“Boston.”

Marco handed him a photograph.

Enzo stood outside a private medical clinic.

Beside him was a man Nadia recognized.

Dr. Russo.

The Falcone physician.

Nadia’s blood turned cold.

“What is he doing?”

Marco answered.

“Buying medical records.”

Lucas looked at Nadia.

Her hand went to her belly.

The implication became clear.

Enzo could not reach Lucas easily.

He could reach Nadia.

Or her unborn daughter.

Lucas immediately increased security.

Nadia objected.

“I won’t become a prisoner.”

“You won’t.”

“Then stop putting men outside my bedroom.”

“One man.”

“Lucas.”

He sighed.

“You’re right.”

She blinked.

“That was quick.”

“I’m learning.”

They compromised.

One guard downstairs.

Nadia kept her phone.

She chose where she went.

Lucas informed her rather than ordered her.

It was imperfect.

But it was different.

The following morning Nadia attended a prenatal appointment.

Lucas wanted to come.

She said no.

He accepted it.

Victor accompanied her instead.

Halfway there, their driver collapsed.

Drugged.

The car swerved.

Victor grabbed the wheel.

A van blocked the road.

Men emerged.

Nadia understood immediately.

“Run.”

They escaped through an alley.

Victor fought one attacker.

Nadia reached a grocery store.

A man caught her from behind.

She screamed.

Then another body slammed into him.

Lucas.

He had followed at a distance despite promising not to.

Nadia stared.

“You followed me?”

“Yes.”

She slapped him.

Then hugged him.

“I’m furious.”

“I know.”

“Don’t ever do that again.”

“I won’t.”

“Thank you.”

“I know.”

She pushed him away.

“Stop saying that.”

Police arrested two attackers.

Both worked for Enzo.

One carried a syringe.

The contents were not lethal.

They were intended to induce premature labor.

Nadia nearly vomited when she learned.

Enzo wanted leverage.

Her child.

That night Lucas made a decision.

He called every Falcone captain.

The meeting took place in the old dining room.

“I’m dissolving the organization.”

Nobody spoke.

Marco stared.

“What?”

“Illegal operations end.”

One captain laughed.

Lucas removed a ledger.

“Federal prosecutors receive this tomorrow.”

Men stood.

Some shouted.

Lucas remained seated.

“My father built an empire. It became a cage. Rossi used it because secrecy protected him.”

“You’ll destroy us.”

“No. I’m giving you a choice. Walk away from criminal operations now and cooperate where required, or stay and face what comes.”

One man reached for his gun.

Marco drew first.

Lucas never moved.

The man backed down.

By sunrise, the Falcone criminal empire was effectively finished.

Warehouses became legitimate logistics facilities.

Illegal cash reserves were surrendered.

Lucas entered negotiations with prosecutors.

He would face consequences.

He accepted that.

Nadia found him afterward.

“You’re giving it all up.”

“Not all.”

“What remains?”

“The legal businesses.”

“And the mansion?”

“I hate the mansion.”

She smiled.

“You live here.”

“Exactly.”

Then Lucas looked at her.

“I’m not doing this for you.”

Nadia raised an eyebrow.

“That was romantic.”

“I mean—I don’t want you believing you owe me something.”

Her expression softened.

“Good.”

“I’m doing it because Tomas was right.”

“About what?”

“Judge me after I no longer need your help.”

Lucas stepped closer.

“I want to become someone your daughter could meet without you having to explain why you tolerated him.”

Nadia’s heart moved.

Dangerously.

She stepped back.

“I’m still Tomas’s wife.”

“I know.”

“He’s been gone four months.”

“I know.”

“I’m not ready.”

“I know.”

She glared.

Lucas smiled.

“Sorry.”

Then Marco entered.

“Boss.”

Lucas turned.

“We found Enzo.”

“Where?”

Marco’s face was grim.

“He’s coming here.”

Lucas frowned.

“Why?”

Marco placed a photograph on the table.

The Falcone estate.

Taken that morning.

Written across it in black ink:

MIDNIGHT.

BRING NADIA.

OR VICTOR DIES FOR REAL THIS TIME.

Nadia looked up.

Victor was supposed to be upstairs.

She ran.

His room was empty.

The window stood open.

And on his pillow lay a single lock of Nadia’s severed hair.

May you like

Bianca’s message.

The nightmare was not over.
