Chapter 2 - The Secret Ledger and the Shadows of the PastThe penthouse suite on the forty-fifth floor of Blackwood Tower was dead silent. No lights were turned on, allowing the harsh neon glow of the city skyline to paint long, jagged shadows across the minimalist white walls.

Ethan sat alone in his leather armchair, a glass of undiluted bourbon untouched on the mahogany side table. On the desk across the room lay Claire’s empty vanity mirror, her favorite bottle of perfume, and a small stack of unopened mail. Everything in the apartment remained exactly as she had left it before they drove to the hotel gala.
It felt like a mausoleum.
The heavy oak door swung open silently, revealing Michael stepping into the room with a bulky manila folder tucked beneath his arm. Behind him stood Silas, an aging intelligence broker who had served the Blackwood family since Ethan’s father ran the docks.
“Boss,” Michael said, his tone grim. “We ran the license plates of every vehicle parked near the west exit of the Grand Crescent right around the time of the alarm. According to traffic cams and private dash-cams from nearby delivery trucks, Claire never made it to the street.”
Ethan stood up so fast his chair scraped loudly against the hardwood floor. “What do you mean she never made it to the street? The firefighter said her ring was found near the west exit!”
“She reached the door, Ethan,” Silas spoke up, his gravelly voice cutting through the tension. The old man stepped forward, laying the manila folder on the desk and flipping it open to reveal several high-resolution forensic photographs. “Look at the door frame of the west exit. The security feed shows it jammed. Someone wedged an iron pipe into the latch from the outside to trap whoever went down that stairwell.”
Ethan’s breath hitched. He leaned over the desk, his eyes scanning the grainy black-and-white photos. A figure in a blue silk dress—unmistakably Claire—was pushing against the heavy steel door, realizing too late that it was barred shut. Then, right before the smoke completely blinded the camera’s lens, another figure emerged from the stairwell shadows, grabbing her from behind and forcing a chemical-soaked rag over her mouth.
“She was targeted,” Ethan whispered, the words tasting like poison.
“Not just targeted, boss,” Silas replied grimly. “Look at who owns the shell company that purchased the commercial lease for the basement space directly beneath the hotel’s west wing three weeks ago.”
Silas slid a single corporate document across the desk.
Ethan glanced down at the letterhead. His blood ran instantly cold. The company was registered under Vance Global Holdings—the primary corporate front of Viktor Vance, Ethan’s most ruthless rival in the underground shipping cartel.
For three years, Ethan and Viktor had maintained an uneasy, blood-soaked truce. They divided the ports, split the smuggling routes, and avoided direct conflict. But Viktor had always envied Ethan’s legitimacy, his unblemished social standing, and above all, his wife—who came from old money and held deep ties to the city’s political elite.
“Viktor,” Ethan snarled, his hands slamming onto the desk with a force that rattled the glass. “He didn't just target my business. He took my wife.”
“It gets worse,” Michael added, pulling a thumb drive from his pocket and plugging it into the secure terminal on the desk. “While you were at the hotel, someone broke into your private wall safe here in the penthouse. They didn't take the bearer bonds, the diamonds, or the cash.”
“What did they take?” Ethan asked, his voice dropping into a lethal register.
“The black ledger,” Michael said quietly. “The one containing the names of every corrupt federal judge, port commissioner, and police captain on our payroll. If Viktor has that ledger, he doesn't just have leverage over you—he owns the entire city.”
Ethan stared at the glowing monitor, the pieces of the puzzle violently snapping together. The hotel fire hadn't been a random electrical failure. It was a meticulously planned extraction and kidnapping operation, timed down to the exact second to exploit the chaos of the gala. And he—blinded by his own arrogance and entangled in an affair he should have ended months ago—had literally run in the opposite direction, handing his wife to his worst enemy on a silver platter.
“Get the tactical teams ready,” Ethan ordered, his eyes burning with a terrifying, cold fury. “We’re burning Vance’s operations to the ground. Tonight.”
“And Vanessa, boss?” Michael asked cautiously. “She’s still at the safehouse downtown. Should we move her?”

Ethan paused, remembering Vanessa clinging to his arm in the smoke. He realized then that Vanessa wasn't just a reckless distraction; she was a pawn in Viktor’s grand design. An affair orchestrated to weaken him, to divide his attention, and to ensure he wasn't paying close attention when the trap finally snapped shut.
“Leave her there,” Ethan said coldly. “Let her wonder if she’s safe. Because by sunrise, Viktor Vance won't have a single safe place left on this earth.”
