Chapter 3 - The Morning After, the Exposure of the Underworld Rivals, and the Safe Haven of an Eternal LoveMorning sunlight streamed through the sheer curtains of Mila’s small bedroom, painting warm amber patterns across the rumpled sheets.

Mila stirred slowly, blinking against the light. She was wrapped securely in the embrace of a warm, muscular arm. Turning her head, she found Luca lying beside her on the narrow mattress, his jacket discarded, his shirt unbuttoned at the collar, looking magnificent and utterly at peace in the pale morning glow.

He was awake, watching her with a soft, quiet intensity that made her heart flutter.

"Good morning," Luca murmured, his morning voice deep and gravelly, sending a pleasant tremor down her spine.

Mila smiled, a genuine, radiant smile that she hadn't felt in years. "Good morning. I can't believe you're still here."

"Where else would I be?" Luca asked, pressing a tender kiss to her forehead. "My place is wherever you are, Mila."

Before she could reply, a sharp, urgent vibration shattered the peaceful morning quiet.

It was Luca’s private burner phone resting on the bedside table.

Luca’s expression instantly hardened. The gentle lover vanished in a single microsecond, replaced once more by the ruthless underworld king. He reached across the mattress, snatched the phone, and flipped it open, listening intently as his second-in-command spoke on the other end.

"Boss," Nico’s voice crackled through the encrypted line, tense and clipped. "We found the leak. The rival Rossi faction intercepted wind of your midnight movement last night. They tracked your car to an apartment building in Brooklyn. They think you're vulnerable, and they're mobilizing a strike team to hit the location within the hour."

Mila’s breath hitched in her throat. Fear clawed at her chest. "Luca... what is it? Are we in danger?"

Luca ended the call with a single tap. He tossed the phone aside, sat up on the edge of the bed, and pulled his Sig Sauer 9mm from his shoulder holster, checking the magazine with cold, mechanical precision.

"Get dressed, Mila," Luca ordered, his voice dropping into absolute, unyielding authority. "We're leaving. Now."

"Where are we going?" she asked, scrambling out of bed and grabbing her clothes.

"To my estate on the Hudson," Luca stated, standing up and pulling his suit jacket back on. "No one touches you. No one gets near you. The Rossi family thinks they can play games while I'm distracted by matters of the heart? I am going to show them why my name is feared in this city."

Within twenty minutes, an armored black SUV idling outside Mila’s apartment building swept them away from Brooklyn just as two suspicious sedans rolled onto her street. The trap had been set, but Luca Romano was always three steps ahead of his enemies.

By noon, the full, terrifying might of the Romano syndicate's plot was crushed before it could even begin. Operating from his secure command center, Luca deployed his enforcers, dismantled the Rossi splinter cell, and seized their primary assets within forty-eight hours. The underworld learned a brutal, permanent lesson: Don Romano's personal life was an untouchable sanctuary.

Two months later, the terrified, invisible assistant who used to hide behind paperwork in a corporate office was gone.

Mila sat in the expansive, sun-drenched library of the Romano estate overlooking the Hudson River, wearing a stunning emerald dress, reviewing legal acquisitions with the confidence of a true queen.

The heavy double doors opened, and Luca walked in, carrying two cups of fresh coffee. He crossed the room, set the cups down on the mahogany table, and wrapped his arms around her waist from behind, resting his chin comfortably on her shoulder.

"Working hard, Mrs. Romano?" he teased softly against her ear.

Mila turned in his embrace, looping her arms around his neck, looking up into his dark, adoring eyes with a bright, triumphant smile. She had officially dropped the title of assistant months ago, becoming his equal partner in every sense of the word.

"I'm just balancing the books, Mr. Romano," she smiled, leaning in to kiss him softly. "And verifying that you belong entirely to me."

Luca chuckled, a rich, deep sound of absolute satisfaction, pulling her tight against his chest. The city outside was vast, dangerous, and chaotic—but inside their fortress of absolute control, they were safe, powerful, and eternally in love.
