Chapter 3 - THE MAFIA BOSS LEARNED HIS FIANCÉE'S FAMILY ORDERED HIS WIFE'S DEATH—BUT THE SECRET HIDDEN IN HER DEAD CHAUFFEUR'S FILE TURNED THE ENTIRE EMPIRE AGAINST HIM

Three days after Isabella's return, Dominic Moretti stood inside a private conference room staring at a photograph of Emilio Alvarez.

The chauffeur had worked for the Moretti family for eleven years.

He had two daughters.

A wife.

A small house in Queens.

And a habit of bringing peppermint candies for Isabella whenever she rode in his car.

Dominic had attended his funeral.

He had paid the family's expenses.

He had promised Emilio's widow that the men responsible would be found.

Now he realized that promise had been built on a lie.

Vincenzo stood across from him.

"Boss, we found something."

Dominic looked up.

"What?"

Vincenzo placed a folder on the table.

"Emilio filed a security complaint two days before the explosion."

Dominic frowned.

"About what?"

"Unauthorized access to the estate garage."

Dominic's jaw tightened.

"Who received the complaint?"

Vincenzo hesitated.

"Matteo."

Silence.

Dominic stared at the folder.

Then opened it.

Inside was a maintenance report.

A camera malfunction.

A disabled alarm.

An unexplained vehicle entry.

And a handwritten note from Emilio.

Security footage missing between 2:14 and 2:29 a.m.

Dominic's stomach tightened.

"Why didn't I see this?"

Vincenzo looked down.

"Matteo marked it resolved."

Dominic closed his eyes.

For years, Matteo Rinaldi had controlled the Moretti security network.

He had access to the estate.

The vehicles.

The cameras.

The schedules.

And Dominic had trusted him completely.

That trust had nearly killed Isabella.

Vincenzo continued.

"There's more."

Dominic looked up.

"Tell me."

"Emilio contacted a private investigator the day before the explosion."

Dominic went still.

"Who?"

"A woman named Claire Bennett."

Dominic frowned.

"Where is she?"

Vincenzo swallowed.

"Missing."

The room became silent.

Dominic stared.

"Since when?"

"Eight months."

Dominic looked toward the window.

Another disappearance.

Another witness.

Another person who had gotten too close to the truth.

"Find her."

Vincenzo nodded.

"Already working on it."

Meanwhile, Isabella sat in a small apartment overlooking the East River.

Dominic had arranged it through an independent property manager.

She had insisted on controlling the lease.

He had agreed.

She had also insisted on choosing her own medical care.

He had agreed to that too.

The changes were small.

But they mattered.

For years, Dominic had made decisions because he believed he knew what was best.

Now he was learning to ask.

Isabella sat beside the window with a cup of tea.

Her baby moved beneath her sweater.

She smiled faintly.

"You're going to be stubborn," she whispered.

The baby kicked.

"Just like your father."

A soft knock sounded.

"Come in."

Dominic entered carrying a paper bag.

She raised an eyebrow.

"What's that?"

He smiled nervously.

"Breakfast."

"From where?"

"The bakery you used to like."

Isabella looked down.

The bag carried the familiar blue logo.

Her heart tightened.

"You remembered."

Dominic nodded.

"Of course."

She studied him.

For a moment, she saw the man she had married.

The man who used to bring her pastries on Sunday mornings.

The man who once stayed awake all night because she had a fever.

The man who had loved her before power and grief changed everything.

Then she remembered the eight months she had spent alone.

She looked away.

Dominic noticed.

He placed the bag on the table.

"I can leave."

Isabella hesitated.

Then shook her head.

"Stay."

He sat across from her.

For a while, neither spoke.

Then Isabella asked:

"Did you find anything about Emilio?"

Dominic's expression changed.

He nodded.

"Yes."

He explained the security complaint.

The missing footage.

The private investigator.

Isabella listened silently.

When he finished, she closed her eyes.

"Emilio knew."

Dominic nodded.

"I think so."

Her voice trembled.

"He tried to protect me."

Dominic looked down.

"Yes."

Tears slid down her face.

She remembered Emilio smiling in the rearview mirror.

Remembered the peppermint candies.

Remembered how he always asked whether she was comfortable.

He had been kind.

Ordinary.

A father.

And someone had killed him because he knew too much.

Isabella wiped her face.

"We need to find Claire Bennett."

Dominic nodded.

"We will."

She looked at him.

"Not through Matteo's people."

"No."

"Not through the Russo family."

"Never."

"And not by threatening anyone who might know something."

Dominic hesitated.

Then nodded.

"Agreed."

Isabella studied him.

For the first time, she believed he might actually be listening.

***

Claire Bennett was found two days later.

She had been living under an assumed name in Vermont.

She agreed to speak with investigators after learning Isabella was alive.

Dominic and Isabella attended the interview separately.

Claire was a woman in her forties with tired eyes and a quiet voice.

She sat across from Detective Mara Ellis.

"Emilio came to me because he believed someone was using the Moretti estate garage to move unauthorized vehicles."

Ellis nodded.

"What did he find?"

Claire opened a folder.

"Security logs."

She placed several documents on the table.

"Payments to a maintenance contractor."

Dominic leaned forward.

"Which contractor?"

Claire looked at him.

"Rinaldi Security Services."

His face hardened.

Matteo.

Claire continued.

"Emilio also found evidence that a vehicle registered to the Russo family entered the estate garage two nights before the explosion."

Isabella went still.

Natalia.

Carlo Russo.

Matteo.

The connections were tightening.

Ellis looked at Claire.

"Why disappear?"

Claire swallowed.

"Because someone tried to kill me."

The room became silent.

She continued.

"I received a warning the night after Emilio died."

Isabella's eyes filled.

Claire looked at her.

"I'm sorry."

Isabella shook her head.

"You survived."

Claire nodded.

"Yes."

Then she opened another folder.

Inside was a photograph.

A security image from the estate garage.

Matteo stood beside a black sedan.

Carlo Russo stood nearby.

And between them was a woman.

Natalia Russo.

Isabella stared.

Dominic's face went pale.

Claire pointed toward the photograph.

"That was taken forty-eight hours before the explosion."

Dominic swallowed.

"Natalia was there?"

Claire nodded.

"Yes."

Isabella looked at him.

For a moment, neither spoke.

Then she whispered:

"Your fiancée."

Dominic closed his eyes.

The woman he had agreed to marry after Isabella's death had been present at the estate shortly before the explosion.

The betrayal was almost too large to understand.

But Claire wasn't finished.

She placed a final document on the table.

A financial transfer.

Two million dollars.

From a Russo holding company to an account controlled by Matteo Rinaldi.

Dated the morning of the explosion.

Dominic stared.

Then whispered:

"They paid him."

Claire nodded.

"Yes."

Isabella felt cold spread through her chest.

The explosion.

The missing footage.

The false death.

The engagement.

Everything had been part of a larger plan.

But one question remained.

Why?

Why had Carlo Russo wanted Isabella dead?

Why had Matteo betrayed Dominic?

And why had Natalia agreed to marry a man whose wife she helped remove?

Claire looked at Isabella.

"There's something else."

Isabella swallowed.

"What?"

Claire hesitated.

"Emilio believed you had discovered something without realizing it."

Isabella frowned.

"What?"

Claire opened a small envelope.

Inside was a photograph of Isabella attending a charity event nine months earlier.

She stood beside a table displaying financial reports.

Dominic looked at the image.

"That was the children's hospital fundraiser."

Isabella nodded.

"I remember."

Claire pointed toward a document in Isabella's hand.

"Do you remember this?"

Isabella studied it.

Then froze.

"The donation ledger."

Claire nodded.

"Exactly."

Isabella's heart began pounding.

At the fundraiser, she had noticed discrepancies in several donations.

Large transfers.

Repeated amounts.

Unusual corporate names.

She had mentioned them to Dominic.

He had promised to ask the accounting team.

Then, two weeks later, her car exploded.

Isabella looked at him.

"Dominic."

He stared.

"I told you about those numbers."

His face changed.

He remembered.

She continued.

"I said the donations didn't make sense."

Dominic closed his eyes.

"And I told you not to worry."

Tears filled Isabella's eyes.

She shook her head.

"They weren't donations."

Claire nodded.

"No."

"What were they?"

Claire swallowed.

"Money transfers connected to the Russo family's illegal operations."

The room became silent.

Isabella stared.

She had not been targeted because she was Dominic's wife.

She had been targeted because she had noticed financial evidence that could destroy the Russo family.

And Matteo had helped them silence her.

Dominic looked devastated.

"I should have listened."

Isabella looked away.

He continued.

"I should have protected you."

Her voice broke.

"You should have believed me."

Dominic nodded.

"Yes."

For a long moment, neither spoke.

Then Detective Ellis closed the folder.

"We have enough to seek additional warrants."

Dominic looked up.

"And Isabella?"

Ellis nodded.

"We'll arrange protective measures."

Isabella took a breath.

For eight months, she had been running.

Now she finally understood why.

And she was ready to stop.

***

That evening, Natalia Russo received a call from her father.

"Pack a bag."

She frowned.

"Why?"

"We're leaving."

Natalia looked toward the window.

"What happened?"

Carlo's voice hardened.

"Claire Bennett is alive."

Natalia froze.

"What?"

"And Isabella Moretti is cooperating with investigators."

Natalia's stomach dropped.

For a moment, she could not speak.

Then she whispered:

"Father, you said she was dead."

Carlo cursed.

"Clearly she isn't."

Natalia began shaking.

"What do we do?"

Carlo's voice became cold.

"We finish what Matteo failed to do."

Natalia stared at the phone.

For the first time, she understood that her father would sacrifice anyone to protect his empire.

Even her.

She swallowed.

"No."

Carlo went silent.

"What did you say?"

Natalia closed her eyes.

"I won't help you kill her."

A long pause.

Then Carlo laughed.

"You're already involved."

Natalia began crying.

"You promised nobody would get hurt."

Carlo's voice hardened.

"Grow up."

The call ended.

Natalia stood motionless.

Then she looked at the engagement ring on her finger.

The ring Dominic had given her as part of an agreement.

The ring she had worn while insulting his pregnant wife.

The ring that represented a future built on someone else's suffering.

She removed it.

Placed it on the table.

Then called Detective Ellis.

"I need to tell you everything."

And somewhere across the city, Matteo Rinaldi realized that the conspiracy he had helped create was beginning to collapse.

But before he disappeared, he sent one final message.

Not to Dominic.

Not to Carlo.

To Isabella.

YOU SURVIVED THE FIRST TIME.

YOU WON'T SURVIVE THE SECOND.

And beneath the message was a photograph.

Taken that morning.

Isabella standing outside her apartment.

One hand resting on her pregnant belly.

The other holding Dominic's hand.

May you like

Someone was still watching them.

And the danger was far from over.
