Chapter 3 - Ryan’s Wealthy New Bride Discovered His Lies—And the Brother Everyone Called Broken Became the Only Man Who Could Expose Him

Sophia Moretti arrived in Chicago two days later.

She insisted we meet somewhere public.

I chose a quiet restaurant near the river.

When she walked in, I understood why Ryan had wanted to marry her.

She was beautiful.

Tall.

Elegant.

With dark blonde hair and the kind of confidence that came from growing up around powerful people.

She wore a cream coat and carried a small leather handbag.

But her eyes were tired.

She looked like someone who hadn't slept.

She sat across from me.

"Emma."

"Sophia."

For a moment, neither of us spoke.

Then she said, "I'm sorry."

I stared at her.

"For what?"

"For what happened to you."

I looked away.

"You didn't arrange it."

"No."

She hesitated.

"But I knew Ryan was supposed to be engaged to someone."

My chest tightened.

I looked at her.

She continued.

"He told me it was a business arrangement that had already ended."

I laughed bitterly.

"Of course he did."

Sophia looked down.

"I believed him."

I studied her.

For a moment, I saw myself.

Not because our situations were identical.

But because Ryan had told both of us what we wanted to hear.

I leaned back.

"Why are you here?"

She opened her handbag.

Removed a folder.

And placed it on the table.

"Because I found something."

I stared at the documents.

"What?"

"Ryan has been negotiating a transfer of several Carter family holdings into a new company."

I frowned.

"So?"

She looked at me.

"The company is controlled by investors connected to my father."

I stared at her.

"That's the alliance."

"Yes."

I nodded.

"Then why are you worried?"

Sophia leaned forward.

"Because the documents include assets that Ryan may not legally control."

My stomach tightened.

"Daniel's?"

She nodded.

I stared at her.

"What assets?"

"Several warehouse properties. A transportation company. And a trust established by the Carter brothers' grandfather."

I felt cold.

"Ryan told me Daniel had no role in the business."

Sophia shook her head.

"That's not what the records show."

I stared at her.

She continued.

"Daniel owns a substantial interest in several of the assets Ryan is trying to transfer."

My heart pounded.

"Does Daniel know?"

"I don't think so."

I looked down at the folder.

Sophia continued.

"Ryan has been telling my father that Daniel is unable to manage his own affairs."

I looked up sharply.

"What?"

She nodded.

"He says Daniel's injury affected his judgment."

I felt anger rise.

"That's a lie."

"I believe you."

I stared at her.

Sophia continued.

"He wants Daniel to sign a power-of-attorney arrangement."

My stomach tightened.

"Why?"

"Because it would give Ryan broader authority over certain assets."

I looked away.

For a moment, I couldn't breathe.

Ryan had taken Daniel's position.

His reputation.

His chance at a normal life.

And now he wanted his legal authority too.

I looked at Sophia.

"Why are you telling me?"

She hesitated.

Then said quietly, "Because I don't want to marry a man who treats people this way."

I stared at her.

She continued.

"My father believes the alliance will make our families stronger."

"And you?"

She smiled sadly.

"I think Ryan is using everyone."

I nodded.

"You're right."

Sophia looked at me.

"Will you help me?"

I hesitated.

Then asked, "Help you do what?"

"Find out the truth before anyone signs anything."

I thought about Daniel.

The way he had walked away from the wedding.

The way he had refused to force me.

The way he had told me the truth about his injury.

I nodded.

"Yes."

That afternoon, I called Daniel.

He answered after three rings.

"Emma?"

"Can we meet?"

A pause.

"Is everything all right?"

"Not exactly."

He was quiet.

Then said, "Where?"

We met at my aunt's apartment.

Sophia arrived with her attorney.

Daniel came alone.

When he saw Sophia, his expression changed.

"Miss Moretti."

She nodded.

"Mr. Carter."

He looked at me.

"What's going on?"

I handed him the folder.

"Read this."

He sat.

Opened the documents.

And began reading.

For several minutes, nobody spoke.

Then his face went pale.

He looked up.

"Where did you get these?"

Sophia answered.

"From documents provided during the alliance negotiations."

Daniel stared at her.

Then looked back at the pages.

His jaw tightened.

"Ryan can't transfer these assets."

I nodded.

"That's what we thought."

Daniel looked at Sophia.

"He doesn't own them."

She nodded.

"I know."

He turned another page.

Then stopped.

His hand tightened around the paper.

"What?" I asked.

He looked at me.

"This is my grandfather's trust."

I sat beside him.

"What does it mean?"

Daniel swallowed.

"It was established for both brothers."

I frowned.

"Then Ryan has a share."

"Yes."

"But?"

Daniel looked at me.

"The trustee cannot transfer the assets without meeting specific requirements."

Sophia's attorney leaned forward.

"That's why we believe Ryan is seeking additional authority."

Daniel stared at the document.

For a moment, he looked devastated.

Then he laughed.

It was a bitter sound.

"Of course."

I touched his arm.

"Daniel."

He looked at me.

"My brother isn't satisfied with what he took."

I felt my throat tighten.

He continued.

"He wants to erase me completely."

Silence filled the room.

Then Sophia said quietly, "We can stop him."

Daniel looked at her.

"How?"

Her attorney opened another folder.

"By establishing the ownership records and challenging any unauthorized transactions."

Daniel looked down.

For a moment, he seemed uncertain.

Then I said quietly, "You don't have to let him decide your future anymore."

He looked at me.

Our eyes met.

And something changed.

Not love.

Not yet.

But trust.

The kind that grows when someone sees your pain and doesn't turn away.

Daniel straightened.

"All right."

He looked at the attorney.

"Tell me what we need to do."

Over the next several weeks, Daniel began reclaiming his life.

He met with independent counsel.

Reviewed the family trust.

Examined business records.

And challenged the proposed transfers.

For the first time in years, he stopped allowing Ryan to speak for him.

It wasn't easy.

Ryan reacted badly.

He called Daniel ungrateful.

Accused Sophia of betrayal.

And demanded that I stay out of Carter family business.

I ignored him.

Then one evening, Ryan appeared outside my accounting office.

I was locking the door when his black SUV stopped beside the curb.

He stepped out.

Expensive suit.

Perfect hair.

The same confident smile that had once made my heart race.

"Emma."

I froze.

"Ryan."

He looked at me.

"You've been busy."

I crossed my arms.

"What do you want?"

He smiled.

"To talk."

"Then talk."

He glanced toward the street.

"Not here."

I shook my head.

"Here is fine."

His smile faded.

"You've been spending time with Daniel."

I stared at him.

"Yes."

He laughed.

"Why?"

I frowned.

"What do you mean?"

"Come on, Emma."

He stepped closer.

"You're not seriously interested in my brother."

I felt anger rise.

"Why not?"

His expression changed.

"Look at him."

I stared at Ryan.

Then said quietly, "I have."

He frowned.

I continued.

"I've seen a man who tells the truth."

Ryan's jaw tightened.

"A man who respects people."

He looked away.

"A man who doesn't need to lie to make someone stay."

Ryan's expression hardened.

"You're being ridiculous."

I shook my head.

"No."

He stepped closer.

"Daniel can't give you the life I could."

I laughed.

"You mean the life you pretended to offer me?"

His face changed.

"Emma."

I looked at him.

"You don't get to use your brother's injury as an insult after he was hurt saving you."

For a moment, Ryan said nothing.

Then he smiled coldly.

"You think you know what happened that night?"

I stared at him.

"Daniel told me."

Ryan laughed.

"Of course he did."

My stomach tightened.

"What does that mean?"

He leaned closer.

"Ask him why he was really at that meeting."

I stared at him.

Then he stepped back.

"You're making a mistake."

I looked at him.

"I already made one."

He frowned.

I continued.

"Believing you."

His expression darkened.

Then he turned and walked away.

I watched his SUV disappear.

For a moment, doubt crept into my mind.

Had Daniel told me everything?

Or was Ryan trying to manipulate me again?

I called Daniel.

He answered immediately.

"Emma?"

"Ryan came to see me."

Silence.

Then Daniel said, "Are you okay?"

"Yes."

"What did he want?"

I hesitated.

Then repeated his words.

Ask him why he was really at that meeting.

Daniel went silent.

My stomach tightened.

"Daniel?"

He exhaled.

"There's something I haven't told you."

I closed my eyes.

Of course.

Another secret.

I took a breath.

"Then tell me now."

He was quiet.

Then said, "Can we meet?"

I almost refused.

But something in his voice stopped me.

He sounded tired.

Not defensive.

Not angry.

Just tired.

"All right."

We met at the small café where we'd first talked.

Daniel arrived carrying a folder.

He sat across from me.

For a moment, he stared at his hands.

Then said, "Ryan wasn't the only one who made mistakes that night."

I waited.

He continued.

"I knew he was negotiating with people our father didn't trust."

I frowned.

"Then why did you go?"

"Because I thought I could stop it."

He looked up.

"I went to confront him."

I nodded.

"And?"

"The meeting turned violent."

His voice tightened.

"I stepped between him and the gunfire."

I looked at him.

"That part is true."

He nodded.

"But afterward, I agreed to keep quiet about why he was there."

I stared at him.

"Why?"

Daniel looked down.

"Because our mother begged me."

My chest tightened.

He continued.

"She said Ryan would lose everything if the truth came out."

I felt sick.

"So you protected him."

Daniel nodded.

"Yes."

"And he used your silence against you."

He looked at me.

"Yes."

I sat back.

For a moment, I didn't know what to say.

Then I asked, "Why didn't you tell me?"

He looked at me.

"Because I was ashamed."

I stared at him.

He continued.

"I wasn't ashamed of my leg."

His voice broke.

"I was ashamed that I let my brother turn my sacrifice into a weapon against me."

My eyes filled.

I reached across the table.

Took his hand.

He looked startled.

"Daniel."

He looked at me.

"You made a mistake."

He nodded.

"But that doesn't make you a liar."

His eyes filled.

I continued.

"You told me the truth when it mattered."

He looked down at our hands.

For a moment, neither of us spoke.

Then he whispered, "Thank you."

I smiled.

"You're welcome."

And for the first time, I realized my feelings for Daniel were changing.

Not because I felt sorry for him.

Not because he had saved me from the wedding.

But because he was the first man in a long time who allowed me to see his flaws without pretending they didn't exist.

He was imperfect.

Honest.

Kind.

And stronger than anyone gave him credit for.

May you like

I looked at him.

And wondered whether the man I'd been forced to marry might become the man I would someday choose.
