Chapter 7 - She Found Her Mother Alive, But the Truth About the Fire Threatened Everything She Believed

Elena held Irene's face between trembling hands as though testing whether her daughter was real. She had survived the fire, she explained, because a neighbor pulled her from the rear stairwell. Dominic's people intercepted the ambulance transfer and kept her sedated for months. When she recovered enough to speak, they told her both children were dead.
"I believed them," Elena whispered. "Every morning I woke up and wished I hadn't."
Irene could not answer. Anger, grief, relief, and love crowded together until she could hardly breathe. She had imagined this reunion so many times, but none of her imagined versions included the shock of seeing how much her mother had suffered.
Doctors urged short visits. Irene stepped into the hallway, where Luca waited with Maya. She told him carefully. He shook his head, then entered the room. His first words were not a question. "Mom, I'm here." Elena reached for him and sobbed.
Over the following days, the family pieced together the past. Elena had worked with Aleandro's father to expose Dominic. But she also admitted that years earlier she had helped create the accounting system Dominic later exploited. At the time she believed the shell companies were designed to protect legitimate imports from extortion. Once she understood their purpose, she copied the records and tried to report the operation.
"I should have questioned it sooner," Elena said. "People died while I told myself I was only doing numbers."
Irene was quiet. She had wanted a spotless hero. Instead she had found a human being who had made a terrible mistake and then risked everything to correct it.
Aleandro listened to Elena's account through her attorney and agreed to provide company records to investigators. He suspended every executive tied to Bellwether, established an independent compliance review, and froze the disputed shipping routes. Some of his associates threatened to abandon him. Others demanded revenge against Dominic.
"Let them leave," he told Rocco. "I won't build the next decade on the same lies that poisoned the last one."
His decisions cost him millions. They also brought old enemies into the open. A rival broker offered to buy his distressed operations for almost nothing. Aleandro refused. Instead he announced plans to separate the lawful logistics company from his criminal interests and cooperate with the authorities regarding past offenses.
Irene did not mistake this for instant redemption. She asked him directly whether he expected her to love him because he had chosen to change. "No," he said. "I hope someday you'll trust me because I keep choosing it, even when you aren't watching."

They shared their first kiss outside the rehabilitation center beneath a streetlight blurred by rain. It was hesitant, gentle, and interrupted by Irene laughing at how nervous they both were.
Then Maya called. Dominic's attorney had filed a motion alleging that Elena fabricated her account for money. A second witness had surfaced, claiming Irene had been working with Dominic all along. The witness was Peter, the translator from the Obsidian Room. He had returned to Chicago with a story designed to destroy her credibility.
