Chapter 2 - The Mafia Boss Discovered the Maid Who Saved His Son Was Living Under a False Name—Then Her Missing Sister Sent a Message That Changed EverythingDominic moved me from public hospital before sunrise.

I objected.

He ignored objection for exactly twelve seconds.

Then I threatened to remove my IV myself.

He reconsidered.

“Where do you want to go?”

That surprised me.

“Not Blackthorne.”

His face tightened.

“Why?”

“Someone got through your security.”

“Not happening again.”

“You don't know that.”

He hated that I was right.

“Private medical facility?”

“No.”

“Then?”

I thought.

“Mrs. Bell.”

He blinked.

“My housekeeper?”

“She has apartment in Yonkers.”

“You want to recover from three gunshot wounds at my housekeeper's apartment?”

“Yes.”

“That is ridiculous.”

“So is private hospital guarded by twelve men.”

“Sixteen.”

I stared.

He sighed.

Mrs. Bell took me.

Dominic stationed security downstairs after asking.

Progress.

Caleb visited every afternoon.

First visit, he stood doorway.

Wouldn't enter.

“Hey.”

He looked at floor.

“Come here.”

“No.”

“Why?”

“I got you shot.”

My heart broke.

“Caleb.”

“If I stayed upstairs—”

“No.”

I forced myself upright.

“Look at me.”

He did.

“A bad man fired gun. That is his fault.”

“But—”

“No.”

Tears filled eyes.

“Sometimes adults make children believe they are responsible for things adults did.”

My voice softened.

“Don't learn that.”

He approached.

“Did it hurt?”

“Yes.”

He started crying.

I opened arm not injured.

He crawled carefully against me.

Dominic watched from doorway.

His face unreadable.

Later he said:

“You were talking about yourself.”

“What?”

“When you told Caleb children aren't responsible for what adults do.”

I looked away.

“Maybe.”

“Your father?”

“Maybe.”

He didn't push.

That was new too.

Then Sofia contacted us.

A burner phone delivered video.

My sister sat in dark room.

Alive.

Thinner.

Scarred.

But alive.

“Elena.”

Hearing name from her destroyed me.

“I know you're alive now.”

I touched screen.

“Sofia.”

Dominic stood behind me.

She continued:

“I didn't steal case for Gabriel.”

Dominic moved closer.

“I stole it from him.”

What?

“Gabriel planned Blackthorne attack. Caleb was target.”

Dominic's face became lethal.

“But not because he's your heir.”

Sofia looked directly into camera.

“Because Dominic's wife discovered Gabriel's network before she died.”

Dominic stopped breathing.

“Claire?”

Sofia continued.

“Claire Mercer worked with Dad.”

I looked at Dominic.

He looked stunned.

“Our father and Claire were building evidence against Gabriel Vale together.”

Everything connected.

“Gabriel killed Dad.”

My throat closed.

“He took me because he thought Dad told me where evidence was.”

Sofia swallowed.

“He didn't.”

Tears.

“For eight years Gabriel kept me close because he thought eventually you'd come looking, Elena.”

Guilt hit.

I hadn't.

I had stopped.

Sofia seemed to know.

“Don't blame yourself.”

Too late.

“He told me you were dead.”

I covered mouth.

“He told me house fire killed both of you.”

We had each survived believing other gone.

Gabriel had separated us with lie.

Why?

Control.

Fear.

Silence.

Then Sofia said:

“The case I took isn't Dominic's original.”

Dominic frowned.

“What?”

“Gabriel switched cases before gala.”

She held black case.

“This contains his records.”

Dominic leaned toward screen.

Sofia smiled faintly.

“I gave him your case.”

I stared.

My sister had stolen Gabriel's evidence while giving him Dominic's.

But that still meant Gabriel possessed everything about Mercer organization.

Then Sofia said:

“Not for long.”

Video ended.

A location appeared.

Abandoned rail station north of city.

Dominic immediately called men.

“No.”

He looked at me.

“What?”

“I’m coming.”

“You were shot three times.”

“She's my sister.”

“You can barely walk.”

“Then drive slowly.”

“No.”

I stared.

He stopped.

Old reflex.

Command.

His jaw worked.

“I don't think you should come.”

“Better.”

“I strongly don't think.”

“Still coming.”

He looked toward Mrs. Bell.

“Do you ever win with her?”

Mrs. Bell didn't look up from tea.

“No.”

Traitor.

We went.

Sofia wasn't there.

Only case.

And note.

HE KNOWS.

Then explosion tore through station.

Dominic covered me.

Windows shattered.

His men dragged us out.

Bomb had been warning.

Gabriel knew Sofia betrayed him.

Now he was hunting both sisters.

That night Dominic brought me to safe house.

Small farmhouse in Connecticut.

No marble.

No staff.

Just him, me, Caleb, Mrs. Bell, four trusted guards.

Caleb slept upstairs.

Dominic sat kitchen table examining Gabriel's records.

I entered slowly.

“You should be resting.”

“You should stop saying that.”

He looked at my side.

“Does it hurt?”

“Yes.”

“Medication?”

“Already.”

He poured water.

I sat.

“What did you find?”

“Claire.”

He pushed folder.

Photographs.

My father beside Dominic's wife.

They had met twelve times.

Documents showed Gabriel Vale laundering money through charities, trafficking stolen identities, bribing judges, arranging murders.

Claire discovered while auditing foundation.

My father traced accounts.

Together they built case.

Gabriel killed them.

Except Dad had hidden backup.

Where?

Unknown.

Dominic stared at Claire's photograph.

“I thought she died because of me.”

I looked.

“What?”

“She hated my criminal life.”

He spoke quietly.

“We fought night before crash.”

“About?”

“She wanted me out.”

“Were you going?”

“No.”

Regret.

“I told her Mercers don't walk away.”

His voice cracked.

“She said then Caleb would grow up believing violence was inheritance.”

I said nothing.

“Next morning she left.”

He looked at hands.

“Car exploded.”

“You blamed yourself.”

“Yes.”

“Gabriel killed her.”

“I gave him world where killing her was useful.”

I understood guilt.

Too well.

“That isn't same.”

“No.”

He looked at me.

“But it matters.”

I thought of Caleb.

“What will you do if we survive?”

He understood question.

“My organization?”

“Yes.”

Long silence.

“I don't know.”

“At least honest.”

“What would you do?”

“Not my decision.”

He almost smiled.

“You never tell me what I want.”

“Probably why you keep asking.”

Something changed between us.

Quiet.

Dangerous.

His eyes moved to my mouth.

Then stopped.

He looked away.

Good.

I wasn't ready.

Neither was he.

Next morning Sofia called.

Live.

“I'm sorry.”

“Where are you?”

“Can't tell.”

“Sofia, please.”

“I have to finish this.”

“No.”

“Elena.”

“Don't call me that like goodbye.”

Silence.

Then:

“Gabriel has Caleb's mother’s original files.”

Dominic stepped closer.

“Where?”

“Private archive beneath Vale Tower.”

Vale Tower.

Manhattan skyscraper officially owned by investment trust.

Gabriel was hiding in plain sight.

Sofia continued:

“He knows you have his case. He wants exchange.”

“For what?”

“Me.”

My blood froze.

“He wants you, Elena.”

“Why?”

“Dad gave you something night before fire.”

I remembered.

Nothing.

Then—

A necklace.

Our mother's silver locket.

Dad had fastened it around neck.

“Never take this off.”

I had worn it eight years.

My hand flew to chest.

Dominic noticed.

I opened locket.

Mother's photograph.

Nothing else.

Sofia whispered:

“Break back plate.”

Dominic handed knife.

I pried.

Tiny strip of paper.

Numbers.

A key.

Not physical.

Encryption key.

Dad had hidden final access code with me.

Gabriel needed it.

That's why he wanted me alive.

That's why gunman aimed Caleb?

No.

Caleb was leverage against Dominic.

I was leverage against evidence.

We were all pieces.

I was tired of being piece.

“We make exchange.”

Dominic shook head.

“No.”

I looked.

He corrected himself.

“I don't want you to.”

“Neither do I.”

“Then?”

“We make him believe he wins.”

For first time, Dominic and I planned together.

Not boss and maid.

Not protector and victim.

Partners.

Federal agents were contacted through Claire's former attorney.

Dominic hated it.

I insisted.

“You can't shoot your way through everything.”

“I've had moderate success.”

“Dominic.”

“Fine.”

Sofia arranged exchange.

Vale Tower.

Midnight.

I wore wire.

Dominic's men stayed outside federal perimeter.

I entered alone.

Gabriel waited penthouse.

Eight years older.

Still smiling.

“Elena.”

I hated name in his mouth.

“Where's Sofia?”

“Safe.”

“Show me.”

He gestured.

Door opened.

Sofia entered.

My knees nearly failed.

Real.

Alive.

We stared.

Then ran.

We held each other.

Eight years disappeared.

“You're alive.”

“So are you.”

Gabriel clapped.

“Beautiful.”

I turned.

“Give us Claire's files.”

“Key first.”

I removed locket.

Then:

“Why kill my father?”

“He became moral.”

“That's reason?”

“In my world, yes.”

“You burned house.”

“Yes.”

“Took Sofia.”

“Yes.”

“Told each of us other was dead.”

“Yes.”

He smiled.

“Grief makes people obedient.”

I wanted to kill him.

Instead I remembered wire.

“Claire?”

“She was unfortunate.”

Dominic, listening somewhere below, would hear.

“She discovered too much.”

“You killed her.”

“I authorized.”

There.

Confession.

“Caleb?”

Gabriel smiled.

“Dominic's weakness.”

My stomach turned.

“You ordered shooting.”

“I ordered boy taken.”

I froze.

“The gunman misunderstood?”

“No.”

His smile faded.

“I changed mind.”

Sofia went pale.

“He decided dead heir would destroy Dominic faster.”

Gabriel stepped closer.

“Then you jumped.”

He laughed softly.

“Little Elena Rossi. Still trying to save everyone.”

I gripped locket.

“No.”

I looked him in eyes.

“Just the people worth saving.”

I dropped it.

That was signal.

Windows exploded inward.

Federal tactical teams breached.

Gunfire.

Gabriel grabbed Sofia.

Dominic appeared from stairwell despite plan.

Of course.

Gabriel pointed gun at me.

Dominic stopped.

“Let them go.”

Gabriel smiled.

“The great Dominic Mercer.”

“Let them go.”

“Your wife begged less.”

Dominic's face changed.

I saw murder.

Real murder.

Then Caleb's voice echoed in my memory.

Being hurt doesn't make you weak.

Dominic lowered gun.

Gabriel laughed.

“You've gone soft.”

“No.”

Dominic looked at me.

“I learned what I can't afford to lose.”

Gabriel fired.

Sofia shoved him.

Shot hit wall.

Agents tackled him.

Dominic reached me.

“Are you hurt?”

“No.”

Sofia screamed.

We turned.

Gabriel lay pinned.

Alive.

Dominic stared at man who killed wife.

His hand tightened around weapon.

I touched wrist.

Not stopping.

Just reminding.

He looked at me.

Then slowly holstered gun.

“Let him live.”

Agents dragged Gabriel away.

Dominic watched.

“Why?”

I asked.

He looked toward Sofia.

Then me.

“Because Caleb is watching who I become.”

He was.

At security monitor downstairs.

And for first time, Dominic Mercer chose future over revenge.
