Chapter 3 - The Underworld Syndicate War, the Traitor’s Reckoning, and the Underworld Boss’s Absolute Surrender to His Shy SecretaryBy Friday afternoon, the cold-blooded corporate logistics office of Costa Logistics had transformed into an armed fortress.

Word had filtered through the underground network that a splinter faction from the rival Moretti syndicate had tried to breach Vincent’s estate earlier in the week—and that the target had mistakenly been the master bedroom.

Khloe sat at her reception desk outside Vincent’s executive office, typing up freight manifests while completely oblivious to the fact that three armed enforcers in plain suits were stationed near the elevator lobby. She thought her life was going back to normal. She had received a strange, anonymous direct deposit into her bank account that morning covering three months of back-pay and a comprehensive dental plan, but she figured Mr. Costa was simply paying hush money to ensure she didn't sue him for trespassing trauma.

Then the elevator doors dinged.

A sleek, heavily built man in a bespoke gray suit stepped out, flanked by two associates. It was Dominic Moretti—regional underboss for the rival family, a man notorious for brutal hostile takeovers both in the stock market and on the docks.

Khloe stood up immediately, her heart hammering against her ribs. “S-sir, appointments require prior clearance—!”

Dominic didn't even look at her. He raised a hand, casually shoving Khloe aside as he strode directly toward Vincent’s heavy oak office doors, pushing them open without knocking.

“Costa!” Dominic barked with a smug grin, stepping into the private office. “I hear your security is slipping. Letting strangers wander into your bedroom—!”

Bang!

The sound of a heavy sidearm slamming flat against a mahogany desk echoed across the executive suite.

Vincent Costa stood behind his desk, his face carved entirely from granite. He hadn't drawn his weapon to shoot; he had slammed it down to signal an execution.

Within two seconds, the three plain-clothes enforcers swarmed through the doorway behind Dominic, locking the heavy oak doors from the inside and barring all exits.

Dominic’s smug smile faltered. His eyes darted toward the enforcers, then back to Vincent’s cold, dead eyes. “What is the meaning of this? I’m here to discuss port concessions—!”

“You’re here because your hit squad botched a wet-work operation on my property three nights ago,” Vincent stated, his voice dropping into a low, terrifying growl that rattled the windowpanes. “You thought you could eliminate my successor by targeting the master suite while my night-shift secretary happened to be sleeping there.”

Dominic paled rapidly. “I don't know what you’re talking about—!”

“You authorized a hit on a civilian inside my home,” Vincent interrupted, stepping slowly around the desk. His massive frame towered over Dominic, radiating an apex-predator fury that made the room feel suffocating. “In my world, declaring war on my logistics is business. Declaring war on my home is an execution order.”

Outside in the outer office, Khloe pressed her ear against the heavy oak door, her breathing trapped in her throat as muffled shouts and the unmistakable sound of breaking furniture echoed through the wood.

She didn't know what was happening, but she knew one thing for certain: Vincent Costa was tearing the building apart to protect her.

By 6:00 p.m., the office was quiet once more.

Dominic Moretti had been escorted out through the freight loading dock via a black van with tinted windows—his syndicate aspirations permanently dismantled, his North Shore shipping contracts summarily transferred to Costa Logistics.

The executive suite was empty save for the boss himself.

Vincent stood by the large glass window of his office, watching the Denver sunset paint the sky in violent shades of orange and purple.

A soft, hesitant knock rapped against his open door.

Vincent turned his head.

Khloe stood on the threshold. She wore her cheap gray skirt and white blouse, holding a fresh manila folder against her chest, her hands trembling slightly.

“Mr. Costa?” she asked quietly.

“Enter, Khloe,” Vincent said, his voice softening into a register he never used with anyone else.

She walked across the plush carpet, stopping a respectful distance from his desk. She placed the folder down. “The... the port concessions from the Moretti acquisition. Paulie asked me to bring them in for your signature.”

Vincent looked at the folder, then raised his dark eyes to study her face. The dark circles were gone; thanks to a full night’s sleep and actual medical care, she looked healthier, brighter, and entirely too resilient to be an ordinary secretary.

“You shouldn't be working late on a Friday,” Vincent noted quietly, walking around the desk to stop just two feet away from her.

Khloe swallowed hard, looking up into his striking, intense face. “After what happened this week... I figured staying close to the fortress was safer than going home.”

A rare, breathtaking smile curved Vincent’s lips—a look of absolute, unconditional devotion meant for her alone.

“The fortress is entirely secure, Khloe,” Vincent murmured, stepping closer, his warm fingers gently catching her chin, tilting her face upward. “And the person inside it is never, ever going to be treated like furniture again.”

Before Khloe could process the staggering weight of his words, Vincent pulled her gently against his solid chest, capturing her lips in a deep, fierce, undeniable kiss that sealed their fate across every boundary of class, power, and fear.

The tired secretary had broken the ultimate rule by sleeping in the boss’s bed, but as Vincent held her against his heart in the quiet executive suite, the underworld king knew he had finally found the only treasure worth protecting for the rest of his life.
