Chapter 2

“You can’t do this to me! Do you know who my husband was? Do you know how many judges I play golf with?” Cordelia shrieked, her aristocratic veneer completely disintegrating into the raw panic of a cornered criminal.

“Your husband passed away years ago, Mrs. Callaway, and your golf buddies can't help you in federal court,” Agent Marcus Vance replied with absolute, unbothered calm. He turned his attention to Callum, who stood frozen near the grand staircase, staring at his hands as if he couldn't comprehend how his invincible life had evaporated in less than three minutes.

“Callum Callaway, turn around and place your hands behind your back,” Agent Vance ordered, stepping forward with a pair of heavy tactical cuffs.

Callum snapped out of his trance, his eyes darting frantically around the foyer as if looking for a secret exit. When he realized there was no escape, his arrogant fury returned in a blinding flash. He glared at me with pure, murderous hatred. “You set me up!” he snarled, taking a step toward me before two federal agents slammed him facedown onto the marble floor, pressing a heavy boot against his spine. “You ungrateful bitch! I gave you a home! I gave you my name!”

“You gave me a prison sentence disguised as a marriage, Callum,” I replied coldly, looking down at him from my upright position. “And now you’re going to experience what it feels like to have no way out.”

Agent Vance signaled for the transport officers to haul Callum and Cordelia out to the waiting federal vans parked outside on the manicured lawn. As the heavy oak doors closed behind them, muffling Cordelia’s frantic, desperate wails, the grand foyer fell into a profound, breathless silence. Only a few agents remained behind to finish cataloging evidence.

Agent Vance walked over to me, holding out a clean, warm woolen blanket and a bottle of water. He offered a respectful, sympathetic nod. “Are you alright, Mrs. Callaway? The medic team is waiting outside in the mobile unit. We should get that arm checked out.”

“I’ll live, Agent Vance,” I said, accepting the water with a steady hand. “Thank you for moving so fast. If you had arrived five minutes later, I’m not sure what lengths they would have gone to force those transfer signatures.”

“Your father trained us well, Deline,” Vance smiled faintly. “Director Vance was a legend at the Bureau. When your distress signal hit our secure routing server with real-time audio corroborating a physical assault and active extortion, we didn't need a search warrant—exigent circumstances allowed us immediate entry. Your father’s dead-man’s switch protocol is a masterpiece.”

A bittersweet wave of emotion washed over me. My father had passed away two years ago, believing he had retired from a world of shadows, but his legacy had just saved my life.

Over the next seventy-two hours, the legal dismantling of the Callaway dynasty unfolded with the speed and fury of an industrial hurricane. Because the federal indictment was backed by months of forensic accounting data and the live audio recording of the assault, neither Callum nor Cordelia could post bail. Federal judges deemed them extreme flight risks and a physical danger to a federal witness.

News trucks converged on the Callaway estate within hours of the raid. Financial news networks ran breaking banner headlines: CALLAWAY LOGISTICS HEIR AND MOTHER ARRESTED IN MULTI-MILLION DOLLAR FEDERAL EMBEZZLEMENT SCANDAL. The Callaway board of directors held an emergency Sunday morning session, voting unanimously to strip Callum of his executive titles, freeze his personal stock options, and cooperate fully with the Department of Justice to save the publicly traded corporation from being dragged down by the family’s criminal rot.

Meanwhile, I spent my time in a secure, confidential location arranged by the U.S. Marshals Service, reviewing the corporate restructuring documents. Under the original pre-nuptial agreement—which Callum had foolishly drafted to protect his own assets from what he assumed was my "gold-digging" nature—any proven instance of domestic violence, physical assault, or felony financial conspiracy committed by a Callaway against me resulted in an immediate, penalty-free forfeiture of all shared marital assets and a complete transfer of equity control to the aggrieved spouse.

In simple terms: Callum had legally signed away his entire multi-million-dollar fortune to me the moment he let his mother order him to hit me.

On Tuesday afternoon, sitting across from my corporate attorney in a sunlit conference room overlooking the Chicago skyline, I signed the final transfer papers. Callaway Logistics was no longer a corrupt family dynasty built on intimidation and fraud; it was now entirely under my ownership, and I was fully prepared to purge every last vestige of the Callaway name from its leadership.

The nightmare was nearly over. All that remained was the final reckoning in a federal courtroom where Callum and Cordelia would finally discover that money and last names couldn't buy you out of gravity.
