Chapter 3 - The Underworld Civil War, the Eradication of Sal Marco, and the Underworld King and Queen’s Sanctuary at Trattoria RossiThe private estate of the Russo syndicate sat behind towering stone walls and wrought-iron gates in an exclusive enclave north of the city, hidden beneath a canopy of ancient oaks and weeping willows.

Inside the sprawling, gothic-style manor, the atmosphere was a stark contrast to the gritty, neon-lit alleyways of downtown. The rooms were filled with dark mahogany furniture, Persian rugs, and centuries-old oil paintings, wrapped in an absolute, suffocating silence.

Nara sat on the edge of a magnificent, velvet-draped four-poster bed in a guest suite that looked larger than her entire apartment. She wore a soft, oversized cashmere sweater provided by a discreet housekeeper, holding a steaming mug of chamomile tea between her hands.

She was safe here. That much was obvious. The estate was a fortress.

Yet, as she listened to the muffled, urgent murmurs of guards communicating over secure earpieces down the hallway, she knew the safety came with a terrifying price tag. She had been pulled into the beating heart of a civil war she never asked to join, anchored to a man who controlled the city’s pulse with a single word.

The heavy oak door of the suite clicked open.

Dominic walked in. He had discarded his suit jacket, wearing a crisp white dress shirt with the sleeves rolled to his forearms, revealing strong, corded muscles and faint scars along his wrists. He looked tired—not the exhausted frazzle of a overworked manager, but the bone-deep, terrifying fatigue of a sovereign holding an empire together by sheer force of will.

He stopped a few feet from the bed, his dark eyes assessing her with intense, unblinking focus.

“Are your burns stinging?” Dominic asked quietly, nodding toward her right hand.

“They’re better,” Nara said, her voice steady, though her heart hammered against her ribs. “The cream worked. Where are Sal’s men?”

“Sal’s men are currently recalculating their career choices in a basement three miles from here,” Dominic replied smoothly, a dark, dangerous ghost of a smile touching his lips. “And Sal himself is learning that loyalty to the family is not a negotiable contract.”

Nara stared at him. “You’re going to kill him?”

“Sal attempted to undermine my leadership by threatening a civilian inside my territory,” Dominic stated, his voice dropping into a register of absolute, freezing death. “In my world, that is treason. Treason has a standardized penalty.”

The brutal reality of who and what Dominic Russo was crashed over Nara with full force. He wasn't just a wealthy businessman or an aggressive boss; he was a cold-blooded executioner who ruled by absolute power and lethal retribution.

Yet, when she looked at him, she didn't see the monster the tabloids whispered about. She saw the man who had ordered burn cream for her blistered fingers, who had given her an escape hatch in front of her terrified manager, and who had brought her into his own home to shield her from the crossfire of his enemies.

“And what about me?” Nara whispered, her voice trembling slightly. “Once Sal is gone... what happens to the waitress who spilled soup on you?”

Dominic took a slow, deliberate step forward, closing the distance between them until he stood right beside the edge of the massive bed. He reached out, his warm, calloused fingers gently touching her chin, tilting her face upward so she had no choice but to meet his piercing gaze.

“You are not a waitress anymore, Nara,” Dominic murmured, his voice dropping into a husky, hypnotic register that made the air in the room feel suddenly very thin. “You are the only person in New York who has ever looked me in the eye and told me my soup was too hot. Do you really think I am ever going to let you walk away from that?”

Before Nara could form a reply, Dominic leaned down and captured her lips in a deep, fierce, undeniable kiss that completely obliterated every remaining barrier between their two vastly different worlds.

Three weeks later, the neon sign of Trattoria Rossi shone brightly against the evening sky, but the interior had undergone a stunning, permanent transformation.

The restaurant was packed to capacity, buzzing with life, laughter, and the rich scents of roasting garlic and fine wine.

At the center table—the very same dark corner booth where a minestrone catastrophe had once changed the course of history—sat Dominic Russo, looking remarkably at ease in a tailored charcoal suit.

Standing beside him, wearing an elegant emerald-green silk dress that commanded the room with effortless grace, was Nara. She wasn't carrying a heavy tray or dodging frantic managers anymore; she was co-owner, managing partner, and the undisputed queen of the establishment.

The heavy front doors chimed as a new wave of patrons entered, and Nara caught Dominic’s dark, devoted gaze across the room. He raised his crystal glass of scotch in a silent, possessive toast.

Nara smiled back, a brilliant, triumphant expression that warmed the entire dining room, knowing she had finally found her true home right in the center of the storm.
